for vague reasons. Obama has supporters who identify with the excitement or newness of his campaign. Clinton has supporters- and lots of them- who support her because of Bill. Obama has supporters who support him because he's African American. Clinton has those who support her because she's a woman.
Do you really think most people vote on hard information about the candidates' positions on issues? Do you really believe that supporters of YOUR candidate are actually smarter or more informed than supporters of your opponent?
The truth is that most people can't tell you what their candidate's voting record is. They can't describe in any but the vaguest way policies that the candidates say they'd push for.
People largely vote on intangibles and yes, they vote with their guts and on who they "like".
And there's nothing, but nothing, new about this.
