Edwards, Richardson got most S. Texas donations

"If money talks, U.S. Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama are this area's third and fourth choice for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Former candidates John Edwards and Bill Richardson scored the most financial support in 2007 from four regional counties, according to a Caller-Times analysis of campaign finance information. Edwards, a trial lawyer from South Carolina, attracted heavy support from local lawyers, raising more than $92,000. The analysis included data from 2007. Candidates have not yet filed campaign finance reports for January with the Federal Election Commission. Richardson has been out of the race since Jan. 10 and Edwards dropped out Jan. 30.

"There's no question that John Edwards was everyone's favorite, just by the mere fact that John Edwards has spent a lot of time in Texas since four years ago," said Hugo Berlanga, a former longtime state representative. "Bill Richardson had ties to Corpus Christi back when he first ran for Congress."

But now that Clinton and Obama are the two Democratic candidates left standing, locked in a neck-and-neck race for delegates, political observers foresee most local support being thrown to Clinton. She has traditionally performed better among Hispanics and has maintained ties to Texas."

This is one reason Edwards' endorsement is still relevant. Imagine a visit to South Texas in an area hurt by Katrina or Rita to announce an endorsement for Clinton or Obama. Follow this with a speech by O or C promising to continue John's fight to end poverty and give a voice to the voiceless. Powerful stuff.

I'm also surprised that the question of Richardson's endorsement isn't being discussed more.
