McCain vs. Clinton vs. Obama - SFGate
Edited on Mon Feb-11-08 06:35 PM by WillyT
<snip>

Team Clinton is dismissing polls showing that Barack Obama beats likely GOP nominee John McCain in a national matchup. Top Clinton strategist Mark Penn said Clinton has been vetted by the Republican attack machine that misportrayed Al Gore and took John Kerry down from a 17 point lead in early 2004 against President Bush to a loss on election day.

With McCain obviously expected to focus on national security, his supposed strong suit, Penn calculates that Hillary's "strong and right" will beat McCain's "strong and wrong" on the Iraq front, while Obama lags in classic Democratic fashion as "weak and right."

Obama's retort is that Clinton voted with McCain on Iraq, making it hard for her to disguish herself because she's in the same "strong and wrong" camp as McCain.

The Clinton campaign is reeling from huge losses over the weekend, where Obama swept five contests by stunning margins that topped two thirds of the vote in Washington and Nebraska. Another sweep is expected in tomorrow's Potomac Primary, where Clinton once had a solid chance in critical and conservative Virginia, but polls now show Obama in a clear lead. Clinton is betting the bank on delegate-rich Ohio and Texas on March 4. It appears they have all but written off Wisconsin, despite a heavy blue-collar electorate that has so far favored Clinton.
