Thousands line up for Obama appearance in Omaha, NE
Thousands line up for Obama appearance
Associated Press - February 7, 2008 5:15 PM ET

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Thousands of Nebraskans lined up for a chance to see Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama in Omaha.

Jonathan Noland of Omaha took part of the day off work to get in line for the Thursday afternoon Omaha rally. The 25-year-old is an Obama supporter who says the Illinois senator's visit shows he cares about every part of the country and every vote.

Julie Wolf of Lincoln, who's registered as a Republican, says she'll register as a Democrat to vote for Obama in Nebraska's caucuses on Saturday.

Wolf says Nebraskans "are just for good people."

Oscar Harriot, a Lincoln resident who works in the state ombudsman's office, said the atmosphere reminded him of another candidate's visit to the Civic Auditorium - Robert F. Kennedy, when he ran for president in the late 1960s.

"The exciting part is the last time I saw this much political activity was when RFK came to Nebraska," said Harriott, who caught a Kennedy appearance in Lincoln at the time. "That's the last time I saw this number of young people who decided to be part of the political process."

7.  9,000 + overflow crowd!
5:25 p.m.

Although some space remained on the floor of the Civic, by 5 p.m. the arena reached the capacity fire marshals deemed safe for the rally - near 9,000 people. Obama had not yet arrived by 5:30 p.m.

A sizable crowd remained outside the arena when officials closed the doors. The overflow audience was moved to the Mancuso Center, an exhibition space attached to the arena.

Dan Ekfelt made it inside by rushing to the Civic after substitute teaching at Central High. The 55-year-old certified art teacher and longtime football and baseball coach at Creighton Prep said he's never before been this excited about politics. Obama, he said, "just mesmerizes me."

"He's such a dynamic power. This guy, he's got a glow to him," said Ekfelt. "He's new, he's fresh. He's not part of the old guard."
