Hillary has it all; Money, Establishment Support, Name Rec, Bill, and yet.....
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 02:09 AM by FrenchieCat
This priviledge lady, afforded all of the advantages that any presidential candidate could only die for, and has claimed herself to be an experienced "Doer" that gets it "done" from Day One

couldn't foresee anything but presumed victory
and
wasn't even prepared enough to have a Plan B.

She underestimated her opponent, and that is not a sign of sound judgement--

It is already bad enough that we've had to deal with the repercussion of that loser NAFTA, Failed health plan proposals that set us back 15 years, a badly designed Bankruptcy law, A Telecommunications Act that led to the circus known as Monica Impeachment, loss of congress from 1994 till 2006, 800,000 Dead folks in Rwanda, The ill planned Welfare Reform Act, support of a disastrous Iraq War Resolution without reading the NIE, voting for lesser measures and without a single apology, approval of an Iran Resolution of volatile timing, saber rattling for AIPAC, Corporate donations up the yang-yang and then some, shady secretive transactions in reference to the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Library (all waiting to opened up like a GOP Pandora),

But we should also be asked to justify why Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton is fine and dandy.

.....and accept the fact that Hillary who couldn't find her voice till age 60, which ended up being Bill's voice......and who's 35 years of experience when written down, appears as thin as broth.

This is a candidate that I am supposed to be enthused about as my General Election Candidate?

A polarizing, devisive, calculating and triangulating individual starting out with 47% negative polling who doesn't believe in hope?

Sorry, but I don't think so.

PS. As far as I am concerned, she should be out of this race by now. If a Black man would have come in third in Iowa, his name would have been history already.

1. Obama has all that except for Bill - and he Oprah, Kerry and the Kennedys
Obama is running a good race - but to portray him as some underdog taking on the establishment is disingenuous.

27. You don't give a shit about it either....and it shows.....
evidenced by holding up Gavin as though he actually accomplished anything of note, except for his exceptionally bad timing right in the nick of time for 2004 General election....

where we watched 11 Marriage amendments passed throughout the nation...

which is what brought out "morals" voters, who voted in the majority for another Bush presidential reign that resulted in 2 supreme court RW judges appointments.

YOu are correct, Gavin is not my hero.

I realize your hang up with one Gospel singer.

I'll deal with that.

