In Cincinnati Ohio, Hillary Clinton Goes Back to her Roots
Edited on Fri Feb-15-08 01:47 PM by bigtree
February 15, 2008, 12:19 PM

From CBS News' Fernando Suarez:

CINCINNATI -- Sitting at a table with voters concerned about the state of the economy and with a painting of the city of Cincinnati as a backdrop, Clinton said “I am a candidate of, from and for the middle class of America,” adding “that is a great summation of my campaign.”

Clinton was hosting what the campaign calls an “economic roundtable” at the Skyline Chili restaurant here. Clinton listened to stories from voters who spoke about home foreclosures to problems with manufacturing jobs going overseas to a woman who lost her son when he was struck by an SUV. But as Clinton listened to their stories and shared some of her policies she still found moments to inject her jabs at Barack Obama. “This primary offers a very big choice,” said Clinton.

“You can choose speeches or solutions. You can choose talk or action,” she added using her new line of attack she recently unveiled.

Clinton has been using this line over the past few days in an attempt to emphasize the fact that voters are now choosing a president. The campaign hopes that voters will see her as the candidate with more experience.

But as Clinton throws elbows at Obama in her speeches she keeps the focus on the economy. Hoping to relate to middle class Americans, the former First Lady said what America needs is “a fighter, a doer and champion for the middle class again.” Clinton added “I am running to be your president…I don’t need to go back to live in the White House.”

Polls show Clinton leading in Ohio, but she isn’t taking any chances, scheduling several campaign stops today including a visit to Cleveland later today.

Chili Dogs, Economic Policy on Clinton Breakfast Menu

CINCINNATI -- Nothing like starting your morning out with a bowl of chili -- and credit card talk.

At 10:22 a.m., Sen. Hillary Clinton addressed a jam-packed, standing-room-only crowd at Skyline Chili, a popular spot in Cincinnati. (So popular, in fact, that it's got a Wikipedia entry.) Before even setting foot in the joint, Clinton's aides called and ordered the New York senator two Cheese Coney chili dogs. No onions, please.

It was billed as an economic roundtable, and Clinton unveiled a plan to tackle credit card abuses, promote fair lending and improve access to fair credit. Aides handed out a five-page proposal, highlighting that Ohio ranks sixth among states when it comes to high credit card debt; according to the Columbus Dispatch, Ohioans owed a combined total of $33.1 billion in card debt in 2005. The room of mostly 30- and 40-something women, some of whom took time off work this morning to attend, erupted in applause when Clinton said she'd impose an annual interest rate cap of 30 percent. "See, there's a difference between giving speeches and offering solutions," she said to continued applause.

Introduced by Mark Mallory, the city's mayor, and seated next to Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Cleveland, Clinton took questions on health care, home foreclosures, small-business growth and education. At one point, after a nearly minute-long answer on the failures of No Child Left Behind, Martha Hanon, a retired public school teacher, told Clinton: "I've never seen a candidate so wealthy in information."

1. You know anything about Cincinnatti?
I do....have been there a few times...but have never lived there although I am a native Ohioan.

Cincinatti is a REPUBLICAN strong-hold. So, if Hillary is going back to her roots, then what you are telling me is that her roots are in a mid-West Republican strong-hold.

...so the inference is NOT mine. Hello???

All I can tell you is that this is HOW that title hit me as a native Ohioan and a life-long Democrat.

Suppose it might hit others in the same way??? :eyes:

...Cincinnati, Ohio, that is what the headline said to me. If you are talking about her actual roots of activism, that is not so good either: Remember who was a Goldwater Girl back in 1964?

Please, your desperation is showing!

Although it's cracking a bit. The city itself is Democratic, but Hamilton County is heavily Republican. However, for the first time in ages Democrats have a majority Board of County Commissioners.

... I feel it's pretty important to point out that both of Hillary's events in Cincinnati so far have been tiny, and by invitation only.

Invitation Only. Not so "rootsy" after all.

Here's what's up in The 'Nati:

79. Not petty. Honest criticism.
Michelle Obama is speaking to thousands at an open rally at Music Hall in the poorest neighborhood in Cincinnati, as I type this.

I don't want our town to be a flyover for Hillary. If she wants to convince the voters, she needs to talk to people who are not on her mailing list.

Don't pretend that she hasn't had rallies or won't, in a state where she has so much support.

And, I don't think the Obamas (or any other politician) can actually hear the concerns of folks when they're speaking to them from the podium.

83. Since the thread was about Cincinnati, I thought I'd speak to Cincinnati.
I'm on the ground down here. We have 2+ weeks to go, and I hope she'll visit again, and hold a rally so that people who aren't already supporters can see her and here what she has to say.

But I'm not holding my breath. I don't think this is a part of the state where she'll find her pocket of support. And that's ok. But there's nothing wrong with critiquing her method of reaching voters in my city. It's not the best plan, her approach.

85. The concerns of targeted voters who have already lined up in her column.
Those aren't the people she needs to reach... she already has them.

