Landlord: Clinton staff stiffed me on rent

PORTSMOUTH — Rochester physician Terry Bennett said he rented a city building to people who worked for Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign — and skipped town without paying the bill.

Making matters worse, Bennett said, the 3,000-square-foot building at 236 Union St. was left trashed. Campaign signs were left lying all over the place, he said.

"It's a very nice little building, with an 1,800-foot warehouse and the rest can be offices," Bennett said. "There's a full kitchen and bath. They used it as a campaign center and dormitory. I expected them to hand the Realtor a check as they left. They did not."

Whitney said he has been trying to collect rent for four weeks.

"I sent about 20 e-mails," said Whitney. "I hear the Clinton campaign is out of money. Maybe the woman got laid off. I called, but they will not return any of my calls."

This week, national news reports said Hillary Clinton loaned her campaign $5 million of her personal fortune. Bennett said he finds it hard to believe she can't afford $500.

When the group did not give him a check for the amount up front, as per the agreement, Whitney said, he gave them the benefit of the doubt.

"But they packed up and left," he said.

Geez, things look even tougher than I thought. Time for another personal loan?

1. This was back in NH.. this was about the time that some of the campaign
staffers were going without pay. This is probably resolved now with the personal loan infusion and online fundraising.

2. Also, John Kerry ate my pizza!
Remember that one?

Are you seriously doubting "corportist" (if that non-word is spelled right) Clinton's ability to raise cash? Of course it makes it hard when competing against a flush televangelist.

4. I suppose this is going to make the rounds here ....
Among those who prefer simple attacks based on small, understandable issues like this .....

As mentioned on anther thread with exactly the same subject: The last time this 'happened', it was found to be false ......

It could be that, in all the hubbub, payment was forgotten ..... Im pretty sure Hillary didn't plan on defrauding the good people of New Hampshire ....

But it does sound good to those who feel like whuppin some Democratic politician ass .... Eh ?

10. I agree - In New England there is a bit of sport in gifting to a campaign so you can claim non
payment later.

I'll wait until I see the lease.

13. Not a Clinton supporter, but this is probably an honest mistake.
My guess is that it is campaign policy to pre-pay for it's temporary field offices, and after someone missed that first check it was probably more or less fubared by their bureaucracy and inertia.

Just remember the person how had the job of signing that check is probably doing the equivalent of 10 full time jobs right now and the person who is supposed to write that check and put it into the signers had probably has about 5 full time jobs right now.
