Young voters courted in Wisconsin; Obama urged to debate

By SCOTT BAUER
Associated Press Writer

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Both Democratic candidates for president are targeting young voters in Wisconsin, with Chelsea Clinton making stops on college campuses Monday and Barack Obama planning a rally Tuesday at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

New York Sen. Hillary Clinton's daughter made stops at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and near Marquette University before heading to UW-Madison to speak to hundreds of students at the union. She planned additional visits at university campuses in Eau Claire and La Crosse on Tuesday.

Thus far, she's the only Clinton Wisconsin voters have seen this year.

Her mother wasn't scheduled to appear until a Democratic dinner in Milwaukee on Saturday night, three days before the Feb. 19 primary. Campaign spokeswoman Carly Lindauer said more events with Clinton are expected to be added.

All the candidates, but especially Clinton and Obama, have been reaching out to younger voters like 25-year-old Joi Ridley. She went to hear Chelsea Clinton in Madison but said she was leaning toward voting for Obama.

Both Clinton and Obama were scheduled to attend the Democratic Party dinner Saturday night in Milwaukee.

Clinton also agreed to appear at a debate at Marquette University, but Obama has not responded to the invitation. U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin and Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton called on him Monday to do so, saying it was the best way for Wisconsin voters to see where the candidates stand on issues.

Obama's spokesman Dan Leistikow said his schedule is still being put together.
