9. As an ex-president, he will never be "just like any other spouse in the race"
Ex-presidents have the press following them everywhere. Every statement made within earshot of the press is fodder for the next news cycle. He knows that, and he thrives on it. He loves to be the center of attention. So there are very few "mistakes" in what he's said to the press during this campaign. He knew what the racial overtones in his earlier statements meant. And he said them with a purpose. The Clintons have always parsed their words very carefully, even down to what the meaning of "is" is. Mistake? I don't think so.
