Obama on Edwards: 'I Want Him Involved and Partnering With Me"

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/02/obama-on-edward.html

ABC's Sunlen Miller and Raelyn Johnson Report: Barack Obama told a Racine, Wis., crowd that he would want John Edwards involved and partnering with him if he becomes president.

The response came when an audience member asked if they should anticipate an Obama-Edwards ticket anytime soon.

Obama said he tries to avoid being presumptuous because he has not locked in the nomination but added, "I will say this, I think John Edwards is somebody who lifted up the issues of poverty and the working families, in a powerful way. I think he's extraordinarily talented. He is going to be a major voice in the Democratic party for years to come and I want him involved and partnering with me in moving this country forward."

...

Obama has been actively courting Edwards' endorsement, and has indicated the two talk regularly on the phone. A face-to-face meeting between the former rivals for the Democratic nomination was scheduled for Monday night in North Carolina, but was abruptly canceled same day.

"It will be rescheduled. We're gonna make it happen," Obama said of the meeting on Monday.

Edwards has been very complimentary of Obama while out on the trail, and quickly came to his defense when he was criticized by Sen. Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton. During a campaign stop in South Carolina last month, when he was still in the race, Edwards joked about an Obama-Edwards ticket saying, "I'm running for the Democratic nomination. I think maybe he should be running for my VP."

1. oh well if JE decides to endorse Obama
expect a slew of anti-Edwards vitriolic posts by Clintonistas everywhere...unless of course he endorses HER, in which case he will be the next best thing to an endorsement from Jesus Himself

2. The opposite will apply as well.
If he fails to have an epiphany and see the infinite wonderfulness that is Obama, his minions will trash Edwards like they have done to many other good progressives who do not support their candidate.

6. Maybe He Should Show Up To Vote. His Record is Horrific
He has missed 40% of the votes in the Senate. I don't think that is a good record for a novice

10. yea and maybe Hillary should have stayed home
the day that her and Bill's buddy Joe LIEberman and John Kyl's bill came to the floor-that one made me a believer that I should NEVER support her

16. Who started the "John Edwards is a Twinkie" thread? I assumed it was an Obama fan.
I'll be surprised if it was a Clintonista.

4. Regardless of whom he elects to endorse...
...there will be those on either side (and those pretending to be on either side as well) slamming him. As with all of the "celebrity" endorsements, I for one don't slam them, nor do I begrudge them their choice. If Edwards endorses Senator Clinton, I'm sure he has his reasons, and my congratulations go to her for the endorsement.

There is SO much projection taking place here on DU. The same thing the right-wing does to us all the time. Snip out the nastiest and most hateful of comments and claim it is representative of the larger group. It's really not appropriate or accurate.

5. I disagree.
I think you will find that most Obama supporters respect John, and if I'm not mistaken by the many polls - he was always the lead in second to their vote.

IMO, Obama's history of community organization and plans are a great fit for John's goals. I think the two would be a wonderful compliment to each other, and yes I might question the WHY if he endorsed Clinton - but I would quickly assume it was because she was ahead and it would ensure that he could have a national stage to continue working on his plans.

Someone mentioned the other day about him being the Gore of Poverty. I personally think it would be excellent for him to take on that level of visibility to the issue, and keep the politics out of it. But if his endorsement of a candidate - and joint partnership helps move that personal campaign forward... Then more power to him.

9. I voted for Edwards. I won't ever trash him.
I'll respect whatever his choice is, even if he chooses not to endorse anyone.

13. I agree libnurse
I've been saying it for the past 2 weeks-the Clinton campaign will offer him the moon, stars AND THE SUN to get the endorsement-they desperately need some good news to stave off the bad...Obama doesn't really "need" Edwards the way Hillary Clinton does

18. hmmm...strange
because if I recall during one of his his last debates he called her on her support for Kyl/LIEberman as being "naive", to think that George Bush and the rest of the Neo-cons wouldn't use that vote as a pretext to another invasion-he saw right through that one didn't he?

It's been all over the news and this forum.

And it's why the Obama fans have been smarming Edwards lately. Try to keep up.

11. I think Edwards' platform is so important that I'd be happy to
see him as Clinton's or Obama's VP. I'd rather see him as the president, but I'd settle for VP because I think he could keep the focus on these important issues. I also think he would be an asset to either ticket as far as electability.

14. Edwards as a VP could shift my vote.
I'm not that enthused with Obama or Clinton. They each have their good and bad points. Edwards does too of course, but he has taken the lead on discussing populist issues that the other two wouldn't have without him. I lean toward Obama, but would give serious consideration to a Clinton/Edwards ticket. I would like to see an end to the DLC, but Obama has his own brand of conservatism that turns me off.
