Obama Voters: Would You Cross Over to McCain if Hillary Won?
I was at an Obama rally this week, and met two voters who said they'd go for McCain if Hillary won the nomination. One called himself a Democrat, but said Hillary is too polarizing. The other was a Republican who said Obama is the ONLY Democrat she'll vote for, because she thinks he can unite the country. Is anyone else hearing this? Obama himself is saying that Hillary's supporters will vote for him, but his would not necessarily vote for her.

So, no Obama, no Independents. McCain would get most of those votes.

4. Nope. But I know someone who would.
A coworker who is an independent, and says he likes Obama best, but might vote for McCain if Hillary is the nominee.

I don't like to talk politics much at work so I didn't dig into his reasons, but it seems he has bought into the MSM hero worship of McCain, and actually thinks he's a moderate.

16. Actually, McCain is moderate on several domestic issues...
i.e., immigration, the environment, stem cell research, campaign finance reform, which is why the conservative base hate him so much, but his foreign policy ideas scare the crap out of me.

I'm not a huge Hillary fan, but I will be a Hillary supporter if she wins the nomination. She isn't my preferred candidate, but I think that she would be a fine president. Strange how these sentiments feel distant on DU these days.

13. That's Half A Vote For McCain Then, And Equally As Stupid.
Your 'solution' accomplishes nothing. It is no less dumb of a decision than voting for McCain outright.

35. hey you-
It's good to 'see' you- even if it is because your frustrated with something I've said.

I plan to vote for the Dem candidate- and I believe that will be Obama- If it is Hillary, I have also planned to vote Dem regardless, with much less enthusiasm. As this primary has dragged on though, there are things being done and said by Hillary and those who professionally represent her, which are making this plan more and more difficult to hold onto firmly.

My vote is not something I take lightly- and I have never not voted in either a primary or general election since I was 18- which is a looooooong time-

If I voted for McCain- I would directly add to his vote count- If the day came that I could not live with myself if I cast a vote to elect Hillary- (and I sincerely hope it doesn't) I wouldn't simply not vote- I wouldn't vote for Nader or any rogue 3rd party candidate- I would vote for a Dem. That doesn't equate to voting FOR McCain, because I wouldn't be giving HIM my vote, while refusing to cast it for Hillary- Do you not see this?

You can call me all the names you want OMC- You can question my 'loyalty' - my intelligence- my sanity. But none of that will really factor into my final choice. I've had to live with the consequences of some decisions that I have made in life, AGAINST my own deep convictions, and I'm just not able or willing to do that any more.

I wish you all good things-

:hi:

peace~

48. I Just Know How Important This GE Is. Every Vote Counts And Anyone Not Voting For The Dem Is
working against their own interests. That's why I find it to be stupid. The reason I say half a vote for McCain is because of the following: Say McCain has 10 votes and Clinton has 6 votes. If you vote for Hillary, that gap is closed by one. If you voted for McCain, that gap is increased by one, but the spread is increased by two, since had it been for Hillary the count would be 10-7, going to McCain it would be 11-6, for a difference of votes of 5-3. That means each vote cast for our opponent instead of OUR candidate, brings a 2 point difference in results. But if you DON'T vote for either, then the total is still 10-6, for a difference of 4. Since a vote for Hillary would've caused a differential of 3, a vote for McCain a differential of 5, and not voting at all a differential of 4, it is almost like a half of vote for McCain (1 point differential difference as opposed to 2 point differential difference). Each two people that choose to not vote at all as opposed to the dem, effectively equal ONE person voting for the republican. It is quite logically, a half a vote for our opposition. I hope you can see what I mean.

By the way, I wish nothing but good things to come for you as well. :)

15. That's insane.
Did those people fall out of the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down? I can't imagine anybody who supports either Hillary or Obama going over to McCain. However much you may dislike your candidate's opponent, McCain is antithetical to everything either of them stands for. McCain = more war, more tax breaks for the rich, more wingnut Supreme Court justices, more illegal wiretapping, more of everything that sucks about Bush. Maybe he won't torture people so much; otherwise he IS Bush.

Anyone who would throw our civil liberties and our health and safety and economic interests under the bus just because they didn't get their way when the nominee was chosen needs a severe ass-kicking. All you rabid partisans: Guess what; it's not about YOU.

19. This WP article sums it up for many Obama supporters

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/09/AR2008020902140.html

Snippet:
But as much as they appreciated a glance inside the machinery of retail politics and contemporary celebrity, most students seemed far more taken with Barack Obama or John McCain than with the former first lady.

"We're mostly for Obama or apathetic," said Patrick O'Malley, a senior at Yorktown High who considers Clinton "manipulative and underhanded."

"Hillary is so establishment," said Morgan Henry, a junior at Wakefield High who will cast his first vote for Obama. "And I don't want two presidents." He quoted his stepfather's comment that he's for Obama but would switch to McCain if Clinton wins the Democratic nomination, "because even though he doesn't agree with McCain on issues, he respects his honesty and integrity."

...

Every one of the women I spoke to who avidly support Clinton said they like Obama and would have no problem voting for him in November. But it's also true that among the many Obama supporters I talked to in the gym, well more than half said they would at least consider voting for McCain over Clinton.

21. No... I wouldn't vote for either of them.
I cannot vote for a candidate who voted to start the Iraq war.

And furthermore, if she wins the nomination due to the super delegates, and the pledged delegates go for Obama... I'm done with the party completely.

I'm not just done with the party, I'm done with politics. This is OUR decision, not some elected officials who count for 10,000 votes each.

Hillary.

However, if Obama does not do everything in his power to persuade his supporters to vote for Hillary is she wins the nomination, then he shouldn't be running as a Democrat IMO.

The same is true for Hillary.
