Obama agrees to two more debates with Clinton
Thu Feb 7, 2008 8:39pm EST

OMAHA, Nebraska (Reuters) - Democratic U.S. presidential hopeful Barack Obama agreed on Thursday to hold two more debates with rival Hillary Clinton before March 4, officials from his campaign said.

One debate will take place on February 26 in Cleveland, Ohio. The other will take place in Texas on a date to be determined.

Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont hold nominating contests on March 4.

Clinton had pushed to hold five debates in that period, but Obama rejected that, saying he needed to spend more time at campaign events with voters.

2. I am confused -
I thought the Obama campaign said that Hillary's request for more debates is a "second tier congressional candidate" tactic.

15. This is about Hillary seeking free air time for the two states she has
a chance in. Obama is smart to delay this until then. He could go in with many more delegates he wins in DC Maryland, Virginia etc. He may do well in Ohio and Texas but not win those two. I would have only gone with one, but he may think he can keep Hillary's delegates down and raise his own in two big states.

16. Just shows Obama's compassion to be charitable to the second tier candidate.

"If I could turn back time." should be the Clintons' theme song, rather than "Don't stop, thinking about tomorrow."

We can do better than to have a third term of their DLC inspired co-presidency.

4. The campaign trail is more important than going over the same thing in debates
2 is more than enough, 1 would have been fine

12. Let's be honest there is nothing new going to be gained by any more debates
We all know the arguments

Fine, two more, but I can tell you what each candidate's position will be at the final two debates

No one will make any major mistakes

18. Great compromise.
Debates are Hillary's strength (one area where I think Bill has helped her tremendously).

But Obama has gotten progessively better.

he's trailing.

21. Two debates between now and March 4th is acceptble to me
I would prefer three but I appreciate that the public will now get three chances in total to compare our finalist candidates side by side in one on one debates. People are finally tuned in and paying close attention now. This is an important decision. We get to watch 3 debates between the Democratic and Republican candidates for President also. I am pleased that Obama agreed to this, and I appreciate it.

23. Good. The last two debates have benefited Barack greatly. South Carolina shored
up one of his supposed negatives--that he wasn't tough enough and wouldn't fight back. It also reinforced Hillary's negatives that she enjoys getting down in the mud.

Los Angeles one-on-one presented a clear picture-it's one or the other. It also allowed Barack to appear to be the equal to the quasi-incumbent. Anything close to a tie definitely helps Barack. Everyone knows Hillary and knows she's knowledgeable on the issues. A debate gives voters another chance to get comfortable with Barack and see that he also is knowledgeable on the issues.

Only advantage for Hillary is that more debates gives Barack a better chance to do something that shows him totally unfit for the presidency, like look at his watch or sigh. The Clintons, of course, will try to find some bullshit little moment to elevate into the gaffe that ends his candidacy.
