So Barack can win the general election. How?
Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 06:04 PM by MassDemm
His base is black voters and upper class liberal democrats.
The republicans never target those demographics. They know they will never win those votes.

Hillary's base, on the other hand has women and blue collar workers.
The exact demographics that republicans target and sway to their side.

So who really has a better shot? Don't let the media do your thinking for you.

35. Neither candidate can unite the country
I'm sorry, but the country is soooo divided on so many issues, it's going to take more than 4-8 years to bring us together. Let's hope the whoever is the victor can stop the atomization and reverse the trend. Frankly, I think they're both up to it.

It's worked in the past, but there is a reason Obama appeals to people of both parties and that approach is not the reason why.

rip Obama into little itty bitty pieces and it will be the most disheartening thing that has ever happened to us.
By the time they are done, anyone who still has hope for change is going to be broken.

Even if he manages to get elected, he will become our new Jimmy Carter. A Brilliant and hope filled man who would have been a fine President if allowed.

This is why they want him. Desperately.

41. Yawn
Nonsense.

Jimmy Carter had the moral courage to recognize that, while terrible, the response to the hostage takeover of our embassy in Iran was not to spend $450 billion on a war costing thousands of lives.

If that's the choice we have to make, I'll take Carter and Obama.

Hope for Hope's sake with little else to go on.

But listen to your MSM masters --pull the lever for Obama.

You'll need Hillary (and her supporters) in your support group to pick up the pieces and carry on in strength, while you all stare slack jawed in disbelief as the GOP and the MSM join forces to crush him into dust.

Don't worry -- we'll all help you out for the sake of the Party.

8. I'll be frank...
Hillary riles the right like one else. They will turn out in droves to bury her, and they should. She is yesterday, a carpetbagger who moved to NY just to run and get in this position. She will unearth all the anti-Bill hate we lived through in the '90s.
Barak, meanwhile, is emblematic of a new day. Bush fatigue will lead some repukes to support him, especially in the face of a McInsane nomination.
I trash Billary a lot, but I voted for Bill twice. I adore Gore. I supported Edwards. But Obama is our hope.

18. At least Barack Obama has the Dems in his corner...
Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 06:11 PM by TwoSparkles
The Dems will overwhelmingly unite around Obama.

The latest polling I saw, showed that 19 percent of Democrats would vote
against Hillary Clinton, and for someone else. She doesn't even have the
full support of her own party. Against McCain, that would be a disaster.

Hillary can't pick off Independents like Obama. Obama appeals to Independents, and many have
caucused and voted for him in our Dem primary.

Furthermore, Obama has some support from disenfranchised Republicans
who do not like the war and do not like Bush. No way can Hillary
appeal to any Republicans.

Also, Obama is fueling massive turnout in our Dem primary. He can
surely take credit for a good portion for the unprecedented turnout
in these primaries. He will take that with him, into the GE.
The Republicans, have not really increased their turnout.

I'm certainly not letting the media do my thinking for me. I've
never heard the media suggesting that Obama has a better shot.
It's barely discussed.

However, clearly--Clinton is so polarizing and so hated. She would galvanize
the Republicans to vote against her. Hillary would increase Republican
turnout against the Dems. Obama would pick up some of that support.

Hands down...Obama is more electable.

Dare I say it, republicans, who are supporting him.

He's on message to the country, not some demographic group.

22. really? you need help with this? how lame.
here's a clue for you: Pew and Gallup all show dems voting overwhelmingly for whoever is the nominee. Obama may lose some latino vote, but he's not going to bleed dems to McCain, anymore than Hillary is. And she may bleed some male voters, but the dems will vote for a dem. And even better, Obama attracts indies and disaffected repubs.

Unlike YOU, I don't watch any TV or listen to trasy radio. So of course I don't let the media think for me.

25. I cant believe you asked that
First off, i think any political observer would say that if you woke up the morning after the General and said a DEM won with 54% of the vote they would say its OBAMA, if my mom who is 72 and hasnt voted for a DEM since RFK can go out in the snow in Idaho and caucus for him then there is something there. Second of all, he WONT lose (neither will Hillary) a single state that Kerry won. Which means you only have to win one other state (even winning New Mexico and Iowa- Gore states in 2000 wont put either over) so most likely Colorado or OHIO (possibly MO) Maybe Nevada and Floridas a lost cause I believe that have rigged that state. So there is your General Stategy for OBAMA. And I know if Hillary is nominated she could still win the above New Mexico/IOWA AND ARKANSAS and STILL NEED another state. The election will come down to Colorado and and OHIO for a win, with the dems campaigning in FLORIDA, ARK (if hillary) MO, IOWA, NEW MEXICO, and OHIO. The election strategy is exactly the same (minus ARK if OBAMA is the nominee). No finesse, no spin thats it. Pretty much like Kerry went for gore states (plus Bush conceded New Hampshire) and OHIO. The Popular Vote total will be higher (because he will win red state independents--ironic), but they both have the same strategy. Try if you can to punch a whole in the strategy, but its been set for quite a while now.

Congrats on feeding the machine.

Nevermind the fact that your assertion has absolutely no basis in fact. But that's OK.

34. A 30% increase in black voter turn out
helps in several swing states and makes at least a couple of Southern states competitive.

And the trend so far is independents supporting Obama so that indicates he has the better chance of winning them in November.

40. Hmm. Are you being thick or just snarky?
These are their bases in the primaries. In the GE, they're all Democrats. GE polls vs. McCain have shown Obama pulling close to 3/4 of the black vote, half the white vote, and a majority of independents. That's a winning coalition right there.

50. Now we're back to who has a stronger base. I happen to think Hillary does.
She isn't depending on Indies, which will go to McCain.

She has the democratic base, plus blue collar workers and republican women as well as democratic women.

You state that Clinton isn't depending on indies and yet you think she's going to win?

Right.

Obama is going to win because he has the base and the indies.

51. As those who don't have the time to look at the candidates really close up
and so they pick the "safe" bet, Hillary, via the Clinton name recognition.....they soon will understand that Hillary was the corporate candidate, and Obama was the candidate of the people.

They will vote for Obama gladly during the General Election.

Hillary's base is only hers via default.

66. yeah, the "corporate" candidate
Do you really think that resonates with anyone outside of the far left? That might work in a primary, but it's a joke in the general.

I hope to god this kind of reasoning is not what's driving the Obama campaign.

72. Obama has plenty of people supporting him across all demographics
To imply that Obama's support is "black voters and upper class liberal democrats" is Hillaryworld spin.

He has support from all age groups and the full demographic bandwidth. He also has support of moderates and Independents.

How does Obama win the GE against McCain? Imagine a 20-ton weight around McCain's neck with his unending support of the Iraq War. Obama will link the war to how much money has been squandered, how much lives have been lost and how long McCain wants to stay there. He can freely do it and say he voted for funding (rightfully) to support the troops in harm's way and support veterans. McCain will look like a tired, old sad story that will make the Bob Dole landslide and perhaps the Goldwater landslide look like kid's play.

What would Hillary do? Mobilize the Repug base like no other and she couldn't fight against McCain on the war. Add that with her nomination, MANY democrats will not even vote for her. She's starting with a 48% unlikeable perception off the block. That is political suicide for the Democratic Party who would also have to deal with the negative coat tails her nomination would bring.

We need to WIN the White House and not appease the Clintons on their journey to make it all about themselves at our expense.
