Obama's accomplishments in his 11 years in elective office
What has Barack Obama ever accomplished?

"Some Say" that those who support Obama do so without a clue, and do so because of a "Svengali" effect his has on his "cult".

I say that it is unfortunate, in this age of the Internet, that folks aren’t able to inform themselves, yet are able to post on a Political blog to have a say.

I have done my research on Sen. Obama, and so have many of the others who support him. Maybe that is why he is attracting the most educated progressives in this nation; maybe it is because they do their homework, and do not rely on name recognition to determine whom to vote for.

So to inform you, please note the following articles that sum up some of what Barack has “done” in his last 11 years in public office. Considering that Obama may be the Democratic Nominee, I believe that it is important for you, as a public voice, to be informed:

His bold legislative work on the Illinois Death Penalty, and how he made a difference between life and death:
http://www.icadp.org/page236.html
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/11/12/obama.death.penalty.ap/

His sponsorship of a bill that brought health insurance to 150,000, including 70,000 uninsured Children, again, during his time serving in the Illinois Statehouse:
http://factcheck.barackobama.com/factcheck/2007/12/14/fact_check_on_milbanks_claim_t.php
http://mediamatters.org/items/200712170003

His work on both the Immigration bill during his time in the US senate and his sponsorship of Ethics legislation (something he did both while in the State House, and in the Senate) that called for some of the most impactful reform regarding lobbyists since Watergate (as he likes to term it):
http://factcheck.barackobama.com/factcheck/2007/12/14/fact_check_on_milbanks_claim_t.php
http://feingold.senate.gov/~feingold/releases/07/01/20070108.html

Here’s a chart of many of his accomplishments during his 8 years in the Illinois state house -

and his sponsored and co sponsored Bills in the U.S. Senate.......which include worthwhile bills dealing with a wide range of issues, from Election reform bills to the Cooperative Proliferation Detection reduction Act (w/t Sen. Lugar) to Internet database transparency Act.
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/271/
http://www.america.gov/st/washfile-english/2005/November/20051101170118adynned0.8910791.html
http://obama.senate.gov/press/060908-senate_passes_c/

http://thomas.loc.gov/ (Select Obama’s name from the Senator drop down)

This does not lists all of his accomplishments, nor does it deals with his accomplishments prior to entering elected office.

Bottomline, it is Hillary’s accomplishments since her Senate tenure that are not clear. She’s been there longer than Barack, and still has done underwhelming little compared to Obama’s accomplishments in less years.

In addition, if the way Hillary has ran her campaign, without a Plan B, is any indication of how she will run our White House, I say, I’ll pass. Obama has shown that he can produce results under enormous odds (see his campaign and what it accomplished), and that in itself speaks more to who will truly be “ready from day one”.

32. Welcome!
It is just amazing how Clinton supporters like to lie about Obama not having accomplished anything, while they barely can find anything beyond NAFTA, CHINA Trade, Bankruptcy Reform, Welfare Reform, and voting for all Wars on the Clinton side of the Ledger (sure her work at the Children's Defense Fund for less than a year out of college gets big play).

2. ALL Obama supporters know his accomplishments because we.. umm.. what is it again, oh yeah.. READ &
LISTEN. However, no matter how craftily you lay it out and how easy you make it for people to comprehend, the Hillary supporters so filled with piss and vinegar, will continue to scream EMPTY SUIT RHETORIC from the rafters. At some point, you have to feel sorry for them and understand that they're just part of that "demographic". They really can't help it. Good job, Frenchie. :applause:

3. Anyone who plays the "accomplishment" game has not
thought it through. HRC has done, ahem , what, as an elected official to push forwards a truly liberal agenda? HRC is there because she's linked to big dog period. Would she have risen this high on her own? She's very bright, and perhaps. But that's a meaningless argument. Obama is self made. HRC is not according to lots of people I talk to, and therein lies the rub, IMHO.

25. You are Welcome......
and let's not forget what he did before he ever reached elective office.

Vote of Confidence
A huge black turnout in November 1992 altered Chicago's electoral landscape—and raised a new political star: a 31-year-old lawyer named Barack Obama.

