AP:

I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she’s feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal,” he told reporters.

’Cause you know how women are….

Driven by feelings…. Worried about their appeal… Prone to tears… The whole phases of the moon thing…

And did you catch the dogwhistle in “periodically”?

The pronunciation was what did it.

But, that said, he also has such excellent enunciation, he makes the English most of us speak sound garbled. It reminds me of the late Senator Dirksen, another compelling speaker, who hovered on every word.

How can really know? And, there are WAY more important things upon which to focus.

Period bullshit. Shame on you.

link to real statement in context, and article:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080216/ap_on_el_pr/obama

During a news conference, he was asked about Clinton's accusation that he watered down a bill regulating the nuclear industry. He pointed out that Clinton is criticizing him for a bill she voted for and touted on her Web site.

"I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she's feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal," he told reporters.

At a subsequent rally at the downtown Midwest Airlines Center, Obama brought up her latest criticism of him as someone who gives a good speech but doesn't have much action to show for it. Clinton told voters in Cincinnati Friday, "This primary election offers a very big choice to the voters of Ohio. You can choose speeches or solutions."

"She's right," Obama said in Milwaukee. "Speeches alone don't do anything. But you know what, neither do negative attacks."

164. That's not true
Read your own post. The quote, in its complete form, is "I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she's feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal."

If there were more to it, it's not reported here. Everything that follows in your news article was said on a different day and really isn't relevant that I can see.

Obama said what he said. I'm sure it's precisely what he meant.

98. Obama was choosing his words VERY carefully, injecting his sexist comment with cool precision.
His speech was halting, he was thinking about every word. And he knew he was calmly calling Hillary an emotional, hysterical bitch.

Is is so disheartening that people are not astute enough to catch this - or refuse to - or don't care.

36. Not surprising -- look how sexist his supporters are.

Sexism has always been a problem at DU but it's mushroomed since the race narrowed down to Hillary and Barack.

They've added ageism, too, and anti-Boomerism, when Obama himself is a Boomer.

It's depressing that sexism is still so prevalent among people claiming to be liberals or progressives who support Democrats.

Not as a "dog-whistle" thing, but more about the way men can be unconsciously dismissive of women. This was actually about her statement that he watered-down the nuclear energy bill to satisfy his big nuke donors - this is a very valid issue, one that the NY Times just wrote an article on. But rather than address the allegations, Obama goes the other route: "You know how they are, so moody, so irrational..." And then whine about negative attacks. Which is a pretty good way to duke the charge.

108. Thank you, Marie26. I tried to explain upthread. Obama was choosing his words VERY carefully.
He haltingly, carefully called Hillary an emotional, hysterical bitch.

It's win/win for Obama: he ducks the issue, he calls Hillary and emotional, hysterical bitch. And he divides Democrats AGAIN, trying to discern just what he meant. This dude continues to scare me.

People please. WAKE UP!!!! Please look at this pig in a poke you're rushing to buy.

In the full interest of disclosure - and to deflect the inevitable slurs - I am not a Hillary supporter.

Have you heard him say it? Can you point to the video of the event? And, when you say "pig in a poke," aren't you just trying to rehash the vile anti-Israel sentiment that has been falsely attributed to Sen Obama, with the "poke" as a subtle form of misandry?

Yes, Obama is very careful with his language. He knows how to play the music & hit just the right note. Here, he's diverted the reporter away from the actual question (nuclear ties), to a different question (Is Hillary a bitch? Why is she being so negative? Why is she losing?). He doesn't really care if a reporter follows up by asking if it was sexist (unlikely), or follows up on the other themes he's suggested. All that matters is that he's changed the direction of the questions onto a different route. I bet he didn't get a follow-up question about the nuclear bill. It's like pointing & shouting "Look, a pony!!" The media gasps and swivels - "Where??" and the hyperactive media runs off to the next cool topic. It's sort of scary how good he is at manipulating the media.

Edited on Sat Feb-16-08 05:43 PM by Tactical Progressive
You think his snide smears are going to play against McCain like his misogynistic disdain does against Hillary?

What do you think is going to happen when he smears a Publican with a sly remark that he's used to getting away with against the Clintons?

Think Publicans will let it slide? Think the media will protect Obama when the Publicans go after him?

Democrats are confusing Obama's skills with a media establishment that pretty much sanctions anything that will help stop a Clinton from running things.

144. I honestly don't know
I keep thinking the media will hold Obama accountable... any day now... and it never happens. The old razzle-dazzle keeps working. Will the media fall out of love w/him when he faces McCain, or will he still get the same treatment? I can totally see the media still protecting Obama to an extent - "Why is that mean McCain attacking?" But they used to love McCain too. Who will win the media's heart? "The Maverick" or "The Inspirational Hope?" Gosh, it's better than the Bachelor. My money's on Obama - McCain is old news to them. And I'm not an Obama supporter. But IMO the media has chosen their favorite candidate & that's not going to change anytime soon.

152. They probably would support Obama
if this was in a vacuum. I get the same feeling as you. They like Obama and McCain, with Obama more.

But one thing they always do - is cater to the Publican perspective.

