Serious question: where has Hillary's money gone?
I thought she had raised about as much as Obama, and I was under the impression that Obama was spending more than she was (maybe that impression was wrong). I doubt she is broke, but how did she get to the point where she needed to loan her campaign 5 million?

4. that's a good question
Her ad buys have hardly been wall-to-wall.

I'm guessing she has a much higher overhead due to consultants, pollsters, and various hangers-on.

You know what's kind of sad? That she funded that little Hallmark "Hour that was actually a half hour longer" special out of her own pocket.

11. millions, like 7-10, on polling folks locally.
due to Penn-man-shit.
probably as much on focus group groping.
also due to Penn.

hucksterbee has spent less totally, than hillary has spent on polling.

20. That would be stereotypical for the Clintons
to blow so much money on polling. I guess she wouldn't know what else to say or how to act without constant polling. Is it any surprise that people are suspicious when she has an overly emotional moment only once at a critical time? Or that she suddenly has a huge clown smile at all times?

On the dem side consultants or strategists get 10-20% of all ad buys. The Cons pay theirs a flat fee.

18. Not Everyone Is Working For Free
“Even if his candidate fails to secure the Democratic nomination, Mark Penn, the chief strategist for Sen. Hillary Clinton, has profited quite handsomely.

Through the course of the primary, Penn's consulting firm, Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates, has been paid more than $4.3 million by the Clinton campaign, according to a review of campaign finance filings.

That total, compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, includes receipts for tasks ranging from polling and consulting to mail expenses and even photography. It does not include the $1.5 million the Clinton campaign is in debt to the firm.

Sen. Barack Obama's chief adviser, David Axelrod, has not done too poorly either. His firm, AKP media (for which Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe also serves) was paid more than $1 million by the Obama campaign, primarily for media activities.”…

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/06/mark-penns-firm-paid-4_n_85192.html#comments

Plus this:

“It is not uncommon for candidates to spend their cash on the firms and companies associated with their advisers. And the elongated primary, combined with the historic fundraising totals, have pushed campaign expenditures increasingly higher. Still, the totals taken in by Penn and, to a lesser extent, Axelrod represent significant hauls for a year-plus work.”

36. The Top Aides Are - the ones she needs the most
Update: Time's Mark Halperin reports a rumor that I've heard circulating among campaign sources for weeks: Top Clinton aides are working without pay to save the campaign money. Hard times call for hard measures. While this is generally a bad sign for a campaign's bank account, it's not always a bad thing. It can separate loyalists from fair-weather operatives and turn bloated, consultant-run operations into lean, focused machines. Just ask John McCain, who pulled a similar maneuver earlier this cycle.

41. Not To Argue The Point (Too Much)
But Penn is the topmost and has veto power over everyone else and while if Mandy Grunewald and Ickes plus others are giving her a freebie for the month, in fairness to HC, she and BC have paid them all beaucoup bucks over the years

45. I Think Only She Can Answer That
The point of the thread is why is she out of money, and I believe the answer is in large part because Dem candidates have for decades now been paying premium prices for consultants and strategists. Our side would be far better off if flat fees were paid, for one thing. It would also not leave a candidate who has a shot at the nom from being financially hamstrung. And frankly, one has to wonder why these premium people haven't been more effective with the internet. I suspect that they went for the big donors never dreaming they would be matched or outmatched by any of the other candidates.

28. I'm really tired of American politics being all about $$$
I wish the Congress had the political will to enact legislation that required all networks and broadcasters to provide free time to the major candidates to present their message. And this year-long campaign to choose a nominee and then a President is far too long, with too many separate primaries, too many debates, too much hoopla and talking heads on our TV screens. Other democratic countries don't have anything that even vaguely resembles this celebration of campaign financing and money.
