Exit Polling in CA and NY: Gay Voters
From The Advocate, via Queerty:

The exit polling found that among the 4% of California voters who identified as GLB, 63% voted for Clinton, 29% for Obama, and 1% for Edwards. In New York, 7% of voters self-identified as GLB and 59% voted for Clinton, 36% for Obama, and 3% for Edwards.

New York and California were the only states in which this question was asked. The results show that the GLB electorate didn’t move much from where they were last fall in Hunter College’s national polling of the community, when likely GLB voters preferred Clinton by 63%, Obama’s by 22% and Edwards at 7%.

20. get a clue.
The McClurkin episode, unfortunate as it was, pales in comparison to the divisiveness that Senator Clinton has allowed her campaign to devolve into. Her comparison between the roles played by Dr. King and President Lyndon Johnson in advancing civil rights can be chalked up to inartfulness. The comments coming from her surrogates are far more disturbing, forming a pattern that sadly can no longer be ignored.

2. I think it's absurd to make any conclusions based on this data.
Two states, both which went by double digits for clinton, are naturally going to have a high percentage of gays voting for her. One of them is her home state, which in my view invalidates it completely. I'm sure Obama would win GLBT voters in Illinois by similar margins.

25. If these didn't reflect the national survey, I'd be more likely to agree.
The national survey demographics don't appear to give a geographic breakdown.

My inclination is to expect gays to be more like other gays, than like their hetero geographic peers, broadly speaking.

But that's just a hunch.

10. Could be. But if you look at the Hunter College national polling
from November - http://www1.cuny.edu/forum/?p=1881 - the results show Clinton getting 63% of the gay vote.

It's certainly possible that those numbers have moved since then.

It's certainly possible that gays vote more like their states generally do.

It's also possible that the gay vote may not reflect the state.

8. The real telling part of that is the %ages didn't change. They
essentially already had their minds made up.

Most people that support Clinton already have. She doesn't poll much different than she has for years. She's kind of failed to rally any support beyond her "core". Kerry had the nomination sewn up by now and he started way behind where Clinton was four years ago as she used to beat him in straw polls.

I have to ask, why can't Hillary get people to convert for her?

41. Wrong again.
I'm weary of the whole "All gays are voting for Hillary anyway!" thing. That's a bullshit response designed to diminish the gay voting bloc -- which (surprise!) doesn't mean shit unless we become the easy scapegoat when the Dems lose an election.

I was converted to Hillary. Obama -- who scared the fuck out of me, as a gay person -- is to thank for driving me into the HRC camp.

Fuck that whole "They essentially already had their minds made up" mantra. It is not true for all of us, and I'm sick to death of Obama supporters writing off gay HRC supporters with it.

Find another route to attacking us, will you?

Obama drove me to HRC. A year ago I wouldn't have considered voting for HRC but now I'm gladly supporting her and have cast my vote for her in the primary. Obama's incessant pandering to evangelicals and homophobes, lack of any defined goals (Hoping for Change isn't going to get you anywhere) and downright scary supporters has turned me into a staunch "Queer for Hillary".

Which is of course why whites and gays abandoned the black civil rights

54. As a member of the GLBT community, I don't consider it patronizing at all
Just a couple of facts. Clinton came into office promising to give equal status to GLBT people in the military. Instead, he gave us Don't Ask, Don't Tell. And he gave us DOMA, which is a thorn in the side of the equal-marriage movement across the country. Bill Clinton advised Senator Kerry to endorse some of the state bans on same-sex marriage back in 2004. Thank goodness he had the sense to refuse that advice. And Bill would be Prez Hillary's closest advisor. Is that what you really want?

They are understood in the context of what happened, and when it happened.

If you really want me to answer your specific questions, I will be happy to do so. But in the end I suspect what we've got is a difference of opinion about what those things mean.

But rest assured - they are not forgotten. As a GLBT person, I don't know how you could suggest otherwise.

58. They should have
Sadly the fact that they even asked GLB voters (in a mere two states) is considered progress. :-(

60. Not at all
I don't see why we can't accept that we have two fantastic candidates, and either one of them would be miles ahead of any rethug. We all have our preferences, but the policy differences between them are not that big. I prefer Obama, you prefer Clinton. What's so horrible about that? The members of each group of supporters are enthusiastic, but trashing the other side with accusations like this will accomplish nothing positive.

61. Embrace 'em then cure 'em VS. I love you just the way you are and "I want to be your president"
The gay community comprises > 7% of the voting public. But the 7% does not reflect their immediate influence -- brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, children, cousins and friends who may not be gay but sympathize strongly with the GLBT community because of their personal connection.

It is beyond profoundly insulting for Obama to hire and parade around the country an ex-gay minister who claims to be able to cure gays with his gay-be-gone program. Obama's message: Don't hate the gays -- embrace them, for they are sick -- but we have the cure!.
I ask each of you to imagine -- during the heat of the black civil rights movement one of the politicians offering to de-colorize your skin. How would it feel? It hurts, hurts deeply....

I don't want to be de-gayed.
I want my president to accept me just the way I am.
I want my president to fight for me and fight for my rights.
I want my dignity, I don't want to be de-gayed.

Going beyond cures...

A Message to LGBT Americans: “I Want to be Your President”

February 4, 2008 - 12:52pm — editor
On the eve of Super Tuesday, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton offers up a message of support for the LGBT community. Read the New York Senator's guest post below.

By Senator Hillary Clinton

As I have traveled around the country these past twelve months, what I sensed in my heart has been confirmed – America is embracing its LGBT sons and daughters with an acceptance and understanding as never before. On the campaign trail, a father of a gay son will ask about ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. A woman will ask why she can be discriminated against just because of who she is. Sometimes they wait furtively for the crowd to thin and then whisper their confidences in a soft voice and sometimes they stand up proudly at town meetings and want me to share my views on how I will help lead the change to assure that this country fulfills its promise to everyone.

Let me tell you what I have been telling voters across America. I am fully committed to the fair and equal treatment of LGBT Americans. For seven long years, the Bush Administration has tried to divide us - only seeing people who matter to them. It's been a government of the few, by the few, and for the few. And no community has been more invisible to this administration than the LGBT community.

I will change that. The best evidence of what I will do as President is what I have already done.
...

My father was a conservative Republican, who held very traditional views for much of his life. Yet in his last years, it was a gay couple who lived next door who provided much of the compassion and comfort he and my mother needed as he grew ill. And it was that same neighbor who held his hand as he died. If my father can move, America can move.

To each and every LGBT American, I say this. You have done so much to help this country understand your lives by simply being open and honest about who you are and living your lives with dignity. Thank you for your courage. It is time that we recognize your hard work. I know that this country is ready for changes in the law that reflect the evolution in our hearts.

America deserves a President who appeals to the best in each of us, not the worst; a President who values and respects all Americans and treats all Americans equally no matter who they are or who they love. I want to be that President. I want to be your President.
