Clinton wins and puts her economic recovery plan in place...
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 10:12 PM by OzarkDem
How long will it take to turn the economy around?

Her short term, quick turnaround plan...

$40 billion in (temporary) tax rebates for middle income and working families
$30 billion for housing crisis w/ 90 day moratorium on foreclosures; 5 yr freeze on interest rates on subprime mortgages
$25 billion in immediate energy assistance
$5 billion to jumpstart job growth in energy efficiency and alternative energy businesses
$10 billion to extend and broaden unemployment insurance

Sounds a lot like the one that her husband used so successfully to jump-start the economy after Bush I.

2. Oh, another GOP talking point
Actually, cutting taxes on the wealthiest Americans and corporations will pay some of it.

The beauty of this plan and similar ones in her husband's administration, were that they're geared towards fast economic stimulus. Boosting jobs and spending actually puts more tax money back into the sytem and the program mostly pays for itself.

23. Huh!?
So you're saying that Hillary is going to both spend approx. 100 billion and cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans and corporations at the same time, and somehow this is going to ease our debt load? Umm, that is pure, unadulterated Bush economics, you know, the kind that got us into this 9 trillion dollar hole. How do you think more of the same will get us out of it?

4. Actually, Bill had to cut his plan back a lot.
He ended up with something well short of what he wanted - and sacrificed several first-term members of the House of Reps to get it.

5. True - but unlike Obama he asked for a lot and only gave back little to get it through Congress -
If Obama wins you can kiss that "Medicare option for everyone" good by as Obama leaves that on the floor so as to get GOP votes and love.

8. No, I think he gave up a lot.
Very early in his term, he was in a life-or-death struggle.

11. Dems controlled Congress then
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 10:27 PM by OzarkDem
if he had, it wouldn't have worked. He just knew how to work Congress to get what he wanted.

Keep in mind, the first two years of Clintons first term, Dems were in control of Congress.

17. Right, but the Reps gave him a real fight and he backed down a lot.
He had to use the vote of a first-term Representative from a Republican area of Pennsylvania; she was defeated in her reelection because of that vote.

31. One of my greatest memories
is of working as a volunteer when Clinton came to Cleveland to announce his economic reform package. (He loves Cleveland and came here for a lot of events).

I'd already read the plan and knew it was a good one, but so many in the news media, and some Dems too, were pooh-poohing it. The MSM was harping on it so bad, everyone was afraid to praise it.

I thought he needed a good send off when he announced it. I was assigned to work behind the video camera riser in the back of the hotel ballroom, to keep people from climbing on during the speech and making the cameras wobble. All the print guys from Time, Newsweek, etc. were sitting there. As Clinton gave his speech and made key points about the plan, he would get lukewarm applause. So I began clapping and cheering at the applause lines. No one could see me because I was behind the riser (except the newspaper guys who made a smart ass remark - "how much are they paying you to do that?"). I kept cheering and the crowd caught on and started applauding louder. When Clinton got to the good parts of the plan, I gave a couple of Ozark style whoops. After that it was standing O's.

Just my little story about how I helped Bill sell his first economic plan.

28. and that will make a quick turnaround even more likely
Dems in Congress are desperate to help their states and districts, there may not be a lot of quibbling over an economic plan.

the job growth will begin with infrastructue and (check Hillary's plan) investment in "green collar jobs", underwriting startups for businesses in alternative energy and improving energy efficiency.

14. I can't speak for Obama
but I can say that Clinton took the time to put together a very good, very detailed plan for economic recovery. She wouldn't have done that if she didn't plan to push it through.

Dems would support it in Congress and with a Dem in the WH, the GOP'ers couldn't slow it down.

16. Right. H=however it turns out they need to share ideas
They're going to have to work together if the Democratic party is to take the White House, and they both have great points. And whomever Edwards endorses is going to have to toe the line on aid to the poor.

I see this as one giant win for the majority of Americans.

24. He's a genius at it
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 10:56 PM by OzarkDem
I would love to see what he and Hillary could bring about this time. He was already moving the US economy forward investing in high tech manufacturing, etc. The GOP cut back a lot of it before he had a chance to get it rolling, but it would be easy to pick up again.

I'd much rather see leaders in office who have been through this before and have done it well, no mistakes or missteps. They already know what works and what doesn't. And they truly enjoy getting into these projects and making them happen.
