Guys, I only ask you this as one concerned Democrat toward another. Can you not even begin to imagine what will go down during that first eventful Presidential Debate? Here, let me give you a preview:

Debate Moderator: Senator McCain, how will you protect the United States from terrorists?

McCain: Considering all my decades of foreign policy experience, you've got some goddamn nerve asking me that, son.

Debate Moderator: My apologies Senator McCain.

McCain OK, but don't let it happen again or I'll slap you with one of my cheek pouches, ha ha ha-iha-iha.

Debate Moderator: Senator Obama, same question. How will you protect the United States from terrorists?

Obama: homina, homina, homina, uhhhm, wtf, duh, dunno, hmmm.........PRESENT?

1. Yeah bombing brown people is a real rational foreign policy.
McCain is like Bush on foreign policy. A dumbass who just happened to get shot down during a war.

2. Obama
will eviscerate McCain in debates. Seriously, it won't be pretty. McCain doesn't think well on his feet, has a weird sing-song annoying voice, and will look ancient next to the youthful Obama.

Hillary supporters don't give their candidate enough credit. She's an excellent debater (president of her college debating team) and, for Obama, having gone through 18-20 debates with her and holding his own will have prepared him well for debating McCain.

5. Ha ha FU! Obama has stated and I back him up that he will not hesitate to use force when necessary
But it shall be the last resort.

These aren't preemptive attacks by terrorists they are revenge killings. We have killed them by covert means for decades.

If we quit killing everybody "over their" they'll quit trying to kill us here. But, in our history the CIA has bloodied the name of the USA and now we are hated beyond words.

How would Clinton handle these questions?.?.?

Both you and McCain both voted for IWR.

Clinton: Well, er, um, er, um, everyone knew Saddam had WMD.

Both you and McCain both voted for Kyl/LIEbermann.

Clinton: Well, a, a, er, um, who knows Iran could have WMD.

Give me a break. I think they both would do well against McLameBrain.

21. Obama will manage very nicely against McCain, thank you.
McCain will look old, lumpy and tired standing next to him. Obama can nicely compliment McCain's *many decades* of service to his country and make him seem even older.

Obama has excellent foreign policy advisers, including Samantha Powers and Richard Clarke. I'm sure they'll prepare him more than adequately for any such questions.

I would note that the great and glorious Bill Clinton had much less foreign policy/national security experience than Obama when he ran in 1992. In fact, as the governor of a small Southern state with no federal experience of any kind, he had exactly none at all.

McCain has *no* detailed domestic policy positions except for more Bushian tax cuts. Any domestic policy questions will have McCain sputtering and mumbling.

Obama will clean his lumpy old clock.

24. I'm not sure I understand your point.
That is a "pro-Republican" question, and McCain will field it more aggressively than Obama or Clinton, hands down.

Obama is bluntly saying that we are doing a crappy job of addressing the homeland security issues that have already been identified, and that's a big piece of his agenda. I saw that and applauded. It's something that the Republicans can't touch because it's their president who is spending more money on offense than defense.

Someone said to me the other day that football is no longer about a good offense. Times have changed.

Now. Please explain... if Obama wins the nomination, what are YOU going to do with your question in a positive way? I mean, it's an IMPORTANT question... but isn't it more constructive to tell someone that his belt is unbuckled than to assume that he won't get it fixed before he gets to the podium and bemoan the consequences before they happen???

If you really believe that Obama is weak on the question of terrorism AND he wins the nomination, push the issue to his campaign staff. If enough of us who want to win the election, these holes will get plugged.

If people who see him winning decide to take their marbles and go home, then it's the same as wanting McCain.

We have to play the hand we have. Quit trying to fold it before the money's on the table.

26. McCain will have the power of the media on his side.
McCain will also have the power of dustups with Iran caused by the bush administration.

If the media had treated Hillary Clinton with respect and admiration all these past years, she would be way ahead now. But the media has treated her with sheer contempt, ridiculed her, villified her, and the people bought it. Republicans ate it up like candy, and now the Democrats show that they, too, like the sweet taste of hating Hillary.

The media is either for you, or they are not. But one thing for certain, they are for GOP power. Always keep that in mind as you watch them steering people in one direction or the other. DU is a tempest in a teapot. Most people are not politically informed. A lot of people voted for bush because they perceived him as a "good Christian." Thank the media for perpetuating that nonsense.

Watch for the stealth attacks on Barack as his popularity rises. Once he looks inevitable, you will soon see where the GOP wants to steer this country. Be prepared for more of Tom DeLay's ugly mug.

