Public school teachers would be fired for Shuster's remarks
Most public school teachers in my district are younger than Shuster and probably paid a tenth of what he makes, if that. They certainly are used to this type of language, more so than a forty something like Shuster. But they would not use this language in the classroom or even about other adults in the workplace. If they did, they wouldn't be there. Why are the professional standards so much higher for low-paid teachers with no one to write scripts for them, no personal assistants, no researchers, no lunch breaks half the time? I am sick of these overpaid corporate media blowhards. They have no idea of what it's like to actually work in the real world.

This post is from the point of view of a teacher because I am one. But I am sure it applies to many other professions as well.

1. Heck public school teacher's would be fired for saying, "I didn't have sex with that woman" right?
Bill and Hill are worth around 35 million, at least.

When is Hill going to fire Bill?

2. Pimped out is a common term in consulting and other professions.
I'm not sure if some people are just unaware/sheltered from this use or they are just spinning to create trouble. Here are some links I found where the term is used in the same manner in was on msnbc. I don't include the thousands of references where people 'pimp out their cars' or other items.

How Abramoff Pimped Out The President
According to the Texas Observer:

Abramoff was so closely tied to the Bush Administration that he could, and did, charge two of his clients $25,000 for a White House lunch date and a meeting with the President.

Sure he pimped out his voice in the latter part of his career. Sure his choice of singing partners off the operatic stage is…questionable at best.

Because this is the second time he’s pimped out this Oscar-winning meal ticket for a hefty paycheck, maybe Anthony Hopkins should be forced to give his statuette back.

It no longer is about helping and healing, its about how much more money I can make and how can I get paid on the products I’m putting in my patients. Its the hospitals and the patients that loose out. The money that is paid to the surgeon should be paid to the hospital since it is their O.R.’s that are being pimped out for the doctors kickback cash.

5. I'm gonna kiss you on the mouth!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, dbonds! This is exactly what came to mind when I first heard about this whole kerfuffle. I've been gone and was going to research examples when I got home, but you did a fine job. I have seen and heard that kind of completely non-sexual, non-sexist usage quite a number of times.

Shuster's language was inelegant and a case can be made that journalists should use slang expressions, redefined words/phrases, and neologisms sparingly in the interest of accurate communication, but all this rumpus is ridiculous. I canNOT believe he was suspended.

I realize emotions are running high all around and for the best of all possible reasons -- we are all passionate about the enormous job to be done cleaning up the Bush mess -- but we need to remember that very soon we will all be backing the same candidate.

BTW, no I am not an Obama supporter looking for a chance to bash Hillary. I am an Edwards supporter who will fight hard for the Democratic nominee, whoever that turns out to be.

9. I agree that Schuster meant it in the above way. However, his
reaction to the situation is the problem. I just read the e-mails, and I'm shaking my head. He could have just apologized, saying it didn't come out the way he meant it, and leave it at that.

6. Probably. But it wouldn't be fair for only one teacher to be fired when others say much worse.

8. People on TV seem to live under a different set of rules than the rest of us.
I can't figure out why Schuster didn't just make a heartfelt apology, and be done with it. Reading the e-mail exchange, it seems he continues to be tone deaf to the problem of what he said.
