Former Clinton Superdelegate Switches to Support Barack Obama for President
Obama Release on Superdelegate

WEST ORANGE, NJ –Christine “Roz” Samuels, a superdelegate from Montclair, New Jersey, who was supporting Hillary Clinton announced she was now supporting Senator Barack Obama for President today, citing his ability to unite the country:

“I now support Barack Obama because he has brought about a new wave of hope and energy to this country, especially among our young people, who represent our future. People want to see change. Barack can help unite this country and help us embrace our diverse nation.

“I am also proud to support Senator Obama because he spoke clearly and forcefully against the war in Iraq from the start. I know he has the leadership to make sure we bring our young men and women home as quickly and carefully as possible, and ensure all Americans have access to affordable health care.”

Samuels served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Newark Teachers’ Union, Local 481 from 1995 until 2007. Samuels is a former Commissioner of the Essex County Board of Elections, a member of the Montclair Democratic Committee, and active in the Montclair and state-wide NAACP.

1. I am an Obama supporter, but the ONLY way that delegate should switch is if Obama won the district
where he came from.

Super Delegates should not even be allowed, but if they are, they should reflect the will of the district they come from

3. Well......
we will see if Obama changes his tune. He has said that super delegates should support the candidate who won their primary. Bet he finds a way to "explain" it differently if super delegates start to switch. Uniter that he is and all

10. Well, if the Clinton campaign is announcing its intentions to use....
..."more incendiary means" to garner delegates (strongarming and seating the invalid FL&MI delegates), it's good that the Obama campaign is demonstrating that if such an effort is made, it will be responded to swiftly and effectively. Clintons SD numbers are likely quite soft. I would hope that it doesn't come to that, but if it does, well...

11. They should probably go with overall popular vote and pledged delegates
i think that would be most democratic.

4. Yes they can,
but in the end, I hope that their votes will correspond with their constituents' choice.

6. I voted for Obama in NJ but....
I think that the super delegates should vote for whoever won the state's popular vote. If that means the NJ super delegates go to Clinton then so be it. The only way this is going to get sorted out is with consistency across the board.

12. This is a VERY important development -- she's broken the ice ...
and despite numerous protestations to the contrary on THIS VERY THREAD, I don't think a self-selective group should be bound by how their district voted. What if, you represent an interstate organization, like a union?