A better strategy for Ohio would be to reach out to the voters who aren't at all plugged into this race yet. Something the Obama team seems to understand... and one of the reasons the Obama team is racking up states.

I sincerely feel that Clinton is approaching her ground game in a weird manner, and that she's not adjusting or tweaking a terribly unsuccessful strategy, ever since Super Tuesday.

87. actually, as a poster above pointed out, this isn't a district where she has the most support
so she IS reaching out. Also, these events get run again and again on local stations, where most folks in America get their news.

Again, you assume she isn't doing large venues. She is. To suggest that she's not is false.

here's one account. There are others scheduled in Ohio which I'm not going to waste another minute highlighting for you here.

"Hillary Rodham Clinton in southern Ohio, is expected to join the former president for his stops in Canton, Toledo, Steubenville and Marietta . . .

The primary is still 2 and a half weeks away. Obama hasn't even stepped foot in the state.

She has to go to Cincinatti because it's such an important part of Ohio.

But Hamilton County (Cinci) is likely to go overwhelmingly Obama.

I don't know how to explain it...I'm just talking about making it more personal.

For instance....what does it mean to be able to get FEHBP insurance at a good price? It means you have the same insurance that congress has...you have freedom from worry about pre-existing conditions, you have freedom from worry about losing your home over medical bills.

I'm just talking about spelling it out. Make it CHANGE YOU CAN COUNT ON and CHANGE FOR YOUR LIFE.

19. There is a much bigger bi-partisan tyranny we have to dismantle
Over the last 35 years we've created a monster that doesn;t really care which party is in power.

We've turned over government to monopolistic mega multinational corporations, global capital that follows its own rules and a set of values that puts the real concerns of real people at the end of the line of priorities.

Until the Democratic Party and its leadership address these very real issues, it will continue to offer micro solutions that accomplish nothing.

66. Can't forget Graeter's!
Every time a friend of mine visits she brings me pints of it packed in dry ice. I still have some of their waffle cones but no ice cream! :(

68. mmm -- raspberry chocolate chip -- I'm like Homer Simpson
when I think about it!

I ordered some from the web - they send it packed in dry ice -- but it's so expensive and if you don't get home in time it might not be there! So I'll have to wait for my next treat.

75. And GOETTA, y'all!
One thing I love about living in Cincinnati is that we are one of the last remaining cities with a truly unique, regional cuisine. :-)

... all I could think was, "Damn, that's going to be one stinky bus ride up to Cleveland."

52. Born and raised in Cincinnati (Mariemont), I can tell you these things:
Ohio is a DYING state; I see it get worse every time I go back.

I still do not believe that most of the good people I know there, however, will EVER vote Dem, and it baffles me.

Skyline Chili is freaking awesome, and I miss it terribly (the canned just isn't the same).

57. Born and raised in Portsmouth
And yes, I agree about OH being a dying state (and about the chili). Portsmouth looks like a third world country that's been at war for 20 years and now 25% of its citizens are living below the poverty line.

HOWEVER, take heart -- the good people of the eastern, Appalachian portion of District 2 -- Pike, Scioto, Adams and Brown Counties -- have voted overwhelmingly Dem against Jean Schmidt in the past two elections. In Scioto County alone the numbers were 65-35%! (Check out my journal for more discussions on this topic.) The problem is wih the satellite counties surrounding Cincinnati. I see no hope for them and am at a loss to explain their RW fanaticism.

Now that Strickland is governor (another Scioto Co native) we are finally beginning to see industry returning, thanks to his efforts. Strickland is incredibly popular in that area and his endorsement of HRC will carry a lot of weight.

67. Not going to agree with you here
My dad lives in a very thriving suburb of Cincinnati (Loveland). Some of those suburbs are going high tech (biotech) and growing.
Some parts are dying others are not. I also have relatives in areas of East Cleveland suburbs where things are not too bad.
I would say the major cities have the typical problems of most big american cities these days.

59. I'd love to see the credit card reform bill in Congress
pass. Clinton would be the one to add some clout to get that done. I'm glad she's talking about this issue. It's one of the legacies of the Bush years---unfettered corporations.

Today she is a Buckeye.

Come the May Indiana primary, she will be a Hoosier and a fan of Danica Patrick.

74. Agreed.
So why does the Hillary Camp keep telling Democratic voters in "red" states that they don't count, all the while enjoying their chili-spaghetti, Maid-Rites and Tex-Mex?

65. Bullshit. She grew up in a rich white Chicago suburb, went to an exclusive college
when she was a Goldwater girl, and turned down a job offer from Saul Alinsky to do community organizing so she could work in the establishment system instead. She has spent her entire life among the elite of society. Middle Class my ass.

We lived frugally in the 'rich' suburbs of Washington that I grew up in. Hell, the Clintons had to be among the least wealthy of their counterparts when they came to the White House.

oh, thank you thank you! Only a few years ago 30% was considered loan sharking in New York state but now that we have Hillary fighting for us, we wont have to fear the 40 and 50% rates her owners.......er contributors wanted!

A true friend of the middle cla......well, a true friend to somebody anyway.
