Huckster's surprise comeback - what's the upside or downside for Dems?
I'm surprised that this flat earther is doing so well - with 8% counted in VA - he is (again) leading McLame by a few points.

He does have a folksy way about him, I guess that appeals to simple thinkers.

Underneath that is a zealot who wants to infuse his wacko fundamentalist morality into our constitution, our work, your home, and our government.

Still - he is a new force that nobody predicted would get this far.

He keeps fighting McLame - is that only a good thing as the pukes use more $$$ - or is there a downside that the Dems should pay attention to?

1. It's a good thing. We don't want to fight while their nominee is a done deal.
The longer their primary process is drawn out, the better.

It would be even better if our nominee is decided before theirs. It's not likely, but it could happen.

2. If it's McCain/Huckabee,

all the Southern states will go Republican.

Edited to add that will happen whether Hillary or Obama is the nominee.

3. As long as he doesn't actually get the nomination, it's a humorous diversion.
Otherwise, it's scarier than hell and I think I'm packing up and moving to France.

4. McCain has taken a 3,500 vote lead
Just under 40 percent reporting.

I think McCain will win VA.

5. It's nothing but upside
The longer he keeps McCain in the game, the better, as he weakens him considerably; especially it's drawn out, and shown that he's lukewarm to his base. I already suspect that Huck will be his choice for the VP anyhow, so his staying in, doesn't matter to me about him maybe getting the VP.

That ticket will be tough - back to the future "moderate" terra fightin' McCain, and the full blown conservative who also reads the Left Behind series.

On top of that, I want him to stay in and start attacking McCain's strength (or his GE plan) of being the arrogant foreign policy wonk.

7. I don't see how it can hurt the Dems
just shows how weak their nominee is

8. Just getting to hear that crazy James Dobson all over TV is great!
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 07:59 PM by Beaverhausen
and I think a vote for Huck is more a vote against McCain for a lot of repubs. I talked to my repub parents the other day and they basically said that. I couldn't get them to answer why they didn't like McCain though...

9. He is more conservative than McCain
and a populist (as much of a populist as an (R) can be) which chould attract indies.

As far as him against our candidates -- he does bring the Governorship (8? 10? something years) executive thing into the mix.

12. He is not more conservative than McCain. He's more pro-life and anti-gay, but
McCain is a fiscal conservative AND a social conservative (solid pro-life, pro-gun) AND a hawk--he just has some moderating positions on global warming, immigration, campaign finance. Hucky is only a Socon.

14. Pro-war. Thinks we have to stay because it's a "Holy war", and that
our troops can't come home until they can leave "with honor"--yes, he actually said that in a debate.

11. if a primary fight is good for Dems, does that apply to the GOP?
I dunno. The dems have never been an organized party. Unfortunately, that continues to this day.

The GOP was over-organized, at least for the past 20 yrs. This shows the last throes that the GOP is entering, and unlike, as it were, if I may, it being some cheneyesque statement of falsehood and spin, I think it is accurate. The GOP, the neocon, anti-worker, anti-environment, anti-fairness, and anti-idiotic war party is in intensive care, and there is no hope of a transplant or transfusion. Not enough war-mongering, greedy, vampire blood is stored in stock anyway.

Remember the real GOP. The party of Lincoln. The party that passed SALT 1&2. The EPA. Social Security fixes. VA funding. opening up China. Clean water act. Clean air act. Endangered Species Act. Hell, that was the GOP platform under Nixon. Of course, today, Nixon would have been tossed from the party, and traded for two Reagans, a John Bolton, and three effin asshole PNACer AIPAC clones to be named later. Today's progressives and liberals have more in common with Nixon of the 60s than some of our DLCers. sad to say, but true.

16. Love it.
But he needs to be winning since the Repug states are winner take all. He needs to do more than just annoy McCain.
