What if we could "Ignore" based on key words in a title like "cult", "IWR", "Rezco", "liar", etc?

Once you had seen more than enough posts about a particular subject, boom you put that key word on ignore.

You might run the risk of missing a new twist on an old topic, but it would make DU life a lot less stressful by not seeing the same "meme du jour" a thousand times a day. ;)

I've had no one on "ignore" for years. I have to admit, though, that I have been worn down. I have two on "ignore" now. A week ago I felt guilty about it, took them off "ignore", and then put them back on within a day.

I'm just not as strong as you. :)

6. I don't get this ignore thing

If I wanted to ignore things why would I come to a board like this?
I am hear to learn what others are thinking and feeling, and if I start reading a post and find it a boor or somehow offensive I hit the back button and continue on to some other poster.
That is al I have to do to ignore dumb crap.
Besides sometimes you have to read and try to understand stupid to know that it is.

That tends to be implemented via "tagging" and not just brute string searches. Brute string searches would be especially taxing on the system as any user may have a different list of words ignored which would have to be manually searched in each post/thread. More likely we would be allowed to "tag" a thread as being about something, both authors and readers, typically allowing some maximum number of tags per thread. And then the user selects tags to ignore, highlight, search, or whatever. For searching and highlighting, its not really a big deal, and you can find that feature in a lot of boards and blogs. But for ignore I think it would end up hiding more than you want, since tagging is arbitrary and eventually something will be improperly tagged.
