With Obama as our nominee and strong Virginia support (Webb, Kaine, Mark Warner, etc..) it looks like Virginia might flip Blue. Obama, himself, got more votes than all the Republicans combined.

Dean must be happy today.

Demoralized GOP base (McCain hate) plus an energized Democratic base and Mark Warner on the Senate line makes it possible.

6. I thought they had a real shot at it in 04, they got it in 06, and they'll get it in 08.
The real question is, will they get Missouri as well?

11. I thought the same thing--people told me I was crazy.
I felt so, so justified when the first exit poll showed Virginia with Kerry up by 1. Maybe it's ego, but that's one of the reasons I'm perpetually suspicious of certain states' performance in that election, since Virginia ended up Bush by 17.

I think we can get MO this year too. They elected McCaskill, and we're supposed to have good odds on the statehouse, too.

7. I've been saying for years that VA is winnable.
People forget that states aren't static. People move, populations change, particularly along the coast. More and more people are moving into the coastal regions, and changing the local culture. Virginia isn't some backwater anymore.

10. not only Dean's...
but mine, and every Democratic long-suffering voters that waited for this day to REMOVE this mangy little chimp OUT of the WHITE HOUSE, and then signed a new executive agreeing to the UN treaty, which EFFECTIVELY sends the entire maladministration to the Hague, to the World Criminal Courts, and their anticipated LONG prison term. They may never see the United States again.

When it shall happen,

WE WILL FUCKING SCREAM!

17. Blue for a little while, anyway
I remember when I first took over as head of the Dem party in my somewhat conservative suburban town. I was thrilled to go through the poll books and find so many D voters in my area. As I called around to get acquainted with them I was so surprised to hear one after the other tell me "Oh I'm a Republican. I voted in that last Dem primary because there was this judicial election and we voted for ABC candidate to keep XYZ Dem candidate from winning the primary so the Republican judge could win in the GE."

I was shocked at how rampant this practice was, in our area mostly in the judicial races or county seats. I must say, I never had much luck converting any of these folks to become real Democrats.

23. There was a lot of that going on in the VA primary yesterday -
- I know of two republicans at my work who voted in the Democratic primary. One voted for Hillary because he thought McCain could beat her. The other voted for Obama because she didn't want Hillary to have a chance at the nomination. Both will vote republican in the general election. I just couldn't believe it! :banghead:

25. A good point, but...
You could take away the 8% of Obama's vote that was Republicans and he would still have way outpolled all the GOP candidates. And meantime, I do know a good few republicans that are voting for him because they actually like what he says and how he says it.

The idea of having a strong presidential candidate, that will actually bring many more people to the party, is a GOOD THING!

22. Virginia has been trending blue for years now
I think it will be a "light blue" in the general, no matter who is the candidate. It really depends on the turnouts in Northern vs Southern VA...they're wildly different.