37. Wrong. Gavin has accomplished plenty of note.
Implementation of Care Not Cash began on July 1, 2004. As part of his Care Not Cash initiative, 5,000 more homeless people were given permanent shelter in the city. As of October 21, 2007, about 2,000 people have been placed into permanent housing with support.<4> Other programs initiated by Newsom to end chronic homelessness include the San Francisco Homeless Outreach Team (SF HOT), and Project Homeless Connect (PHC). SF HOT functions as a short-term intensive case management team, assisting the most disabled homeless individuals to access health, social and housing services. PHC consists of bimonthly events that bring together a host of public and private services at one location, making it easier for homeless individuals to connect with a number of services under one roof. Both of these programs have added to Mayor Newsom's success with regard to getting homeless people into permanent, supportive housing. In his 2004 State of the City Address, to highlight the issue of homelessness, Newsom declared that "homelessness has replaced the Golden Gate Bridge and the cable car as one of the city's most defining symbols."<29>
Newsom has focused city resources on impoverished districts in Bayview-Hunters Point on San Francisco's southeast side, often arriving there without notice to follow through on city programs.<6> On one occasion, Newsom took several Hunters Point children to Burger King and to a San Francisco 49ers game.<6> The Baysview-Hunters Point project includes over 8,500 housing and 350 acres of open space.<31> Since Newsom became mayor, the city has put nearly $500 million into construction of affordable housing that house nearly 20 percent of San Francisco's families.<31> Newsom also worked on plans for 6,000 new homes and apartments on Treasure Island, new high-rise apartments and condominiums on Rincon Hill, and has worked on rebuilding the Transbay Terminal.<31>
Newsom has worked to improve San Francisco public housing through public private partnership to provide more affordable housing.<3> Newsom helped secure $77 million to help some of San Francisco’s underperforming schools and worked to put more police officers in schools.<3> In February 2008, Newsom committed $30.6 million from San Francisco's budget reserves to help San Francisco Unified School District close a $40 million drop in state funding due to state budget deficits.<32>
Economic policy
During Newsom’s first term as mayor, tourism, air traffic, and hotel occupancy increased while unemployment decreased by 2.5%.<33><31> 57 new companies and 35 new biotech firms opened in San Francisco, including the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine Stem Cell Institute.<3><33> Newsom supported biotech and clean industry tax incentives to bring more businesses to San Francisco. In 2005, Newsom implemented the Working Families Tax Credit, providing the average San Francisco family with extra $300.<34> Newsom has made efforts to reach out to San Francisco businesses. In 2004, Newsom had a 100 in 100 campaign, meeting with 100 CEO's in 100 days to try to make San Francisco more business friendly.<35>
While the unemployment rate has decreased, San Francisco has 90,000 few jobs since 2000.<31> Rising costs of living, combined with the blue collar jobs leaving San Francisco, have made it harder for blue collar workers to live in San Francisco.<31> Newsom has worked to address these problems with affordable housing and has claimed that the new high tech companies will also bring some blue collar jobs to San Francisco.<31>
On October 27, 2004, during a strike by hotel workers on a dozen San Francisco hotels, Newsom joined UNITE HERE union members on a picket line in front of the Westin St. Francis Hotel. He vowed that the city would boycott the hotels by not sponsoring city events in any of them until the hotels agreed to a contract with workers.<36> The contract dispute was settled in September 2006.<37> Newsom's support of the workers angered some businesses who had been traditional Newsom backers.<4>
In order to help balance San Francisco's budget in 2004, Newsom supported Proposition J to increase sales taxes and Proposition K to increase business taxes. Both measures failed in 2004.<38> Newsom laid off hundreds of city workers and cut city services in 2004 to balance the city budget.<29>
Newsom spent 18 months trying to make San Francisco a city wide free Wi-Fi Zone, but negotiations with the Board of Supervisors and EarthLink ended when Earth Link pulled out of the talks.<31> Newsom said he would continue to work for universal Wi-Fi.<31> Newsom's efforts to build a cruise ship terminal and put up a waterfront YMCA also were not achieved.<31>
During Newsom's time as Mayor, the San Francisco 49ers caught Newsom by surprise when they announced they would be moving to Santa Clara. Newsom received some criticism for being too hands off in the discussions, a claim Newsom denies.<4>

