GET REAL PEOPLE, BECAUSE SOME ONE WINS A RED STATE IN A DEM PRIMARY
DOES NOT MEAN THEY WILL CARRY THAT STATE IN A GENERAL.

YOU CANNOT MAKE THOSE COMPARISONS AT THIS TIME.

1. Finally someone who speaks common sense
Obama could no more carry Alabama in the general election than Clinton could Oklahoma. Anyone on any side here doing these sorts of projections is not a person to take seriously.

2. Guess what. Republicans ALSO won primaries in those red states.
Some people are sooo lacking on knowledge of how the political process works. I've corrected the very same error several times tonight, to no avail.

7. Dems showing 2:!, 3:1 advantage in Red States
same as the Blue States. Yep, there's something happening here. Don't write off the 50 state strategy. Obamo went to Idaho. It paid on in big time.

13. Well Hillary has a Florida Ohio strategy for November - which cost us the last two elections!
What's wrong with winning red states - Dems will carry California, MA, New York, New Jersey easily come November whether Hillary or Obama is the nominee. Its about expanding the base where Obama is stronger - Dems can't carry on praying they win Ohio and Florida as the only route to the White House!

18. Obama will not carry California ...
It's painfully obvious he does not have hispanic support and without that ... sorry, but he just isn't going to get CA. McCain will chew him up and spit him out here.

Same for Arizona.

And FLorida will go red because of same-sex-marriage being on the ballot.

I'd love to see Obama (or Hillary) take a southern state, but it's not gonna happen.

It will all come down to Ohio again. :scared:

10. I know
Dems tend to have more minority voters in their primaries and you can't assume what happens in a Dem primary will happen in the general. But it is still great to see and surprised the heck out of our corporate media.

that someone would have been painted as unelectable in the general.

14. How could you say such a thing?
Why, if a southern state's largely black democrats vote for a black candidate, it stands to reason that population as a whole will automatically vote for him in the general election as well!

:sarcasm:

And racism no longer exists among white voters in the south.

15. Specific state circumstances matter, but I wonder if it is better for us to nominate
someone who wins "blue" states or "red" states in the primary.

A "blue" state winner will win those states in the GE, flip a couple of purple states (given the GOP's dire straights), and win a 52-48 election. A "red" state winner would probably (but not as certainly) still win the "blue" states (by definition) and probably have a better shot at "red" states.

Seems that a "blue state" winner is a relatively low risk-low reward for us (a surer bet to win, but not to win big), while a "red" state winner is a relatively higher risk-higher reward candidate (not as sure a winner, but possibly a big winner).

While the RW base will rally around McCain to some degree for the GE (that's what bases do, including our own), he could probably use Hillary to energize parts of the base that doesn't really like him that much, given the RW's Clinton hatred. Of course, they will go after any Democrat, including Obama (or Edwards, Dodd, Richardson, Biden or any other), the the Clintons seem to hold a special place in the RW's heart (if you want to call it that). ;)

23. Those Red States are throw away wins. GOP ers who vote
for you in the primary are not going to vote for you in the
general Likewise with Independents. Many of these people
are having fun trying to screw up Democratic Primary.

Yes, a few Republicans might vote for you. But very few.
In Californian Republican leaning Independents could
not vote in GOP race. They fully intend to vote GOP
in GE.

25. Many Southerners still vote in the Dem primary
because that is where so many local races are still decided- county judge, sheriff, county commissioner and the like. You have to look further than simply the raw numbers of how many voted in Dem vs repub primary, because you have to look and see if the local races might have influenced that. Apparently some people on here don't understand this quirk of the South and think this translates to support in November.

38. so the republicans all voted for Obama?
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 10:19 PM by frogcycle
but they don't vote until Feb 9, do they?

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/state/#KS

STATE INFORMATION: 6 electoral votes
1,646,599 total registered voters -- 26% Democratic, 45% Republican,
27% Independent/unaffiliated
DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL:
Closed caucuses
41 total delegates*
32 tied to February 5 caucuses, 9 superdelegates REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL:
Caucuses
February 9

DEMOCRATIC CAUCUSES February 05, 2008

Obama 27,172

Clinton 9,462

So your "very red state" has 1.6 million registered voters, 45% of them Republicans (which would be why it is a red state). Of 428,116 registered Democrats, 8% showed up to caucus, and went overwhelmingly for Obama. No question about it, 74% to 26% is impressive. He got out the vote. Those 27,172 are no doubt passionate supporters. My congratulations to you and them. But don't try to make it out that the "red state" of Kansas went for Obama. It is clear that there are at least 27,172 passionate Obama supporters, who turned out in record numbers to support him, out of those 1,646,599 registered voters. Let's see, that's
1.6%.

37. 4 to 1 here for Obama statewide
We had over 8,200 people at the local caucus last night. Only 5,000 statewide voted in the last primary here. While it would be very premature to predict a GE victory here, Democrats from all camps are energized as I have never seen in the 37 years I have lived here.
