I Suggest to a Limit As To How Many Threads One Single Poster Can Start in a Single Day.
I don't know about you, but I'm about to stop coming to the Primary Discussion Forum because one single individual seems to think it is OK to post the first thing that pops in his mind, and the problem is that at any given time up to one quarter of the threads on the first page alone are his threads devoted to his most recent thoughts in an apparent never ending stream-of-consciousness of thread postings.

I find this disruptive and annoying to the healthy and yes, sometimes contentious but always engaging, dialog that I come to the site for. This sort of free association of perpetual thread creation by one individual is frankly hurting the site in my opinion.

I would ask Skinner and all to humbly consider a limitation to how many threads one can initiate within a 24 hour period. I've kept quiet about this until I can no longer bear it.

One of the most annoying results of allowing anyone to create thread after thread is that it pushes many of the more meaningful threads right off the front page. In fact, I think that many times multiple thread creation is intended to do just this.

In the Krishna faith, I am told that a deity can breathe universes out of his nostrils. In many ways, I feel like there is one poster (nameless) here who is breathing threads out of their nostrils and it hurts the site.

That's my two cents. I can already here the false straw man arguments against this a "censorship", but that's not what I asking for. I am asking for a reasonable limitation to how many threads any individual can start in a 24 hour period.

I think that it would be helpful.

1. I think natural evolution should take care of this.
If the individual is truly that abusive, sooner or later he or she will be tombstoned.

19. I would love that there were healthy limits set.
I sense that if it was going to happen that Skinner would of implemented the plan by now.

52. ProSense, Magic Rat, cali are not the subject of my concern, joshcryer.
I may not always agree with them, but they don't clog up the entire first page with threads.

The issue also deals with new visitors to the DU who are not members and who can not hit the "ignore" button.

Essentially, one individual is currently hurting the site. Intentional or not, it is the result.

People who post constantly just to monopolize the forum really need to be limited so that we all have a chance for our posts to be seen without them flying down the page because of a spammer.

27. agreed.
I suggested last week a system similar to the Kos diary rules limited only to GD/P.

Having to consolidate to one or two topics per day would force topics with more content instead of the one or two liners that have been flooding this forum. And most of the one or two liner topics have been nothing more than childish taunts.

The ignore function just isn't workable with this mess. Tons of posters here are low-count drive by types and as soon as you swat down one with ignore another pops up. Even if there is an occasional topic of interest to browse, it's quickly kicked to page 4 or 5 with the dumb hit and run crap.

If anyone has anything to say about the above topics they have to post it there.

What bugs me is when posters post stuff repeating what others have already posted. They might be damn trolls clogging up our board.

Many of our visitors who may be thinking of joining up with us can not utilize the IGNORE feature and they see the forum filled with the rantings of one single individual.

I submit to all here that it hurts the DU and we can lose many new members and even friendly lurkers.

Ponder this.

Just a few people tend to post large numbers of news articles daily, sometimes in spurts of one every two or three minutes. I don't necessarily want to 'ignore' these folks, because they also chime in with intelligent responses on these and other threads. But shouldn't the main function of a "discussion board" be the discussion of issues, not to serve as a news ticker?

was a news junkie who kept everyone up-to-date on the latest news of interest--and we loved him for it. We would not want to prevent someone like Kephra from accomplishing such useful things.

I say alert on those threads or posts that are offensive and use the ignore buttone on the ones you don't want to see. I simply don't open threads by posters who have annoyed me too often in the past. I don't even bother with the ignore button. I just keep the list in my head.

With all respect, there can be no comparing Kephra whose contributions here pulled us together, whose threads were always thoughtful and respectful, with this individual who I think drives visitors to the site away.

And now that you mentioned his name, I have a great hole in my heart. God, I miss him.

67. Oh, absolutely. No comparison at all. But the frequency of threads issue is
what I was addressing, not the quality of threads. Kephra posted a lot, and I read every thread of his that I found. On the other hand, I just don't even open the threads by certain posters who are basically just spamming certain forums.

I miss him, too, and Nostamj and Andy. We have lost some real treasures here.

I think the ignore feature is a good one, but I personally do not use it. I've always thought that there is a least some grain of wisdom or information to be gained from all opinions - whether they are similar to by own views or not.

However, the aforementioned poster does test my limits. This may be a viable solution, at least through the primary season.

That says a lot already, doesn't it? Thanks for your comments. I don't use the ignore feature either, never have. Because I don't, I am able to see what visitors (not members) see when they come here. Many times it is one thread after the next by a single person.
