Is McCain looking to be a 4 year president?
Listening to Romney's speech yesterday, it gave me the impression he's already thinking about 2012... and then I wondered: or either he's thinking about a McCain loss in 08, or he's thinking about McCain's age. He'll be 75 or 76 in 2012, and I don't see Americans electing someone that old for 4 more years of presidency. Maybe Romney is thinking about topping the Rep. ticket in '12 after McCain, if he wins in November, decides not to run anymore.

3. Romney is assuming a Dem will win. Anyone who thinks McCain would voluntarily
give up power, once he's spent his whole post-war life grasping at it, is naive. He could have a stroke, a recurrence of cancer, a heart attack, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's--anything while in office--and they'll prop him up, and the Republican powers that be will cover for him like they did for Reagan.

5. I'm not so sure
Boston Globe Article

McCain's words were, "If I said I was running for eight years, I'm not sure that would be a vote getter." He went on to say, "You shouldn't run for eight years. Because then you think you've got eight years to get these things done."

At his age, running on an 8 year plan simply does not make sense.

7. That's assuming honesty on his part. He won't step down--ever. If he
made it to the WH, they'd have to carry him out, stiff and in a box.

... for Republicans

they're playing to hold seats in the congress and state houses, and regroup for 2012 on the presidency

26. I think you're totally right about that.
The more I watch this race unfold, the more it seems the Republicans just aren't trying very hard this time. I'm also of the opinion that they're considering the Presidency a wash this time and are just trying to hold onto what they can in the Congress. They'll be back with a vengeance in 2012.

8. I had a premonition yesterday that McCain will pick Mitt as his running mate
...that the deal was sealed with persuasion by the powers that be in the Republican Party which convinced Mitt to call it quits (and give it up to the War Party)-- still gives him a chance for a Pres bid in 2012.

10. I don't see it.
THey can't stand each other.

Mitwit called it quits because there was no way for him to win. Even his personal fortune couldn't buy him the White House. And I think he's just too damn full of himself to settle for #2 on the ticket.

17. And Reagan couldn't stand Poppy...
During the RNC in 1980, he specifically stated that he would never pick GHWB as his running mate - yet three days later he did.

When the arms start to get twisted, anything goes.

22. Well, that was yesterday's premonition
Today's may be totally different. :)

Seriously, though, as other posters have pointed out, the candidates aren't the ones calling the shots. They'll do what they are told. end of story -- especially with the Repug authoritarians

16. When asked in an interview he said:
He would be 72 when sworn into office, younger than Reagan in his second term.

Asked if he was going to serve only one term, McCain said he could not say that.

His 96 year old mother shows some long living genes.

He will fight hard to win, this is his last shot. He quoted Goldwater in 2000: "once you get bit by the presidential bug, the only cure for it is death".

20. That makes me wonder about his health even more.
If McCain's not 100% confident that he'll serve two terms, what does that say about his evaluation of his own health?

Usually politicians are the first to say "I'm completely healthy, everything's fine". If McCain isn't sure that he'll make two terms, he could be in pretty bad shape.

He really doesn't look that well. I doubt he'd last more than one term.
