MSNBC's David Shuster has been temporarily suspended
from appearing on all NBC news broadcasts except to offer his apology.

SEATTLE - A distasteful comment about Chelsea Clinton by an MSNBC anchor could imperil Hillary Rodham Clinton's participation in future presidential debates on the network, a Clinton spokesman said.

In a conference call with reporters, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson on Friday excoriated MSNBC's David Shuster for suggesting the Clinton campaign had "pimped out" 27-year old Chelsea by having her place phone calls to Democratic Party superdelegates on her mother's behalf. Wolfson called the comment "beneath contempt" and disgusting.

"I, at this point, can't envision a scenario where we would continue to engage in debates on that network," he added.

MSNBC said Shuster, who apologized on the air for his comment, has been temporarily suspended from appearing on all NBC news broadcasts except to offer his apology.

NBC News takes these matters seriously, and offers our sincere regrets to the Clintons for the remarks," MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said, adding the network was hopeful the debate would take place as planned.

44. Yup. Just like the campaign against Tweety resulted in positive
news coverage and no criticism. They're playing it like a violin.

The backlash, which they dont see, is that the media is a huge family. Other members of the "family" were VERY upset that Matthews was forced to apologize by the CLintons. There was a backlash and there will be for this as well. It may not be immediate or obvious, but the seething resentment toward the Clintons will only grow.

And you know this how? Who are these "other members"?

Or is this more of the projection that goes on here lately?

131. There was an entire segment, just one I can name without researching, on
Morning Joe when they were broadcasting from the primary trail - all of them were ranting about how incensed they were about Matthews being forced to apologize by the Clintons and the organized campaign to bring pressure on MSNBC for said apology. Now, if you want to call me a liar simply because I stated something that happened and that I heard and that was broadcast on television, that's fine. Knock yourself out.

Hillary can take the heat and always has. I've been saying that as long as he apologizes to Chelsea, I'm good with that. But it wasn't my daughter being called a political whore. It also doesn't change the fact this was part of a pattern with this network.

76. that's what I've been saying. We have been screaming for the past
seven years about government influence over the press. By the way, I solemnly believe that if the press hadn't been heavy-handed by the WH, we wouldn't be in Iraq as we speak. I don't like it when it comes from the right, and am even more appalled that the left is playing the same game.

Remember how pissed a lot of us were when Bill Maher & Phil Donahue got cancelled because of the faux outrage of the right wing loons? Well this is very reminiscent of that, and I don't mind saying it scares me a bit; that we've become "them".

HRC's supporters have been bullying radio talk show hosts and news people for weeks now, for what they perceive as a media "bias" for Obama. They certainly have a right to do that, but they've turned their venom on the handful of people who have kept us sane these past seven years? It's crazy.

People throw around words like "pimp" and "ho" and don't think that there is underlying meaning. But there is.

I'm tired of offensive words creeping into our everyday vocabulary.

And believe me, if he had said Obama was pimping his wife or daughter, the backlash would have been 20 times worse. Make that 2000 times worse.

the Clinton's are very savvy at massaging and manipulating the media, not to say that Schuster wasn't wrong or dumb for saying what he said but the Clinton's know how to cherry pick.

I also saw Tom Delay on Hardball rake McCain over the coals and said insane things like "it's arrogant to say man is causing global warming", just sayin' lots of insane shit being said.

Among people under 35, pimping out someone typically has nothing to do with sex. It's a synonym for "selling hard."

45. He Said They Pimped Her Out ...
You pimp out a whore:

pimp-

A pimp finds and manages clients for prostitutes and engages them in prostitution (in brothels in most cases and some cases street prostitution) in order to profit from their earnings. Typically, a pimp will not force prostitutes to stay with him, although some have been known to be abusive in order to keep their prostitutes submissive or to maximize profits. A pimp may also offer to protect his prostitutes from rival pimps and prostitutes, or from abusive clients. He can also enable a prostitute to work in a particular area under his control. Pimping is illegal in many countries.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pimp

Prostitution is sexual activity in exchange for remuneration. The legal status of prostitution varies in different countries, from punishable by death to complete legality. The term is also used more loosely to indicate someone who engages in sexual acts that are disapproved of<1>, such as sexual promiscuity or sex outside of marriage. Cultural usage varies widely, and the use of the term as a pejorative indicates acts that are not formally considered prostitution in a cultural context

it is defined as 'to exploit'

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/pimp

In which case you can legitmately say Obama pimps Kennedy.

But I guess Shuster was taking in consideration how the Clintons were overly protective(rightfully so) of her up until now when they need her to sway public opinion of them.