In the final, climactic buildup to November's general election, with George Bush gaining ground on Bill Clinton in Illinois and the once-unstoppable campaign of senatorial candidate Carol Moseley Braun embroiled in allegations about her mother's Medicare liability, one of the most important local stories managed to go virtually unreported: The number of new voter registrations before the election hit an all-time high. And the majority of those new voters were black. More than 150,000 new African-American voters were added to the city's rolls. In fact, for the first time in Chicago's history-including the heyday of Harold Washington-voter registrations in the 19 predominantly black wards outnumbered those in the city's 19 predominantly white ethnic wards, 676,000 to 526,000.

None of this, of course, was accidental. The most effective minority voter registration drive in memory was the result of careful handiwork by Project Vote!, the local chapter of a not-for-profit national organization.

"It was the most efficient campaign I have seen in my 20 years in politics," says Sam Burrell, alderman of the West Side's 29th Ward and a veteran of many registration drives.

At the head of this effort was a little-known 31-year-old African-American lawyer, community organizer, and writer: Barack Obama.

To understand the full implications of Obama's effort, you first need to understand how voter registration often has worked in Chicago. The Regular Democratic Party spearheaded most drives, doing so using one primary motivator: money. The party would offer bounties to registrars for every new voter they signed up (typically a dollar per registration).

The campaigns did produce new voters. "But bounty systems don't really promote participation," says David Orr, the Cook County clerk, whose office is responsible for voter registration efforts in the Cook County suburbs. "When the money dries up, the voters drop out." Nor did the Democratic Party always vigorously push registration among minorities, Orr says. "It's not that they discouraged it. They just never worked hard to ensure it would happen."

Obama's Community Roots per the Nation

13,000 a year, plus $2,000 for a car--a beat-up blue Honda Civic, which Obama drove for the next three years organizing more than twenty congregations to change their neighborhoods.
http://www.thenation.com/doc/20070416/moberg

Project Vote is the voter-mobilization arm of ACORN. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose professed purpose is to carry out "non-partisan" voter registration drives; to counsel voters on their rights; and to litigate on behalf of voting rights -- focusing on the rights of the poor and the "disenfranchised."

Project Vote’s major program areas include the following:

Voter Participation Program: “, Project Vote has helped more than 4 million Americans in low-income and minority neighborhoods register to vote, including 1.1 million in 2003-04. In the same period, Project Vote reached more than 2.3 million low-income and minority voters to educate them about the importance of voting. Our methodology is based on face-to-face contact between voters and trusted community messengers, generally a representative of a local community organization.”

Election Administration Program: “ encompasses every aspect of election implementation, from voter registration application design to voting booth placement to vote counting and everything in between. Working in neighborhoods nationwide, Project Vote documents voting problems and works closely with elections officials, secretaries of state, and state legislators to enact proactive, pragmatic solutions. A central component of our work is the inclusion of low-income and minority voters through the involvement of our community partners.”

NVRA Implementation Project: “ partnership between Project Vote, ACORN and Demos aims to improve voter registration services at public assistance agencies. Section 7 of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 requires states to offer voter registration to public assistance clients upon application, recertification or renewal, and change of addresses. The Project ... offers technical assistance.” The National Voting Rights Institute and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law have recently become co-administrators of this initiative.

The stated purpose of Project Vote is to work within the system, using conventional voter mobilization drives and litigation to secure the rights of minority and low-income voters under the U.S. Constitution. However, the organization's actions indicate that its true agenda is to overwhelm, paralyze, and discredit the voting system through fraud, protests, propaganda and vexatious litigation. In this respect, Project Vote is following the so-called "crisis strategy" or Cloward-Piven Strategy pioneered during the Sixties by Columbia University political scientists Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven.
http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/groupProfile.asp?grpid=6966

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, is the nation's oldest and largest grassroots organization of low and moderate income people with over 200,000 members in over 90 cities. For 35 years, ACORN members have been organizing in their neighborhoods across the country around local issues such as affordable housing, safety, education, improved city services, and have taken the lead nationally on issues of affordable housing, tenant organizing, fighting banking and insurance discrimination, organizing workfare workers, and winning jobs and living wages.