Newsom's State of the City Address
Environment
Under Newsom, San Francisco joined the Kyoto Protocol. San Francisco’s Climate Action Plan is aimed at helping San Francisco meet its Kyoto Protocol targets. Newsom helped San Francisco implement green building standards and to improve open spaces. Newsom helped secure $8 million in federal and local funds to improve city streetscape.<3> Newsom's efforts have helped lead to the planting of over 17,500 new trees.<4>
Immigration
On April 23, 2007, Newsom again drew national attention when he announced at a community action held by the San Francisco Organizing Project that he would do everything he could to discourage federal authorities from conducting immigration raids. "Our action is to stand strong in opposition to these raids... to make sure that we are not contributing in any way, shape or form," Newsom said. "Even legal immigrants are fearful. This just sends a chill to a lot of people. There are a lot of cities that want these raids. That's where the federal government should be spending their time."<39> Newsom supported city identification cards for illegal immigrants in 2007 to allow them access to city services and to be able to set up bank accounts in the city.<10>
Health care
Early in Newsom's first term, he worked to extend the city-funded health insurance program, started under Mayor Brown, to young adults, a program that had been previously offered only to children. Newsom's more ambitious plan on healthcare began to take shape in 2007. In his budget proposal for fiscal year 2007-2008, Newsom announced his intention to provide universal health care for all city residents, based on long-time City Supervisor Tom Ammiano's plan. The care will be provided through the San Francisco Health Access Plan.<40><41>
Newsom’s Health Access Plan, known as Health San Francisco, shares the cost with workers and businesses using federal, state, and city funds and savings to provides healthcare insurance to all San Franciscans. The system plans to use more electronic referring to specialists, focusing on preventive care, and works to provide care to San Francisco’s 82,000 uninsured adults.<42> Newsom's proposal has prompted Oakland mayor Ron Dellums and San Mateo County's Board of Supervisors to look into possibilities for providing their own taxpayer-subsidized health care.<43><44> The Health Access Plan passed legal challenges. The implementation of the program will began in the near future.
Public safety
Newsom began his first term by appointed San Francisco's first female police chief, Heather Fong, and fire chief, Joanne Hayes-White. He later vetoed legislation mandating a police foot-patrol policy in favor of police discretion that was overturned by the Board of Supervisors.<4> In December 2005, Newsom went public with a video that was made by a police office, which depicted police officers making mock calls that were racist, sexist, and homophobic according to Newsom.<4> Newsom admitted that reforms aimed at changing the culture of the police department had gone slower than expected.<4> San Francisco has experienced an increase in homicides during Newsom’s tenure as Mayor, despite efforts by Newsom to lower them.<45><4> Rape, aggravated assault, and burglary have decreased.<33>
Mayor Newsom is a member of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition,<46> an organization formed in 2006 and co-chaired by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston mayor Thomas Menino. Newsom opposes capital punishment.<29>
Government reform and Muni
Newsom reduces political patronage in city government that had become more common during the Brown administration.<4> Many of Newsom's opponents on the Board of Supervisors credit him for reducing patronage in city government.<4> Newsom helped close San Francisco's budget deficit in 2004 by consolidating 6 city departments that reduced the city budget by $78 million.<3> He launched a 311 hotline that provides 24 hour live operator assistance to San Franciscans concerning city services.<3><4>
During Newsom's time as mayor, Muni’s on-time performance improved 5%.<33> In 2006, Newsom publicly stated he believed Muni was pocketing fares after Newsom had rode Muni and wasn't given a receipt on several occasions.<47> Newsom considered making Muni fare-free, but Newsom dropped the idea after a study he commissioned to investigate the idea showed it would not work.

Gavin has actually accomplished a great deal as mayor, and is considered one of the hot up and comers in the Democratic party. He may be considering a run for governor of California. Before you consider dissing Gavin again, just know that he has accomplished a great deal more in office than Obama ever has.

42. I'm not talking about what he did as a mayor outright.....As I work in San Francisco....
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 03:40 AM by FrenchieCat
and don't need to look it up on Wiki (and cut and paste the entire thing to make a point).....and he will be running for Governor when Arnold's term is through....which is a plan that I approve of, but

I am talking about his role in the 2004 election....in reference to the issue of Gay Marriage, which I still feel strongly to this day, he could have waited till after November of 2004. Period.

Same-sex marriage
Main article: San Francisco 2004 same-sex weddings

Newsom during the 2007 Gay Pride ParadeNewsom issued a directive to the San Francisco city-county clerk to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, claiming that the California Constitution's equal protection clause gave him authority to do so.<28> Approximately 4,000 same-sex couples were issued licenses in San Francisco From February 12 until March 11, 2004 (when the weddings were halted by the California Supreme Court), bringing international attention to the Mayor and the City. On August 12, 2004, the California Supreme Court voided those licenses, declaring Newsom had overstepped his authority.<29> Many prominent Democrats such as Dianne Feinstein criticized Newsom for the move, claiming it had contributed to John Kerry's defeat in the 2004 Presidential Election.<6><4> The move increased Newsom's popularity in San Francisco to the level where he faced no serious opposition to his reelection in 2007.<4><30>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_Newsom

The move was a good one, the timing stunk.

Which I'm sure sounds like those that believe that DOMA was a good move on Clinton's part.

24. DOMA? DADT? That's BILL Clinton.
You might think it's "fair" to say so, but deliberately confusing two people is either a lie, or stupidity.

You also don't know the first thing about either bill, especially the conditions under which they were proposed and signed.

26. So are you
As someone who has fought hard for GLBT issues for the vast majority of my life, your careless and quite frankly stupid use of the word homophobe to discredit and slander someone who has only expressed a different view is sickening.

You are your own worst enemy. If you diminish the word to a casual weapon, you do a great disservice to those who have actually died fighting for a cause you hurt more than help by opening your pie hole. When you learn to stop parsing for hidden meanings, you'll be one step closer to ending alot of your problems.

