Super Tuesday: The Most Interesting Number of All
Posted by Karen Tumulty | Comments (27) | Permalink | Trackbacks (0) | Email This
I'm up in NYC, where we are struggling to get dead-tree TIME out the door. As is so often the case, our own data wizard Jackson Dykman has come up with the most fascinating bit of data within all these mountains of numbers coming out of Super Tuesday:

TOTAL VOTES CAST

Clinton: 50.2% (7,347,971)

Obama: 49.8% (7,294,851)

Really, could it have been any closer?

UPDATE: Swampland commenters ask; Jackson answers:

Since you asked
Total votes cast in 21 GOP contests yesterday among McCain, Romney and Huckabee:

McCain: 43.1% (3,611,459)
Romney: 35.4% (2,961,834)
Huckabee: 21.5% (1,796,729)

For grand totals, vastly more Democrats than Republicans voted yesterday;

Democratic votes for Clinton and Obama: 14,622,822 (63.6%)
Republican votes for McCain, Romney and Huckabee: 8,370,022 (36.4%)

Put another way, the Clinton/Obama race drew 76% more voters than the McCain/Romney/Huckabee race.
UPDATE2: Jackson's on a roll:

Here are the numbers just for the 19 states where both parties had elections yesterday
Obama/Clinton voters: 14,460,149
McCain/Romney/Huckabee voters: 8,367,694

Or, 73% more Democratic voters than Republican voters.

A lot of this is huge Democratic numbers in New York and California.

2. I believe that figure doesn't include caucus states

and Obama swept those. In any case, this is good news for dems, regardless of who you support!

6. No, never. And to think earlier in the season I screamed at Eli
for throwing the ball at receiver's feet or backs or opponents and wanted him Fired, Fired, Fired.

Glad they didn't listen to me!

I loved the game - especially that play where Eli escaped from a crowd ! I screamed so much I couldn't even talk on Monday.

Did you go to the ticker-tape parade?

7. No - had to work but
I did TIVO it to enjoy this weekend. It seemed to me that something happened to Eli in the NE game at the end of the season. His performance was so stellar in the playoffs (and kudos to our fantastic defense). He came into his own. I remember everyone always getting on Phil Simms back all the time also. Right up until he won the SB. NYers are very tough critics. I thought they were going to fire Coughlin before the season. Now, it's a 4 year contract on top of the one year his has left on his current one. Maybe next year will be Eli vs Payton. Archie'll have a heart attack.

12. Something funny about him. We were in NY eating at Gallaghers
and they were broadcasting a sports radio show in the bar. Anyway Michael was there and after the show, he was sitting in the bar with three women hanging all over him. Then, it was like a week later we heard all the news about how his wife was mad, leaving him, taking his money, etc.

That's my claim to fame! haha. I did get his autograph. woo-hoo!

13. That happens with all NY athletes
The women go bonkers. I've heard interviews with wives that laugh about it because they are secure in their marriages. Looks like Mrs. Strahan caught him in the act. Not smart for a high profile person. I once flew with both Mark Messier and Wayne Gretsky (and the rest of the Edmonton Oilers) on a flight from Toronto to NY. I kidded them that they should kick the Islanders ass and go easy on the Rangers. Who knew a few short years later Mr. Messier would be our hero.

9. I really hate to be a cynic but I wonder if the reason for the low R turnout
could be some of them are trying to spoil our primary by voting Democratic? Just curious.