Over the last decade, ACORN chapters have been involved in over fifteen living wage campaigns in our own cities, leading coalitions that have won living wage or minimum wage ordinances in St. Louis, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Boston, Oakland, Denver, Chicago, Cook County, New Orleans, Detroit, New York City, Long Island, Sacramento and San Francisco.

In addition, we have led coalitions to win statewide minimum wage increases in five states - including the huge 71% ballot victory in Florida in November 2004 - which delivered a raise to an estimated 850,000 workers. ACORN is following up that exciting victory by promoting a National Campaign to Raise the Minimum Wage through states and cities. This campaign includes cutting edge efforts to win citywide minimum wage increases - as well as ambitious statewide minimum wage ballot initiatives in the battleground states of OH, MO, AZ and CO for November 2006.

In 1998, ACORN established the Living Wage Resource Center to track the living wage movement and provide materials and strategies to living wage organizers all over the country.

They can't list Hillary's accomplishment clearly, and so instead, they attempt to believe that Obama is just like Hillary in this respect.

35 years and not much to show for it.....does not make one ready from day one.

9. Nice Post! - Obama folks - don't rest on Laurels!
fabulous post!

Good to see substantive pro-Obama threads and thoughtful examinations of Hillary's record starting to outnumber the flames.

Big-O supporters - don't get cocky after last night though - TEXAS is now the key to the whole race. If Obama can pull off an upset there it will mean the nomination. Worse - if Hillary wins it will be played as a "huge comeback" and will appear to be all "Even Steven". BE PARANOID AND HELP THE CAMPAIGN NOW!

Good news - Texas is an open primary.
Bad news - Clinton "brand" still incredibly strong.

I speak spanish and have been calling Latinos in Texas for the Obama campaign for past 4 nights!
even if you don't speak spanish - Calling people in Texas is one of THE BEST things you can do.

The calling is actually alot of fun - more so than you would think. You get a mix of responses, but alot of positive people who really want to hear what you have to say -- and think about it.

PLEASE go over to the website, and see what you can do TONIGHT. Time is very short - and we are still behind there!

40. Great character references for OBama in that Nation's article! Thanks!
Obama worked as an organizer at a time when Harold Washington's election as mayor stirred his hopes and dreams, as well as those of blacks and progressives in the city. Interviews with people who worked with him during that time elicited few complaints--virtually everyone described him in glowing terms, including dedicated, hard-working, dependable, intelligent, inspiring, a good listener, confident but self-effacing.

They expressed admiration for him as an organizer who trained strong community leaders while keeping himself in the background and as a strategist who could turn general problems into specific, winnable issues.

Loretta Augustine-Herron, a member of the DCP board that hired him, remembers him as someone who always followed the high road. "You've got to do it right," she recalls him insisting. "Be open with the issues. Include the community instead of going behind the community's back--and he would include people we didn't like sometimes. You've got to bring people together. If you exclude people, you're only weakening yourself. If you meet behind doors and make decisions for them, they'll never take ownership of the issue."

Obama worked in the organizing tradition of Saul Alinsky, who made Chicago the birthplace of modern community organizing, as translated through the Gamaliel Foundation, one of several networks of faith-based organizing. Often by confronting officials with insistent citizens--rather than exploiting personal connections, as traditional black Democrats proposed--Obama and DCP protected community interests regarding landfills and helped win employment training services, playgrounds, after-school programs, school reforms and other public amenities.

14. Oops...looks like your "homework" is INCOMPLETE...
http://www.blackagendareport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=463&Itemid=34

BTW- I'm a professional educator. Your tone is a bit condescending.

Obama projects himself as the "peace" candidate and the "anti-war" candidate. Apparently he doesn't think impeachment of the war criminals that occupy our White House is "warranted"... WOW!!! I wonder what it WOULD take for Mr. Obama to honor his oath of office and proceed as he is LEGALLY bound to do so as a serving, active US Senator? Never mind. The "educated progressives" in this nation already know the answer.

I don't have a dog in this fight. I haven't decided WHO I'm voting for. One thing IS clear...you are being disingenuous about Obama. That's not cool.

