23. those 'choice' votes...
Lawmakers and other Illinois officials said the present vote was devised to enable lawmakers to recuse themselves from voting on bills that present personal conflicts. It can also be used in the routine day-to-day wrangling in the legislature.
In at least 45 instances, Mr. Obama voted with large numbers of fellow Democrats as part of the tactical skirmishing with Republicans over the budget.

Seven other times, he voted that way as part of a broad strategy devised by abortion rights advocates to counter anti-abortion bills.
Pam Sutherland, president of Illinois Planned Parenthood Council, said Mr. Obama was one of the senators with a strong stand for abortion rights whom the organization approached about using the strategy.
Ms. Sutherland said the Republicans were trying to force Democrats from conservative districts to register politically controversial no votes.

Ms. Sutherland said Mr. Obama had initially resisted the strategy because he wanted to vote against the anti-abortion measures.

“He said, ‘I’m opposed to this,’” she recalled.

But the organization argued that a present vote would be difficult for Republicans to use in campaign literature against Democrats from moderate and conservative districts who favored abortion rights.

Lisa Madigan, the Illinois attorney general who was in the Illinois Senate with Mr. Obama from 1998 through 2002, said she and Mr. Obama voted present on the anti-abortion bills.

“It’s just plain wrong to imply that voting present reflected a lack of leadership,” Ms. Madigan said. “In fact, it was the exact opposite.”

Obama Surrogate: He Will Be "First Woman President"
By Greg Sargent - February 6, 2008, 3:57PM
From the "With Friends Like These" file...

Obama supporter and Virginia first lady Anne Holton, the wife of Governor Timothy Kaine, is putting together a group called "Women for Obama." Why form such a group on behalf of a candidate who's running against the first female with a real shot at becoming president?

Well, as another member of the group, Megan Beyer, wife of former lieutenant governor Donald S. Beyer, put it to The Washington Post...

Beyer said Obama's "warmth" and his early opposition to the war in Iraq are big selling points with female voters. "In many ways, he really will be the first woman president," she said.
Hmmm. At this rate, if Obama wins the Presidency, he'll be the first woman president and the second black one.

12. I don't get your point.
But if it's that supporters from ALL sides can say stupid things in the name of their candidate - I entirely agree. Absolutely, MADem.

18. My point was simply that TONI MORRISON coined the term for Clinton.
She called him the FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT. http://ontology.buffalo.edu/smith/clinton/morrison.html

And Tim Kaine's wife is the one calling Obama THE FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT.

That's my ONLY point. Everyone 'blames' Clinton for 'being' the 'First Black President' but he's not the one that coined the term.

Can't blame Obama either because Tim's wife is an idiot.

14. Yeah, that's why I deleted my comment......
the print was small and I misread and thought the governor's wife said it. It's bad enough the former Lt. Governor's wife said it.

10. If Bubba can be declared "first black president" then why not?
maybe he should be the first Metrosexual president. The first INTERNATIONAL president. The first Miles-Davis-Listening president.

The first Admitted-to-smoking-the-reefer President

It was a jab at Bill Clinton being called the first black president.

21. I heard it again on local talk radio (Richmond) this morning
this is on the megastation that carries Beck Rush Hannity and Savage. The local morning guy was actually reading the "Bill will become president if Hillary wins, Hillary will be appointed VP and run again" email that is going around. This bozo then went on to point out that you can vote in either primary on Tuesday (while making fun of people thinking the vote was two days ago) HINT HINT *wink* so in the myriad of falsehoods and disinformation and plausably deniable marching orders/excuses he brings up that Obama could be the "first woman president" addin gin that "some people say" that Obama is a bit effimenate. I don't know if he mentioned the "Obama muslim" email but I would be surprised if he didn't.

Well there you have it folks Virginia in the playing field. I expect that between WRVA and the local horrific rag the Times-Dispatch much of these talking points will be made over the next 6 days.

Oh and I saw TWO Obama ads (in a diner talking about jobs going overseas and offshore tax cheats) during the Duke -UNC basketball game. AND one on American Idol which I understand are not only really expensive but hard to get at any price (marketing goldmine).
Really really good buys for the younger market.

24. I doubt that Gloria will call him the first woman president. ......
He clearly does not have any record of fighting for women's rights. The Clinton's do have a record of fighting for African Americans. Does being born in Hawaii, really mean, he ancestry is from slavery, that which many true African Americans endured with slavery? I think not. Besides, many whites marched, established the underground rail road, and died fighting against this injustice to slavery. Is there any attitude of gratitude for those whites that championed the plight of slaves and africans Americans of that day. Dr. King was grateful to the whites who stood with his cause. Obama, not so much. Obama's ancestors were not brought here under slavery. He was born an American he is not an African american. He is just an American, born in the USA.Lets not confuse African's with Black Americans.
