Obama's chief economic advisor Austin Goolsbee was being bombarded with questions on CSNBC's .....
Edited on Thu Feb-14-08 10:09 PM by ElsewheresDaughter
Kudlow and Company as to why he was supporting Obama's liberal policies that would disrupt the free market.

he responded "obviously Obama wouldn't be able to deliver on most of his promises." He reassured the others "that nothing was set in stone and that Obama was just campaigning."

He seems not to believe half the stuff Obama says.

it was enlightening to say the least.

1. If Obama's coattails are as long as I hope, then he will "deliver"
whether or not Goolsbee believes he can.

FDR ran as a moderate and governed as a progressive because the moment in history and the citizens demanded it.

20. "He seemed to know alot (sic)"
Sheesh! First thing for Obama to do is toss this "economic adviser" overboard. What's this about the Free Market anyway? The guy sounds like a halfwit -- "He's just campaigning." -- You don't say something like that, anyway, about someone on whose team you're supposed to be a helpful member. Obama has enough money to pay this bonehead quite a bit. Barack, fire him!

The poster on myspace looks pretty young.

Forgive me for this, but it should have read, "He seemed to know a lot."

3. Some kind of lobbyist? (wrong, moosebreath)
Austan Goolsbee is an economist:

His educational degrees are: B.A. summa cum laude (economics), Yale University, 1991; M.A. (economics), Yale University, 1991; Ph.D. (economics), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1995. He was an Alfred Sloan Fellow (2000-02) and Fulbright scholar (2006-07).

He is currently the Robert P. Gwinn Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. (Note: NOT the U of C Economics Department, but at the B School--for those who want to gasp.) He is also a Research Fellow at the American Bar Foundation<, Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a member of the Panel of Economic Advisors to the Congressional Budget Office.[br />
As for the rest of your post, I guess it's clear your second-hand report is not to be taken as very credible.

Just like the rest of his top economic advisers, like one who advocates Social Security privatization.

13. If not for Goolsbee, the Dems would not have been able to fight SS privatization
He was the author of the famous study that showed that all privatization would do is line the pockets of brokerage firms with tens of billions of dollars. It was Goolsbee's report that John Kerry used to fight Bush's Social Security privatization plan. And he was an adviser to Kerry.

Jeebus, I don't know why you folk can't research your assertions before posting. You read something off soome whack web site and don't even bother to check out the details so that you can assess for yourselves.

11. Funny how you left out the part where (the creepy) Will said ...
well, he's a Democrat and not to the right, but just the same he's an amiable guy.

Economics is the only academic discipline that in recent decades has moved in the direction that America and much of the world has moved, to the right. Goolsbee no doubt has lots of dubious ideas -- he is, after all, a Democrat -- about how government can creatively fiddle with the market's allocation of wealth and opportunity. But he seems to be the sort of person -- amiable, empirical and reasonable -- you would want at the elbow of a Democratic president, if such there must be.

5. He'll deliver for the corporations. Who is Austin Goolsbee? GEORGE WILL praised him
Yes, the "progressive" St. Obama's chief economic adviser was praised by none other than George Will.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/03/AR2007100302003.html

-snip-

. Goolsbee, however, says globalization is responsible for "a small fraction" of today's income disparities. He says that "60 to 70 percent of the economy faces virtually no international competition." America's 18.5 million government employees have little to fear from free trade; so do auto mechanics, dentists and many others.

Goolsbee's rough estimate is that technology -- meaning all that the phrase "information economy" denotes -- accounts for more than 80 percent of the increase in earnings disparities, whereas trade accounts for much less than 20 percent. This is something congressional Democrats need to hear from a Democratic economist as they resist trade agreements with South Korea and such minor economic powers as Peru, Panama and Colombia.

10. If true that's distressing....As distressing as whet else I heard on CNBC
If Obama is that cynical, then it truly is distressing.

But in the cynicism department, it is similar to a report I heard on CNBC a while back that Hillary had been meeting with Big Business types and reassuring them that she would not be a populist, and that she really would be pro-business.

They both ought to shake off those shackles.

17. Do you have a link for that?
I just tracked down a video of Goolsbee on Kudlow & Co from this past Monday discussing Obama's economic plan -- a five minute segment -- and he said nothing even close to what you've posted. In fact, Goolsbee ended the segment saying something like, "Did you guys just get your flu shots today or something? I can't believe what I'm hearing."

Was he on some other time?

Here's the link I found:

It sounded weird enough to have been on Free Republic. Am I prejudiced in thinking myspace is rather a shaky place to get economic information?

Incidentally, I do hope Mr. Goolsbee's last name is pronounced "Goalsbee." Or at least, "Golsbee."

Or put another way, does your conscience ever bother you?

I notice that neither you nor any other Clinton supporter bothered to respond to the link in this thread that showed the OP to be utter bullshit. And since when is freaking Myspace a legitimate source for political information anyways? Talk about lowering the bar!

Are you emulating the Clinton campaign desperation, i.e., lies and dostortions ("going negative") as it swirlds down the toilet?
