I saw both McCain and Obama today
Going along on my son's field trip today, I attended events held by both McCain and Obama. It was two completely different worlds. McCain spoke to somewhere around 500 people, give or take a little. It was incredibly interesting to actually stand in a room with these people. They were seniors and some veterans and mostly people I would describe as older. There was no energy or excitement in the room. It was actually kind of weird. I can't figure out a way to describe it. First, we were all asked to stand up and say the pledge of allegiance. Then someone came on stage to praise the veterans in the audience. The theme seemed to be veterans and the military. McCain then came on stage. The first thing he spoke about was terrorism and the evil people in the world who want to do us harm and how he will protect us. Then he attacked the democrats over the surveillance bill.
Of course he said that the Bush tax cuts have to be made permanent and listed the amount of tax increases average Americans would have to pay if they were not made permanent.

Mercifully, we had to leave early so we could get to the Obama rally. One more thing, McCain is indeed an old man. He is stooped, his hair is totally white, and he moves slowly. I am just stating a fact here.

One more thing, I honestly don't get these people. I looked around the room as McCain was talking and wondered what was going on in their heads. I wondered how a person could think this war in Iraq was a good thing, how massive tax cuts are helping our society, or how global warming can actually be questioned.

We had reserved seats at the Obama rally, so we were up very close. It was really something. There is no doubt that this man has a kind of charisma that allows him to fill up a room the moment he walks in. After being introduced by a woman who works full time and has no health insurance, Obama simply bounded up on to the stage and started talking to the crowd. The place holds about 5,000 and it was completely packed. The crowd was so excited and the entire venue was full of energy. Obama first spoke about health insurance, stating that his plan will in fact insure everyone. People can purchase the federal health plan Obama himself has and people will pay according to their income. Or people can choose to keep what they have, with a rate reduction. He promised to get our troops out of Iraq in 2009. He spoke about global warming and greenhouse gases, the housing and sub-prime crisis, and the energy crisis. He spoke of the solutions he has.

And he spoke about hope. He spoke about how we have an opportunity at this moment in time to make a decision to change the course of this country.

I know many think he is arrogant, but he didn't come across that way at all. When you see him in person, he cuts a striking figure. He is simply full of confidence and a belief that things in this country drastically need to change and that he can be the president who can set us on a new road. He talked a lot about policy and gives the impression that he may be something of a wonk.

It was clear that McCain has no desire to change anything. Except ending pork barrel spending. His example was "The Bridge to Nowhere." He left out the fact that it was a republican senator who tried to push that through. That was pretty much it. The same war, the same energy policy, a few bones here and there to address global warming (which may or may not be a real thing). Oh, and everything the Democrats do is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Hillary is coming to town on Monday.

4. What an opportunity to see both candidates
What did your son think?

I've only seen one candidate up close in my entire 55 years. Walter Mondale spoke at my college too many years ago :-).

5. Did you happen to count the number of times McCain said "my friends"?
Whenever I watch one of his speeches, I try to get an average and it seems to be about once every forty-five seconds. This repetition was rivaled only by Rudy's "9/11" references.

13. Did McCain do the one about the DNA study of the bears in Montana/ paternity issue?
The drunken sailor bit? How many times did he say "my friends." Did he do that Six Million Dollar Man karate chop thing with his right hand while he was talking? You forgot to mention one thing about McCain's crowds. They are so damn white you need sunglasses or you'll go snowblind. I notice that every time I see him on the TeeVee. They usually scrounge the room beforehand for some guy with a little melanin and put him right behind McCain (we'll call him "Token") but other than that - very well aged vanilla crowd he's got.

I've been to an Obama rally myself, I went with an open mind and I really, really enjoyed the experience. It was so much fun to be with so many Democrats who were happy and excited. I loved the energy. I liked a great deal of what he had to say. I was disheartened though when he said he "we want to see healthcare reform enacted by the end of my first term." That's not good enough, not urgent enough for me. Why wait that long? What if you don't GET a second term and the process is incomplete or weak? Many Presidents don't get a second term. It is the biggest, but not the only reason why we do not support him in the primaries. If he ends up being the nominee, we might be disappointed, but of course we will support him - WITH ENTHUSIASM.

