Question for those who survived the last Primary War
Do you get over it?

Maybe this is silly but I have people on Ignore that I used to admire very much until I felt they went over the bounds of decency in attacking my candidate. I lost total respect and trust for them and experienced a deep sense of disappointment. Once my good computer died (I'm on dial-up with an old 200 MHz computer now) and it takes 3-4 minutes to place someone on Ignore I quit putting them on Ignore and just try my best to not click on their threads.

There are many that oppose my candidate who still manage to be engaging and and honest in criticizing my candidate. I respect those opponents.

The question is: Do you eventually come back to being able to trust and engage with people who have been horrible in the Primary Wars?

1. yeah it will eventually pass
as democrats we usually re-unite right after we blow an election that should be "in the bag"
my guess is that as soon as we blow it and mccain is sworn in we'll gather together and re-committ
to all the things we hold dear....we'll stay united till 2011 and then shoot ourselves in the foot again

2. It wasn't near this bad 4 years ago.
We had a rule against trashing another Democratic candidate. I know I got spanked a few times for trashing Lieberman back the.

We don't have that rule now.

4. Things were not nearly this close this far along last time.
Pre-Iowa 2004 was worse than pre-Iowa 2008, by far. Post-Iowa 2004 was much more civil, but the race was basically over after New Hampshire. Had Obama won New Hampshire, it would probably ended it too. The race is still quite tight, even if Obama is pulling away now. Things will get back to being civil once we have a nominee.

3. Yes
in fact, it came rather quickly as everyone started working to elect Kerry.

Since I only felt lukewarm about Kerry I didn't really have the passion I do this year. This year though I have also put several people on ignore but only the ones I saw post threads for what seemed the sole purpose of was baiting, mocking or ridiculing. What was surprising to me was that a couple of them were people I once had a great deal of respect for. So that was disppointing to me.

6. It'll be Republican bashing as usual before long.
Personally, I'm still wondering where all of the Lieberman supporters went.

Anyone that attacked him was promptly labeled antisemitic.

Nothing changes really.

If you support Obama you are a sexist homophobe cultist.
If you support Clinton you are racist corporatist.

It will all pass. People dysfunctional enough to turn on their own will move on
to another one of their pet hobbies.

7. It's worse this year
I don't think I had anybody on ignore last time. This time I had a couple but they're gone now.

The primary season was a whole lot shorter to so the animosity didn't build up the way it is now. I hope we can all come together behind whoever wins, but from reading some of the posts I suspect there will be several who won't let it go and will end up in the graveyard.

8. It didn't last this long
There were a few lingering "Skull & Bones" spammers against Kerry that eventually sucked granite.

It's funny.... the most "infamous" thread I recall on DU years ago was a "Hate Hillary" thread. Go figure. :eyes: It resulted in a few people suckin' granite. I look back at that thread and consider it to be tame compared to the shit I'm reading now.

When the day comes that you can call another DUer a "racist old fuck"... and express joy in the fact that the "racist old fuck" won't be around much longer and NOT be sucking granite?
:wtf:

Will it be the same? Doubtful. I've made my decision. I'll miss the friends I've made here but DU is not a healthy environment for me.

9. Yes, the vitriol and nastiness is largely a product of people with
very little experience in primary politics. Supporters of candidates who lose in the primary are frequently the most ardent politicos around. They are true believers and it takes some time to get over, but in the end most people come around and get on board with the Dem nominee.

The same thing happened with Dean/Kerry et al. in the last primary. I was a Dean supporter. BLM was a Kerry supporter. We went after each other with a viciousness that rivals anything going on now. Today,BLM is one of my best friends on DU.

10. Thanks to all that responded.
Du is one of my addictions, and I feel a sense of relief in knowing that we will come together again. I still feel silly asking for the reassurance, but I also feel a lot better