Why didn't you post THIS from the mediamatters.org link that you provided?

<snip>
On the other hand, the achievements Obama has to tout are thin. "I've done more than any candidate in this race to actually take on lobbyists, and I've won," he boasts. Well, yes, he championed ethics reforms in the Senate but left much of the heavy lifting to others while he campaigned.

"I expanded health care in Illinois by bringing Democrats and Republicans together, by taking on the insurance industry," he asserts. Actually, his signature legislation as a state senator, the Health Care Justice Act, merely set up a panel to craft a plan.

Obama also sounds a bit green when he vows that "I will finish the fight against al-Qaeda" -- a battle nobody expects will wrap up in the next four years.
<snip>

You see? We educated progressives DO OUR HOMEWORK by actually READING links provided to us in the OP.

You love Barack. Wonderful. Lovely. I guess I'm just not there yet. There's too much damaging info out there to suit this progressive. You might want to take an objective look instead of continually berating those that don't agree with your assessments and/or assertions. It's all out there. Don't fret. There's plenty of time to complete that homework assignment. It just requires a little critical thinking and an OBJECTIVE point of view.

Have a good one.

16. Or maybe yours is
"And Obama learned a valuable lesson from his rookie mistake. The next year he helped shepherd through the Senate a sweeping ethics measure displaying none of the naiveté of before.

This was a significant achievement. Although the measure passed overwhelmingly, Democratic leaders pressured him to water down the legislation to protect some of their fundraising scams.

``Obama has not been the most popular person in our caucus,'' a top Democrat told the New York Times. He resisted the pressure and won."
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=washingtonstory&sid=agE8U8f5Vn0o

Obama had several health care proposals pass, including expanded SCHIP, prescription drugs for seniors, hospital report card, and others.

He has a better record than Clinton.

Gov. Ryan did not make changes versus Legislation....Obama did.

Should Obama been the only one to have raised the issue of social injustice? Is that what you are implying?

What did Hillary ever do in reference to injustice in reference to the Death Penalty? Please do tell!

I mean, she's been "at it" for 35 years!

52. Uhr....because he states......
While the evidence tells me that the death penalty does little to deter crime, I believe there are some crimes--mass murder, the rape and murder of a child--so heinous that the community is justified in expressing the full measure of its outrage by meting out the ultimate punishment. On the other hand, the way capital cases were tried in Illinois at the time was so rife with error, questionable police tactics, racial bias, and shoddy lawyering, that 13 death row inmates had been exonerated.

What is Hillary's stance on the issue? Do you know?

Clinton has been a longtime advocate of the death penalty. Clinton cosponsored the Innocence Protection Act of 2003 which became law in 2004 as part of the Justice for All Act. The bill provides funding for post-conviction DNA testing and establishes a DNA testing process for individuals sentenced to the death penalty under federal law. As first lady, she lobbied for President Clinton's crime bill, which expanded the list of crimes subject to the federal death penalty.

55. Fabulous
Thank you for putting this information together.

Funny how people will repeatedly goad you for a reply when they think they've gotcha but when proven wrong are suddenly silent.

Good job

56. Ooh....another one for Barack!
Global Poverty Act of 2007, passed out of committee just yesterday--

Obama, Hagel, Cantwell, Smith Hail Committee Passage of the Global Poverty Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Barack Obama (D-IL), Chuck Hagel (R-NE), and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Congressman Adam Smith (D-WA) today hailed the Senate Foreign Relations Committee's passage of the Global Poverty Act (S.2433), which requires the President to develop and implement a comprehensive policy to cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015 through aid, trade, debt relief, and coordination with the international community, businesses and NGOs. This legislation was introduced in December. Smith and Congressman Spencer Bachus (R-AL) sponsored the House version of the bill (H.R. 1302), which passed the House last September.

58. I thought so too......
I post about it here, but I'm largely talking to myself in that thread...cause HIllary supporters would prefer that this type of evidence slip away without a notice!!

60. He seems to have worked with a lot of different people in the senate.
It's pretty encouraging to see. You aren't talking to yourself.