I hope you will go to see Hillary and listen to what she has to say with an open mind as well. This is a truly historic election.

25. Hoof, that's gorgeous!
Where was that taken, and what were the circumstances?

Chelsie is really beautiful. She visited Cincinnati last night for a private event, but the local TV news crews were there, and I just couldn't believe how amazing she looks, and how much she lights up a screen.

Sorry to get so banal, but she really is just a stunning young woman... as are your girls with their gorgeous smiles!

Good God, what really sucks is that we're going to have to hear that until November now. :-(

Ever notice how he can't give a speech without either staring directly at the teleprompter, or head-down and reading note cards like the football player student body candidate in "Election"? :-)

17. WOW, I'm so jealous...when I was a kid, our field trips were to like, the dentist or something...
HAA!!

I saw Obama at Take Back America in Washington DC last year and KNEW the minute I saw him that he was extra special, absolute magic on stage, his inflections make you pay attention in that it doesn't seem like a political speech...poor Edwards came right after him, and it just wasn't the same...

I've also seen HIllary and Bill CLinton speak, and they are also not in the same league when it comes to speaking TO people...

BTW - Got to shake Obama's hand, almost got an autograph to my Take Back America booklet, but not quite...

18. Cheeseheads rule
Excellent post. I'm envious that you were able to see both likely nominees and from a good vantage point.

McCain looks old for a reason. On the one hand I empathize with him for all he has been through. On the other, I have no sympathy at all for his willingness to do the bidding of his over-privileged corporate masters.

I notice you report that he told people how much "average taxes" would go up if the Bush tax cuts are repealed. Of course, anyone who is paying attention knows that the Democratic proposals are actually a mixture of additional tax credits for the middle class, NO repeal of tax cuts for the middle class, and repeal or increases at the very high end of the income spectrum. Repeal on the capital gains, dividend and inheritance taxes would have little or no effect on most middle class families. Did Senator McCain mention that MEDIAN taxes would go DOWN under all of the competing Democratic tax packages? Did he mention how many more years of solvency Social Security would gain if the "Bush tax cuts are repealed?" Possibly not.

McCain finished 894th out of 899 in his class at Annapolis. He tended to disregard subjects that didn't interest him. Sound familiar?

Hope you get to see Hillary and report back. Thanks again.

19. I was 50 feet or less from Obama in Maine last weekend.
I went to the Obama rally last Saturday in Bangor, Maine. 7000 people inside and about 2 or 3 thousand more who couldn't get in, and I was one of the those who got up front for the outdoor rally that he did first before going in the hall. (Hundreds more gave up because they couldn't find parking space.) NEVER have seen anything like this in all my years of politicking. Obama was honest, humble, graceful, uplifting, and yes, SPECIFIC as he could be in a short amount of time.
GO OBAMA !!!!

20. McCain 500, Obama 5,000? A large gap!
If any vote fraud perps are reading this I must say November is going to be difficult. Maybe this would be the easiest voting machine fix?

democraticvotes >>= 1
republicanvotes <<= 3

That would give you a comfortable lead (4,000 to 2,500 for the sample case) with room in case of record voter turnout.

For the non-technical people that is bit shifting vote counts. A little nerd gloating. :)

I agree with your descriptions. Key words: confident, friendly, intellectual, sincere, thoughtful. His smile lights up the room, and he moves energetically but gracefully.
We had a crowd of about 1,000, all that the expo could hold.

Isn't it amazing, to get the chance to see all the candidates, and especially with your son? This kind of thing is as rare as a solar eclipse. It's just staggering to me. The pure pandemonium breaking out in Ohio, for example, exceeds my every expectation.

Climate change is the most urgent issue our species has ever faced, yet I still haven't heard either candidate articulate a plan for immediate action that will make any measurable difference.

And please, don't let it include biofuels!
