Hillary Loaned Her Campaign $5 Million, Spokesperson Confirms
Hillary Loaned Her Campaign $5 Million, Spokesperson Confirms
By Greg Sargent - February 6, 2008, 3:30PM

This morning, Mark Halperin floated an intriguing question: Are the Clintons financing Hillary's campaign with their own money?

Now the Clinton campaign has finally answered: Yes, they are. Hillary spokesperson Howard Wolfson sends over the following:

Late last month Senator Clinton loaned her campaign $5 million. The loan illustrates Sen. Clinton’s commitment to this effort and to ensuring that our campaign has the resources it needs to compete and win across this nation. We have had one of our best fundraising efforts ever on the web stoday and our Super Tuesday victories will only help in bringing more support for her candidacy.
The revelation suggests another emerging dynamic in the race: Now that the campaigns are committed to grinding it out for weeks and weeks, perhaps all the way until the convention. the Hillary camp faces the prospect of being dramatically outspent by the Obama campaign, which has enjoyed huge fundraising success.

More in a bit.

1. Hillary's campaign can grind to a halt if they keep going like this.
It explains why they didn't compete in like 10 states.

Her campaign is NOT in financial trouble - just ask all her supporters - they swore that people who posted otherwise were making suppositions. Hmmmmm wonder what else is wrong with the campaign????

On edit: WAIT - HOLD ON so of the $13 million raised in January - $5 million of it was Hillary Clinton cash? She only raised $8 million from donors? Obama outraised her 4-1? Ouch x( That's gotta hurt!

30. And her campaign FAILED to mention that $5 million of her $13 million
raised in January was from Hillary personally:

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0208/Clintons_January_135_million.html

Clinton's January: $13.5 million

That's from campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe on MSNBC today:

Russert: Last month. You guys raised 10 million.

McAuliffe: We won the fourth quarter and the third quarter. We actually raised more in '07 than Barack Obama did.

Russert: How's your money holding up?

McAuliffe: It's good. I mean, he -- you said 10. We actually about did about 13 1/2, which I was very proud of. We had more cash on hand at the end of '07. He had a great January. Hats off. I've been raising money for a long time. All the compliments in the world to the Obama campaign. They raised a lot of money on the internet. I heard over 25 million on the internet. Congratulations to them. No one should be worried about Hillary Clinton, though. We will always have our resources to get our message out.

<snip>

+++++++++++

Where in there does Terry tell Russert that $5 million of it was Hillary Clinton's personal funds? AND he's proud of that? Well, we all know that she will have the resources to get her message out !

51. And to get her through Feb. 5th looking financially sound -
But what does she do for an encore? transfer of $10 million and loan of $5 million....next sell off some housewarming gifts?

And for anyone (not you) who is comparing this to what Kerry did in 2003-4, remember, Kerry was upfront about the loan & he used it to WIN Iowa and gain momentum. I don't think Clinton's $15 million dollar investmentment paid off.

11. Yup, Hillary's strategy has backfired in a major way, and now she's having to scramble
She thought that with a front loaded primary season, her coat of inevitability, and the most cash raised going into the primary season, she could blast all of her competition out of the water by today, and coast to victory. Trouble is that she wasn't inevitable and Obama stood up to her onrush attack. Now that he's got a well spring of cash flowing, and a lead in the pledged delegates, Hillary is going to have to scramble. She essentially shot her wad, now she's low on cash and scrambling for a new primary plan since inevitable didn't work out.

Right now it looks like all she's wanting to do is stay close until the convention where she can undemocratically get the nomination by arm twisting super delegates. So much for the will of the people.

“I don’t think anybody is clamoring for more debates,” he said. “We’ve had 18 debates so far. I think we’ve had 10 more than we’ve had in the last Democratic contest.”

He said he would agree to at least one debate, but noted, “It’s very important for me to spend time with voters.”

18. Bill Clinton 2007: "self-financing violates the spirit of campaign finance reform"
He railed against the Supreme Court for blocking some attempts to limit the influence of money in politics.

“We are very frustrated because we have a Supreme Court that seems determined to say that the wealthier have more right to free speech than the rest of us.”

And he implied that he would not use his own funds to support his wife's candidacy.

“For example, they say you couldn’t stop me from spending all the money I’ve saved over the last five years on Hillary’s campaign if I wanted to, even though it would clearly violate the spirit of campaign finance reform,” he said.

73. I agree she could have been making a whole lot more and so could he
But she was vice president of University of Chicago Hospitals at about $350,000. In this day and age that's not an unusually large amount, but combined with his salaries as a legislator, lawyer and teacher, they weren't hurting before he made the haul on his books, is what I mean. They had to do the same things, pay the same expenses, etc., as a family does on a quarter of that income. I'm glad they were able to do that and do good works at the same time. God knows, they could be super rich by now if money was their purpose. I admire them both tremendously for the choices they made.

26. Obama was funneled 300,000.00 from rezko! Oh wait it was Rezko's ..Auchi’s
Today’s arrest of slumlord Tony Rezko could be very bad news for Barack Obama’s presidential ambitions. Rezko was arrested because he lied to the Feds–he claimed in November 2006 he had no assets and was virtually broke, but in April 2007 he received $3.5 million from a company owned by an Iraqi billionaire who also happens to be a convicted felon . The man’s name? Nadhmi Auchi.

So what does this have to do with Obama? Well, buried in a footnote in the motion for an arrest warrant, we learn that Auchi was denied a visa to the United States because of his conviction in France on fraud charges. Auchi’s buddy, Rezko sent a request to the U.S. Department of State in November 2005 for a visa waiver. And Rezko asked unidentified “Illinois government officials” to ask for clearance as well. How much you want to bet one of those officials was Barack Hussein Obama?

So here’s the test. Was Obama smart enough, hell, let’s say brilliant, to just say no?

We may not find out until Rezko’s trial starts on 25 February. Imagine this nightmare scenario. Obama nails down the Democratic nomination for President on Super Tuesday. But then comes the Rezko trial and we learn Obama was doing favors to get an Iraqi felon a visa to the United States. You know, he is just helping out one of his major fund raisers. Will his story line about a new day in Washington still sound plausible? Will folks still believe he’s serious about not being beholden to “special interests?”

I don’t begrudge Obama trying to help out a buddy. I just wish he’d cut the holier than thou act. He’s playing the Washington game like many others. In this case, however, he may get dirtied up. And in that case he could take the Democrats with him.
