Actually, I think they were taken by surprise with McCain's surge and didn't make much of an effort before the Florida primary to push a viable candidate. Most of them liked Fred, and look where that went. Now they're trying to play catch up.

They may have over-estimated their own self-importance. After all, most of them hate John McCain but he keeps on beating Huckabee and Romney..
