Part 1. Walking a Little Taller: the Freedom House (Slave) Museum Opens Next Tuesday, Alexandria, VA
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 04:57 AM by CorpGovActivist
My partner and I have been invited to the opening of the http://www.freedomhousemuseum.org/">Freedom House Museum here in Alexandria, Virginia, next Tuesday.

Tuesday is also Potomac Primary Day, when DC, MD, and VA hold their respective contests.

According to our invitation, the museum site "was once the headquarters for the Franklin and Armfield Company, the largest and most successful domestic slave-trading firm in America."

It is also the headquarters of the Northern Virginia Urban League.

A good friend of mine - a good friend I've known for a long time, in fact - informs me that a few "special guests of honor" are expected.

It is, after all, Election Day. In the Commonwealth. Where the Capital. Of the Confederacy. Was.

But is no more.

For anyone in the area, this might be a worthwhile calendar mark. My understanding is that Congressman Moran will be on hand, too.

- Dave

P.S. For more on the http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=franklin+armfield">Franklin and Armfield Company.

2. If you make it that far, we're about 15 minutes away, and know good places to eat.
Please look us up.

:hi:

3. Part 2. Walking a Little Taller: the Guards outside the SEC
A little over a week ago, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=4251208&mesg_id=4251208">I dropped by the SEC for an important research errand.

Outside the SEC - and most key Federal buildings now, in fact - there was a gaggle of guards.

Every one was African-American, and as I approached, I could hear that they were talking in hushed, excited whispers about Obama.

When I got closer, they clammed up, waiting for me to pass. Instead, I stopped, and asked if I could join in; now, when I go back, we know each other by face and by name, and exchange the latest.

Over and over as I'm out and about, I'm hearing both men and women, of every conceivable ethnicity and extraction (Metro DC is nothing, if not a melting pot), say: "I will be so proud to vote for him!"

As the Potomac Primary zooms ever-closer, I'm seeing a lot more people walking a little taller around here.