53. Exactly!
HRC hitched her wagon to BILL's star power in the 1970s, moving to Arkansas (before they were married) to the shock and dismay of her friends who thought she was throwing away her future. No, she was calculating even then and knew HE was going places. His Momma even had her pegged! Part of her much vaunted experience is as First LADY (Arkansas and US, 20 years in those roles). And had she not been First Lady, her bid for NY Senate seat (which has launched this POTUS bid) would have been laughable.

She's not the poster child for feminism or for women who have ever had to work their own way up the male chain of power and command, on their own name and merits.

She's also a fraud of a fighter who in her Senate career has more often than not gone along with Bush to get along and get ahead.

How much is Hillary's personal fortune?

Obama raised more money due to innovative fundraising techniques that he learned from Dean.

It's not even a comparision.

He certainly didn't have 97% name recognition before Iowa. Hillary did, though.

Not everyone is a political junkie like you and me and most of the people here. Just over a month ago I found my brother-in-law (24 yo) looking at Obama on the TV and he said 'who's this guy? He's interesting'. You think anyone besides political junkies and the Dem faithful even watch party conventions?

Obama has 97% name recognition (and ever-increasing funding) now because he's passing out a supposedly 'inevitable' candidate. Clinton had a huge lead over him in polls and so forth for the longest time, but she's proved unable to capitalize on it. It's kind of ridiculous of you to be pretending otherwise, as if the race just began the other day with the two of them even from the start.

10. Great post , but I disagree with your point that she underestimated her.....
opponent. She understood Obama's potential. That is why HRC spent all her cash trying to knock him out by super tuesday and did not have the ability or savvy to do so, she had poor judgement in choosing the most important people in her own career to this point, those that were to make that happen, and failed. And we want her to choose our next cabinet and supreme court??? No way.

16. If Hillary couldn't get the nom by Super Tuesday, she can't win against the GOP.
They may say Hillary is tough enough, but where is the proof? I don't see it.

She has only proved she is weak against an opponent who had half her support a couple months ago.

Especially if she doesn't win on Tuesday, this is Obama's nomination, and he deserves it, for he is truly the one that has FOUGHT for this nomination.

" ... don't you dare attack me and other supporters of Obama."

You think you're too special to criticize? Take your high-ass bullshit elsewhere.

"You don't have that right."

Now you're deciding what rights I have? If you can hate and rage here day after day, night after night, I can criticize anyone I can make a case against.

"That's what makes you less than what you think you are."

Arrogant self-pitiers ALWAYS think they can read minds. But you can't.

Go follow your tin-plated god to the Promised Land of smugness. Then you can all sit around telling each other how right you are.

29. Hillary's run is poisoned by her Republicanism, her DLC'ism, and Bill's penis . . .
The GOP worked for years to poison the Clinton name and reputation ---
not that the Clintons didn't give them a lot of help --
and I don't think that information is exactly dormant ---

PLUS, Hillary's own stand on Iraq isn't what the public is looking for -
and she's DLC ---

41. So cheering her on as the invitable candidate for one year prior to the
primary means the Press "hates" her?

After coming in 3rd in Iowa, maybe she should have been history....but no, the press followed her around more then they did John Edwards who had come in 2nd.

Is Hillary Inevitable?

Pundits have pretty well conceded the Democratic nomination to Hillary Clinton. In a basic sense, this is a reversal of recent history. Over the last few decades, it is the Republicans who have loyally nominated the heir apparent, the guy whose "turn" it was, even when--as when the GOP nominated Bob Dole in 1996--it was clear that he had little or no chance to win. The Democrats, on the other hand, have been willing to nominate candidates who started out as "second tier," if they like the way they perform in the early going. Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton are good examples. Now that we all know what a skillful politician Clinton is, it is hard to remember that when the Democrats nominated him in 1992, it was almost exactly the same as if the Republicans were to nominate Mike Huckabee next year.
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2007/09/018580.php

The Democratic New York senator has worked hard to get to this point, a position that has its advantages. A presumptive winner in the primaries commands campaign dollars and media attention (though the latter can be a mixed blessing). This necessarily weakens competitors, who are then forced to spend less time promoting themselves and more time trying to knock out the frontrunner (another mixed blessing).

