Obama rally in Portland ME creates massive traffic jam

Downtown traffic was at a near standstill, and cars were bumper-to-bumper on the I-395 offramps on to Main Street.

"The cars keep coming. Unbelievable," said Tom Dwelley, 56, of Bangor, who had wanted to hear Obama speak but decided the line was too long.

Obama's plane touched down at around 1:40 p.m. at Bangor's airport, arriving from Chicago. He immediately went to Nicky's Diner on Union Street, surprising the luncheon crowd.

Crowds are converging today to hear Sen. Barack Obama speak at the Bangor Auditorium. At 12:30 p.m., three hours before he was scheduled to speak, the line of people waiting to get into the auditorium had already stretched at least a quarter of a mile, reaching down Main Street to the Bangor Daily News building.
