All Hat, No Cattle....

If Hillary's trying to make her last stand at the Alamo, she needs to get a speechwriter who knows something about Texas...

it's BIG HAT, NO CATTLE , I'm really starting to feel sorry for her...I hope she doesn't implode when she loses like B. Spears...

1. She is right
http://www.allhatnocattle.net/what_does_it_mean.htm

Texans have a phrase "All hat and no cattle." This phrase applies to pretend cowboys that dress and talk the part, pretending to be what they aren't.

7. Just because it's on the internets
Doesn't mean it true, check out the urban dictionary...

Or you could have listened to the radio this morning, two different stations were making fun of her.

Oh yeah, you don't get the 105.3 I do as your not in Dallas.

16. LOL. Ever Hear of "Morning Guy-itus"?
It's a disease suffered by radio people when they go with what they think is true - or true enough - to pass for fact.

PS - How many of your Dallas morning radio DJs are actually *from* and grew up *in* Texas?

4. Maybe YOU should learn the saying, eh"
Ann Richards used the term, as did Molly Ivins.

The odds are BOTH terms are correct, but your OP's thesis is mistaken.

5. I can't see pissing on her for that.
The "All Hat..." version is a lot more common on the web, including a well-known progressive website, www.allhatnocattle.net so you can conclude either that she's not plugged into Texas, or she IS very plugged in to the web.

And I'm not a Hill backer, BTW. I just don't hate her, and I hope we don't gratuitously tear all our potential candidates into little pieces before November.

6. I've always heard it as All Hat, No Cattle
But I've never claimed to be an expert on authentic frontier gibberish. I do know that John Wesley Hardin once shot a man for snoring too loud.

17. Hillary: "I blah blah blah ... My plan blah blah blah ... My husband blah blah blah."
She's a boring speaker who too often tries to TELL you why you have to support her.

8. What buffaloed me was, she said "We need less hat and more cattle."
This is a really pathetic attempt to make a metaphor mean something it can't be made to mean.

10. To be fair
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 11:17 AM by Lone_Star_Dem
That is exactly the phrase Ann Richards used to described Bush when she was running against him for governor.

I think the reason some people here are objecting to Hillary saying something similar is because she's not a Texan. It's easy to accidentally make people feel as if you're speaking down to them rather than with them. It would probably be better if she (or her speech writers as the case would be) didn't attempt to use the lingo and just stuck to the issues.

13. I just thought it was so ironic when she said that.
After all she's the one behind in states, delegates, popular vote, etc.

15. I lived in Texas for four years.
Always heard "All hat, no cattle." NEVER ONCE heard "Big hat..."

Is it a really OLD saying, that has changed over the years, or something? God knows it wouldn't be the first thing Texans say that confused the heck out of me...