47. I don't understand..
...the fear of John McCain. Half his own party can't stand him, he has stabbed them in the back repeatedly. He is a terrible debater, an awful orater, and he can't even put away a complete nutjob like Huckaby even AFTER being declared the de facto candidate by the MSM.

The Cookie Monster could be put out there as the Democratic nominee, and he would have a 50% shot against McCain, who failed utterly in his last bid and stands where he does now because everyone else the Repubs put up this year was even more utterly repulsive to even Republicans. If I was a Republican I would have put a gun to my head when I saw the respective options put in front of me.

McCain will lose to anyone with a pulse. Certainly to Obama, who can talk circles around him, and probably to Hillary, because, well, she's not a complete whackjob like McCain.

Stop raising the specter of the opposition as some reason to vote for your candidate. That is a patently Bush/Rove tactic which the Repubs clearly are still counting on.

59. They really are, but that's understandable. I watched some of his debate and speech style
and the old fart has his shit together this time like there is no tomorrow. People here say he's too old, he can't speak, and all that. Well they haven't seen the latest issue of McCain that I've seen. Even the way he humiliated Romney and then rubbed salt into the wound by chuckling at him to his face should be a wake-up call to anyone on our side that this will not be any cake walk with McCain.

Too old? MSM will have him pegged as the grizzled old warrior. Obama will look like Bambi compared to McCain when it comes to foreign experience, so Barack will have to figure out ways to overcome that perception somehow.

Lousy speaker? Not nearly as lousy as what the people here on our forum claim. McCain isn't as smooth as Obama, but when he's not being nasty, he's down to earth as it gets, and his sheep suck it right up.

Ageism won't help Obama. People won't look at is as young vs. old but experience vs. inexperience. McCain is eager to fight Obama based on his speech tonight in which he seemed to mock Obama. McCain's strength is Obama's weakness. It might be Obama's kryptonite.

61. You said it better than I could, jackson
but I've often said that the biggest mistake anyone can make is to underestimate McCain because of his age. What people don't realize is that many voters will find comfort in his age...plus everything you already pointed out.

79. Thank You. Something else you should consider.
The republicans are banking on the race being War Hero vs. Black Man. Little do they know that the race will be War Hero vs. American Hero. Not everyone can identify with war. But all can identify with America.

To a bright future with Obama. :toast:

69. McCain is an enthusiastic and unabashed warmonger,
who has said the troops could be in Iraq for over a hundred years and he doesn't care. He would love nothing better than to go into Iran. People aren't gonna be too thrilled about that, frankly.

And Obama has a greater chance of beating him than Hillary does. If Hillary is the nominee, there's a large base that will come out just to vote against her. And frankly, she isn't much better when it comes to the warmongering. That's been her problem lately, she's underestimated the strength and breadth of those against the war and against the current Iraq policy, and the depth of their anger.

Bomb bomb bomb, bomb Iran.

Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb the whole middle-east for the next one hundred years...

I have zero worries about Obama going up against a 71 year old rethug with a nasty temper.

As soon as McCain lays out his neocon fantasies about conquering the arab world and turning it into nirvana, Americans will be running for the exits!

Simply put, McCain = 4 more years of Bush.

The vast majority of Americans will never vote for that!

78. Oh, yes, I do.
In fact, MSNBC had a screen shot right after Obama's monster rally (17-18K, but I'm bragging) side by side with the next speech on deck with a shot of McCain's anemic "rally" but looked like a press conference in a small room.

I wish a wizard here would find, work their magic, and post it so I can put it in my sig line. It was that much of a contrast.

Obama argued his case against McCain in his speech tonight, and he brought it. And then some. Oh, yes, I can't wait for him to tell Grandpa Crazy he has lost his mind on Iraq. Yes indeed, I'm looking forward to that.

Yes, he can.

Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 11:24 PM by goodgd_yall
I'm not an Obama supporter, but I think Obama could handle McCain pretty well. I am a bit worried about the "spin machine" of the media and the possibility of a dirty tricks operation. But, in a debate, I think Obama could win quite handily.

That goes for Hillary, too. She'd beat McClain into the ground.

106. Don't complain. A bunch of Obama supporters came here in defense of their man
and not a single one of them got all bent out of shape. There were quite a few good suggestions, too, which is good because we're gonna have to be prepared for this guy. It won't be as easy as what so many people think. We can beat him, but it's going to be a heck of a battle. In case anyone forgets, we're still at war, and that plays right into the hands of a hawk like McCain.

It's not always about the moment, my friend :)