Historically, the early leader usually bags the nomination, though there may be some stumbles along the way. That's why a string of candidates – both Bushes, Al Gore, Bob Dole, and Walter Mondale, to name a few – worked to create the perception of presumed nominee.

When Senator Clinton took the usually slow summer fundraising season and turned it into a record-setting clam rake, when she appeared on five Sunday talk shows in one morning last month, when even President Bush spoke of her as the one to beat – then she must have known she was wearing that invisible crown of inevitability.

Clinton outpaces Obama in fundraising for third quarter

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Hillary Clinton raised $27 million in the third quarter for her 2008 Democratic bid for the White House, a Clinton aide said Tuesday.

All but $5 million of Clinton's funds can be spent trying to win the Democratic presidential nomination in the primaries, the aide said.

More than 100,000 new donors contributed to the New York Democrat, the aide said.

Clinton outpaced Sen. Barack Obama over the last three months, a reversal of positions from the second quarter.

Hillary says she’ll be Democratic nominee by Feb 5th
December 13, 2007
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is anticipating that she will not have to wait long to become the Democratic presidential nominee, privately telling campaign donors in California that the race "is all going to be over by Feb. 5."

Though the focus of the 2008 presidential campaign is on Iowa and New Hampshire, the states with the earliest contests, Clinton suggested that California's influence might be larger than was commonly believed.

"You've got to realize that people in California will start voting absentee about the time Iowa and New Hampshire happen," the senator from New York said at a closed-door fundraising reception Tuesday evening. "In fact, more people will have voted absentee by the middle of January than will have voted in New Hampshire, Iowa and a lot of other places combined."

On Friday, California absentee ballots began going out to members of the military and others living abroad.

California's remaining absentee ballots will be sent out beginning Jan. 7, one day before the New Hampshire primary and four days after the Iowa precinct caucuses.

California holds its primary Feb. 5, along with 21 other states and American Samoa.

"California, Texas, New York, New Jersey — you've got way more than half the country," Clinton said at the fundraising event at a Sacramento restaurant. "And we're going to be ready, thanks to all of you. We're running a vigorous campaign here in California."

Voters in 22 states will vote after Feb. 5, as will those in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.

The fundraising reception was closed to the news media, but an audio recording of Clinton's speech was made available to the Los Angeles Times.

46. That means Hillary just got ahead of herself here
I was saying to my friends after the Iowa caucuses that I was so happy Barack won them. "Oh Hillary will win the rest of her campaigns, just you wait and see." was the response I got. They've been proven wrong.

She overspent in Iowa and possibly New Hampshire. She didn't anticipate in doing badly. She's clung onto the endorsements of her "supers" to appear that she's ahead. I really wish I could find a website that separates the pledged delegates and the supers to see how many she's won versus Barack's. My partner was asking how many pledged he had. I said I didn't know. I should get going on adding up the totals.

Hillary ran on the inevitability thing. I really didn't like her attitude with this campaign, thinking this was hers and the others should butt out. I'm willing to bet this is one of the reasons why people went for Barack instead of her in the early contests.

That whatever she says or anyone in her campaingns says, there is a scrutiny there that isn't present in the coverage of other candidates, then really, I don't know what to say. And believe me, I don't care for either Clinton or Obama; my candidates are out of the race now. But the Clinton hating in the press has gone on since Bill was president.

the media has always hated the Clintons and still hates them. watch "the hunting of the president". also, Welfare reform was necessary. it made welfare a 2nd chance, not a way of life. all the media says are that clintonS are "calculating" even tho all politicians are, they act like the clintons don't care about the people, UMM THEY DO CARE! they put people first, helping ordinary americans for almost 16 years.

So Obama's anti-establishment?

This is a woman's who's had to fight her entire life. Couldn't find her voice until 60?

But let me see, a candidate doesn't take a decisive, polarizing position on ANYTHING in his adult life, falters badly in practically any debate, and just starts making a few great speeches in his 40's is somebody you can get behind?

Sorry, I will back the experienced candidate licking a few battle wounds over a polished newbie anyday.