What mother wouldn't be offended at having someone imply on national television that her daughter is a whore? If someone said this about my daughter, the outrage would not be fabricated. If someone said this about me, I assure you my mother's outrage would not be fabricated.

The most frequent verbal attack on a woman usually involves her sexuality. Don't be shocked when it pisses us off.

Those who don't toe the line don't get invited back and if it's not controversial it does not draw viewers. No viewers, no ratings, no commercials equals no revenue and that is the bottom line. I bet that the numbers for tonight's programming has skyrocketed due to Schuster's ridiculous commentary.

119. The victim card played over and over and over again
Edited on Fri Feb-08-08 04:58 PM by Tropics_Dude83
I love women. When Nancy Pelosi became speaker, I was overjoyed to see a female speaker at last and love her leadership. I loved Janet Reno tremendously. Everyone else hated her unfairly. I found her to be one of the best attorney generals the U.S. has ever had. I strongly supported Claire Mckaskil in her primary and general election. I was a strong and voicferous backer of Christine Gregorie when she fought back against the Republican effort to steal the Washington state governorship. OK? Got that. In fact, I like female politicans more than male OK?

Now that I have inocculated myself, this is disgusting and the Clinton campaign is disgusting. Clinton won the NY senate race because a) of sympathy for her after the Lewinsky scandal and B) because Rick Lazio "violated" her space during the debate. She played the victim card to win the NY Senate seat and she is playing the victim card now to try to get all the way to the presidency. It is disgusting. She played the victim card/crying card to win the New Hampshire primary as well. Disgusting.

David Schuster has been of the most vociferous anti-republican and pro-democrat, anti war voices on MSNBC. He made a mistake and I do not condone the comments in any way.

Poor poor Hillary. The "Goldwater girl" while Johnson and MLK Jr. were fighting for civil rights has had such a tough tough life. I am sick of it. I am sick to death of it.

I'd vote for Nancy Pelosi, I'd vote for Janet Reno, Cantwell and Murray are 2 of my favourite senators, I'd vote for Carole Mosely-Braun but never ever for this woman who is playing the poor poor me card over and over and over again.

Ugh. And what kind of elitist bigoted comment was this "I'm not some type of Tammy Wynette standing by man baking cookies." What about the millions of stay at home moms who stay at home and do not work so that their kids are raised properly? Ugh again.

146. Would you feel the same way if Shuster made that comment
about Mrs Obama?

120. Good lord. The Clinton family is going to implode.
Good lord. The Clinton family is going to implode in the General Election. Shuster makes one ill advised remark and is silenced even after he apologized? Yet, Hillary wants to debate on Fox News who have again and again implied that Obama is a terrorist? Pathetic. If Chelsea can't handle that, then she might as well go lock herself in a closet, because if her mother wins the nomination the girl is going to be torn to shreds. She put herself out there on behalf of her mother. She is not immune to attacks.

And before the, "Oh but she's their daughter and it's mean... and... and..." crowd comes out - save your righteous indignation. I've been on DU long enough to know how shit goes down, and had he said it about one or both of the Bush twins, everyone here would have broke out in spontaneous celebration. So I am not interested in hearing your hypocritical and self-righteous responses.

Obama should refuse to debate Hillary anywhere but MSNBC.

124. The New York Times received an e-mail from MSNBC's Vice President for media relations
Edited on Fri Feb-08-08 05:14 PM by Maribelle
Jeremy Gaines, MSNBC’s vice president for media relations, just sent the following comment via e-mail:

On Thursday’s “Tucker” on MSNBC, David Shuster, who was serving as guest-host of the program, made a comment about Chelsea Clinton and the Clinton campaign that was irresponsible and inappropriate. Shuster, who apologized this morning on MSNBC and will again this evening, has been suspended from appearing on all NBC News broadcasts, other than to make his apology. He has also extended an apology to the Clinton family. NBC News takes these matters seriously, and offers our sincere regrets to the Clintons for the remarks.

Both the Clinton and Obama campaigns accepted invitations from us on Thursday evening to participate in a February 26th debate. Our conversations with the Clinton campaign about their participation continue today, and we are hopeful that the event will take place as planned.

132. It wouldnt have bothered me.
Im not the type to make a big deal out of nothing. DS has ALWAYS defended the Clintons... yet the ONE time he says something unfortunate, the Clinton people turn on him for political gain. Its disgusting. The phrase "pimped out" doesnt infuriate me no matter how much some people wish it would. Christ. If free speech only applies to the things that dont offend anyone, then there is no point in calling it free speech. Its absurd.

152. My question is: WHY wasn't TWEETY ever suspended?!?
He's been out of line on soooo many occasions. I guess NBC has it's favorites. Tweety must be very well connected.
