New RI Poll: Clinton 36% - Obama 28%

by matthewRI
Mon Feb 11, 2008 at 08:55:17 AM PST
A new Brown University poll of 474 likely Democratic primary voters in Rhode Island (2/9-2/10 with a MoE of 5%) shows that Hillary Clinton holds a slim lead over Barack Obama.

Hillary Clinton - 36%
Barack Obama - 28%
Uncommitted - 27%
Undecided - 9%

Remember that Brown University's last poll in September showed Clinton with 35% and 16% for Obama. Thus, Obama has seen significant movement while Clinton has stagnated.

1. 27% uncommitted.
Lets see what winning 8 or 9 straight states does to that uncommitted.

2. Good news
Rhode Island is a state that Clinton should have locked up by now; older, blue-collar, strong Democratic machine. The fact that Obama is closing in on Clinton is excellent news!

And the comment upthread about RI and though it's probably one of the bluest if not THE bluest states the DLC is HUGE here.

Still since this is the first time in my history of voting where our primary could perhaps make a difference I'll bet turnout will really high.

BC once joked that he was an honorary Rhode Islander because he came here so often.

So go figure.

4. Former Republican Senator Lincoln Chaffee endorsed Obama late last week
He (and his family name) still holds a lot of pull there.

Oh, and before some Hillary people start in with the "theres another Republican supporting Obama" meme, Chaffee is now an independant after getting screwed over by the GOP in 2006 for voting no on the IWR.

He's a good guy, not the usual Republican.

10. He was always one of the few repubs I liked
Bill Maher and the Daily Show use to have him on. I am glad to hear he went independent.

11. I did not know about that
That's really nice, I like Chaffee. I remember some comments he made shortly after losing in 06, basically saying he is glad he lost since that's what gave the dems control of the Senate. He is indeed a good guy.

18. Now we know what BROWN can do for Hillary: shill
It's all about the poll sample, who was in it, whether they are representative, and whether they questions enhanced or reduced the probability the poll respondent would pick someone.

36% uncommitted or undecided? Seems unlikely.

20. The poll says 36% for Uncommitted and Undecided.
Uncommitted 27% plus Undecided 9% = 36%. That's if you believe the poll which I don't. Not that many people are undecided or uncommitted at this point.
