With all of the crap being allowed, why should I contribute this fund drive?

Someone tell me why I should donate (albeit small contribution) with all of the drive by posters/members tarnishing and poisoning the boards. This forum is like watching someone puke in a cafeteria. And after this post has run it's course, I'm hiding the "primaries" forum permanently.

Someone tell me, you've all been so good at throwing everything else against the wall.

14. You shouldn't donate.

During the 2004 primary, our moderating was much more fascist and in-your-face than it is now. We had many, extremely restrictive rules, and we banned many Duers. In other words, "all of the crap" was not allowed. And guess what? It was also our worst fund drive ever.

I have always said that if people do not wish to donate, I would prefer that they not do so.

Hopefully there are others who understand the complex no-win situation we find ourselves in right now, and who will be willing to donate. If not, well, we'll scrape by for three months. Hopefully the primaries will be done by then.

The reason we are more lenient this time is that in hindsight, we don't think our approach last time was particularly effective. People still posted crap then, too, even with our authoritarian moderation. Basically, 2004 was like 2008, except we finished the primary season in 2004 with a lot of banned members.

Oh, and in 2004 everyone was always accusing me and the moderators of bias in favor of one candidate or another.

It was a complete waste. I banged my head against a wall for a year, for nothing.

And if the "cafeteria food fight" is bothering you, go hang out at one of the groups (another reason to donate-you can post there then). There are always interesting folks in the groups talking about things that inform in a polite way.

...inspired me to donate for the first time ever. I use the "ignore" feature so much, I'm surprised I'm not being charged for the space.

I've also used the "hide thread" feature about 35 times today, so...at a dollar per, it is so worth it.

I'm not sure why people shy from using those features to improve the DU experience. I originally signed up with an account to use that feature so I could read all the great resources here in peace. Shrug. YMMV. Peace.
