As a Hillary supporter, I think all of this cult talk is silly
Edited on Fri Feb-08-08 09:34 AM by Politicub
and a distraction from the bigger issue of defeating the GOP in November. Party politics is bound to have some resemblance to a "cult" mentality with the rallies and the like, but being part of a cult and enthusiastically supporting a candidate are two very different things. Obama isn't promising transcendence from reality with his words; he's following in the footsteps of other great Americans who have invoked the can-do spirit of our country that inspires us to do great things that are bigger than our individual selves. We're all lucky that he's on our side.

I read this morning that Bush is starting the work to "rally the conservatives" to support McCain, and I believe he will be successful at doing this. It would be the height of naivety to assume that whoever our nominee is that the election will be a cakewalk in November. Though the GOP establishment is seemingly against him now, the media has a strange love affair with McCain, and I don't expect this to go away. The GOP lusts for power, and will happily get in line come November.

It will take all of us - Obama and Clinton supporters alike - working together to defeat the GOP. I know we can do it, but we need to stay focused on the real enemy and cast all of the cult talk and rehashing of 90's era republican talking points aside.

I will be using my ignore button on threads that have nothing new to add to the discussion. That's what it's there for, because now we need to be focused on learning about McCain and his weaknesses, and working to band together with others of a like mind so we can win and thoroughly fumigate the People's House in January 2009.

1. Thank you for this post, which is full of common sense
Eventually, we will need to put our differences behind us to keep the WH out of GOP's hands. May the best Dem candidate win. :applause:

2. I'm pretty disgusted by the amazing shit people are posting on either side.
I barely posted anything in the last week...there's so little to say. I don't know how to even respond to some of the incredible, incendiary-for-no-reason crap people are posting. Like digital finger-pokes to the chest, for the sole purpose of provoking a response which will lead to a fist fight. They know who they are. Personally, while I passionately feel Hillary Clinton would be the wrong person at the wrong time, I see no purpose in the scorched-earth approach some of my fellow DUers are taking. In the end, Clinton or Obama will be in the White House. There are enough positive things to say about either one of them -- or bad things to say about the Republican candidates -- without helping the Republicans frame their debate for them.

The poster hammering on and on about Obama doing a racial swift-boating of the Clintons -- man, that's just sad. Likewise, people seem to be willing to just say/post anything about Clinton, without acknowledging that she does bring a certain gravitas to the table, and deserves at least some degree of respect just for making it this far, regardless of the eventual outcome. Either way, what utter bullshit. And so not germane to the important issues they're going to have to face in the coming months (and for one of them, years.

3. Thank you and let me say as an Obama supporter
that I've been just as disgusted by some of the threads about her. One posted this morning comes quickly- and unfortunately- to mind.

7. Thank you! We're all on the same side at the end of the day
and I'm hoping we all have some energy left from the Primaries to harness for defeating McCain.

6. It is more than silly. It is veiled racism. I mean what else can it be?
All these cult claimer posts have not one shred of meaty fact and i have read them all. Too bad these assholes do not know what a real cult is. I have lost family members to a real cult. It sucks.

8. Agreed
I'm not totally familiar with the 'cult talk' you're referring to, but whichever Dem candidate we have will be better than a WALNUTS administration.

Obama if possible. Clinton if necessary. Either way, no WALNUTS needed here.

10. It's also stupid and insulting to this Clinton supporter
who has seen the damage a real cult can cause...

but who is no longer surprised by the scope or volume of the inaccurate, idiotic and sometimes simply vile judgement displayed on DU.

12. It's not only silly, it's divisive. We need to be focusing on issues
and working to elect a Democratic President, not fighting among ourselves.

15. Right on, Arkansas granny!
We know that the GOP nominee will be McCain, and the GOP may hedge its bets by persuading him to select the odious Huckabee as his running mate, to capture the evangelical base.

17. Any cult talk is harmful to us all now
even when it is being done in jest, or as satire. We need more enthusiasm for Democratic candidates, not less. We also need more reasoned discussions about the issues and the strengths and weaknesses of our candidates, and far fewer heated discussions about the strengths and weaknesses of our candidate's suupporters. I've been speaking up against inane cult talk on threads where cults are being talked about. I urge others to do the same.
