I don't think Obama supporters are cultish or part of a cult.
Edited on Fri Feb-08-08 07:15 AM by MassDemm
I think it is more a cult of personality.

A fad.

More like members of a movement that attend revival meetings.

But a true cult, no. Nor do I think all members on this board support him because of this, but out there in society, the less politically inclined do support him not for his policies, but because he is the next best thing, the fad, the thing that makes them feel good for reasons people can't articulate.

Watch this to see what I mean:

1. You're not fooling anybody.
Sucks for you that Obama has captured the interest of the American voting public just when it was supposed to be "her turn." So you're relegated to the sorry position of dismissing it all as a "cult of personality." Whatever gets you through the day.

2. I'm not trying to fool anyone. I'm trying to have an intelligent conversation.
And no, nothing sucks for me. I am very please with Hillary and her campaign.

4. And I think there is no earthly reason to support Hillary
Edited on Fri Feb-08-08 07:22 AM by sandnsea
And that the people out there do it because she's a woman, she's known, and to some, she's a Diva.

She hasn't got one accomplishment to her name. She's failed at her greatest concern, health care. She's supported a war and failed to learn from it and continues with the same mindset towards Iran.

She surrounds herself with some of the most vile campaigners around, and now we know she believes you're supposed to beat your opponents brains out. She hasn't said one true thing in the entire campaign.

Her sleazy associates never end.

And you guys say Obama supporters are cultish??

5. I think people know Hillary Clinton and they can articulate the reasons why, not in
personality traits, but for what she will do for this country.

Rather than being just a uniter, she has plans people know about. That is a big difference between her supporters and Baracks.

8. They have the lies she has told them
Like she's going to bring all the troops home in 60 days. And she's going to give health care to every American and not leave 15 million out, like Obama. That's what they know, a pack of lies. And when you lay the lies right in front of their face, they just push you out of the way and yell la la la la la even louder. So if you want to talk about cultish, THAT is cultish.

11. How do we know Obama isn't lying?
John Edwards non-endorsement before Super Tuesday was very telling to me. Neither candidate is perfect.

6. Could they have named Hillary Clinton's accomplishments? Al Gore's?
A group picked by Fox News is ridiculed for supporting Obama but not being able to name his accomplishments.

Do you think that if they had asked average people in 2000 to name the accomplishments of George W. or Al Gore that the people would have given a long list?

Assuming you consider Bill Clinton a good president, were his accomplishments before taking office the reason to support him?

7. As I do research on both ... away from DU....
It feels more like an anti-Hillary movement. For the life of me, can't find a thing to justify voting for Obama.

I'm leaning Hillary right now, I know what I'm getting :hi:

10. Hillary has no accomplishments
She hasn't gotten anything done. The one thing she mentions, Veteran's health care, was Leahy's bill. SCHIP was Kerry & Kennedy's bill. You scratch the surface and not one thing she says is true. She got her assignment on the Watergate committee because of Bill. There's nothing there to support. And if you really had researched Obama, you'd know there is an enormous amount of work he's done for Illinois and the Senate. So you're just blowing smoke to support Hillary with no basis for it whatsoever.

15. I never heard of Obama until the DNC '04 speech.
Then never heard of him again until he declared for Prez.

You have to keep people like me in mind when you toot his horn. I've read much about what he didn't do in the Illinois senate...like take a position on "hard" legislation. He's done the same (non voting on difficult issues) in the U.S. Senate. I would have like to see him take a risk on something, anything....

The Clintons have several years leading a state and a country......I need more than "work he's done for Illinois and the Senate" ?

9. Was this Hannity and Luntz video a case of Obama supporters or general voters?
i am curious as to that - as we know, the American voting public can barely identify him, or the decade of world war two, or who's side the Russian s fought on, etc etc.

i really can't come to any conclusions based on that.

Logically, if people like someone's oratory style, does that make it a cult of personality?
Maybe they just need to be informed. Well, that is a given.

I wonder if they could name "accomplishments" by Edwards, sen. Clinton, McCain and so on, much less a relative unknown like Obama. A better comparison might be a Feingold - he has been in the Senate for a long time, but I would bet they wouldn't know a thing.

overall, it is too little to draw broad based conclusions, much less broad brushed attack meme around.

Hannity and Luntz.
Doing what they do.
When they do something manipulative about Hillary, I will support her.
doing what I do, I guess.

I hope this is an intelligent enough response, MassDemm - I am about ready for a few hours sleep. :)

12. Does believing that make you feel smarter and superior
to Obama voters? All those faddish people aren't as smart as you, right?

Well, some people aren't willing to be duped by another Clinton who shows a lot of empathy but doesn't offer any meaningful change.

17. Hillary supporters are NOT desperate....
from my observations. I'm neutral, though leaning Hillary. Her supporters outclass the Obama's for sure.

Now that I don't have to spend 98% of my DU time defending Edwards, my eyes are wide open :hi:
