McCain running mate?
If he gets the nomination I was wondering who McCain might choose as a running mate, which of course could add or subtract from his ticket and therefore affect his chances in the general election.

My gut says it could be a McCain/Lieberman ticket we will face in November. If McCain is thinking of one term only, Joe the traitor could step right up in 2012 from the VP slot.

Any predictions who our guy/gal will face this fall?

1. Condalair Rice. "Hey look! We got us a gal and a black all rolled up into one!"
Not Lieberman, not ever.

20. LOL
Condi's got a date with Saks, Bendel's, etc. for a gigantic shoe-buying frenzy come November. She's too busy.

33. I wouldn't count Condi out.
Or Alan Keyes, if McCain wants to pull in the fundie vote and thinks he can pull in black conservatives and independents.

by some rabid right wingers so that McCain can prove he's a real republican

4. Huckabee.
Santorum's negative factor is WAY too high. And his temper is worse than McInsane's.
Huckabee puts a happy, smiling, friendly face on theocratic fascism.

6. I don't think Huck helps him in ways an Eastern or Northern RW loony would
McCain is gonna spend the first month after his convention shooting for the center. It won't pan out and he'll run hard right starting in October. But while under the delusion that he can take the middle ground with his pro-prolonged-occupation stance, he'll nominate another moderate wingnut from a Blue or Purple state.

Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 09:28 AM by hatrack
. . . plus McCain gets saddled with a nutbag running mate who scares or disgusts the Country Club Pubs into either (a) staying home or (b) holding their noses and voting Democratic.

but I don't think McCain and he like each other much at all

I think it will be Huckabee because it throws a bone to the bible thumpers and to the sout. The dems won't contest much there anyway seeing as the Repubs ARE the party of the south and that's about it now.

8. Charlie Crist or Huckabee
Crist would help him pick up Florida. Crist is relatively well-liked down here, although I'm not sure if diehard neocons could support him.

He's single. Republicans will always move to insulate themselves from the same kind of rumors they themselve spread.

16. Phil Gramm
Someone who can articulate the RW economic argument in way that McCain can't, is from the South, but not as offensive to independents and people outside the South as Huckabee is. I think he is McCain's main economic adviser.

23. I just think he will pick a Senate buddy rather than Huck
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 03:44 PM by Strawman
And I think he will pick an older guy like him whose judgement he trusts. Plus Gramm is a money whore who can raise cash for the general election in ways that Huck can't.

I think McCain is the Dole campaign all over again. He's going to get trounced. I'm glad it's going to be him and not Romney. I know the pundits say McCain is more electable than Romney, but I don't believe it. Maybe he was electable 8 years ago, but now he is stale.

He didn't endorse McCain without expecting a BIG repayment. Count on that.

32. Oh sure, I can see AG or something like that
But when it comes down to pure pragmatic politics, McCain is going to go for somebody who will pick up as many votes as possible, and shore up his weak points in regard to the conservative electorate. That person is Huckabee, and if that's the case, and McCain wins, here's hoping that McCain stays alive.