Just picture something negative like the drug use question. What happens when the right is bringing that up, asking exactly what drugs and how much for how long, and how did he afford all of that cocaine as a young man ... was he selling drugs to support his habit? What do you think the media will do, dismiss those questions when they keep being brought up? With Hillary they could slam her as hard as they want for being 'negative' and cutthroat blah blah.

With the Publicans it won't be any such thing. They media will be ready to talk about 'values voters' who believe in 'family values' and how isn't this a valid concern of people who care about their children, and what do they tell their children, and what about this poll that says that 72% of voters think it is 'a concern' or 'important' whether a President has been a drug addict. And when Obama's numbers slip they'll talk about it all over again. This could happen on any number of issues real and fabricated, and with Obama's smart-ass shitmouth there will be plenty of opportunities. I wouldn't be surprised if he unites Publicans even more than people fear Hillary might, with his combination of ego and low-road tactics.

I keep saying this - the media is protecting, coddling and promoting Obama against the Clintons; even more - they are going way past credibility and even civility to 'Gore' the Clintons, even to the point of projecting Obama's race-baiting onto them.

When it comes to Publicans however, the media isn't going to protect Obama from anything more than the most outrageous claims, let alone coddle or promote him.

Do you really think most people weigh whether Hillary is post-menopausal or not when they hear that kind of stuff?

It hits on an almost subconscious level. Woman=periods=down days=moody=unreliable=unpredictable=can't be trusted with the Presidency.

The really sad thing is that it probably wasn't even conscious on Obama's part -- it is deeply ingrained sexism.

You lose your own credibility and trivialize real sexism.

Women support Obama. His rallies attract thousands of women of all ages. Women across the country have voted for him and caucused for him. He is married to a strong smart independent woman who he respects deeply. Obama is going to win the nomination and the general election...because more women will support him over John McCain.

Maybe you should find those women who support Obama, and tell them he's sexist. But thanks for the laugh. As if we don't have enough bullshit here already.

People have seen a bit of her temper in the media, and he was calling it to attention some more. I always get the feeling that she is a very angry person behind the scenes, prone to yelling and dressing-down her employees. It flashes out occasionally.

He was trying to show how she lashes out at opponents because she's angry that she's as behind as she is. A hot temper is not the right temperament for the Presidency.

Like totally abandoning the Clintons for mentioning fairy tale and MLK. But, somehow are totally blind to seeing/hearing misogynistic comments. If Obama was a black woman...I can just imagine the hate filled pages that would be posted here. Half or more would probably be deleted. I guess that's what blind bias following does for one.

How come when the Clintons say something they are accused of planning EVERY word to have some less obvious sinister meaning and are calculating...but when Obama says direct obvious things...they are dismissed as, "Oh he didn't say that or mean that...you're just imagining things" Give me a brake!

163. Hillary didn't say "shuck and jive"
In fact, no one in her campaign said "shuck and jive." Andy Cuomo wasn't even one of her surrogates.

But the words that she was only attacking because of "periodically... feeling down" (instead of having a valid point) came right out of Barack's own mouth. As did the idea that she only served tea in the White House. And that "her claws came out" when she attacked his record. And probably half a dozen other sexist bullshit stereotypes that he's spouted throughout this campaign.

But hey, that's just the way things are, right? We women are just too touchy. We need to quit playing the gender card. No harm no foul. Isn't that how the story goes?

Maybe he's expecting her to iron his shirts.

125. The period before each big vote after seeing her poll numbers.
I think that may be what he's referring too.

130. I saw that video snippet 3 times...
Edited on Sat Feb-16-08 04:47 PM by CitizenLeft
...and each time, he pauses at "feeling down..." and each time, I took it to mean "down IN THE POLLS." And each time, I waited that heartbeat of a moment for him to say "in the polls." Because that's the most accurate timing in terms of evidence - when she's been down in the polls. That IS when she attacks, as do all candidates when they're "down."

Period. And I do mean "period" as in "." ... and nothing else.

Cripes.

End of story.

I have been on the fence for a long LONG time, because I believe that both Hillary and Obama are equally competent and would both make great presidents. But you people are pushing me towards Obama.

139. I thought she lost 8 in a row?
Why do Hillary supporters react like that? The same reason Obamites do the same when Ed Rendell tells the truth.

149. She DID! All in a matter of 5 days! But she WAS up-after NH, NV, FL (for some reason), and
after Super Tuesday when she was bragging about winning her "home" state of NY and CA.

borderline sexist...as was mentioned about him on News Hour, "Occasionally your shoes get wet from walking on all that water."

138. Karma is a bitch. He and his cronies swiftboated the Clintons on race with BS
Hopefully he gets his just desserts and gets swiftboated back as being a sexist. Maybe Hillary can get to 85% of the female vote after this. Obama would be done then.

AP--"'Occasionally Hillary sheds her uterine lining into a conveniently placed sanitary napkin," said Senator Obama, "and that may also affect her decision-making process.'

He then knelt down on his musalla, or traditional prayer mat, and prayed silently to Allah for several minutes."

It's highly unlikely that this was intentional. And, if it was, it was way too subtle to be effective.

150. Obama is very good with various types of "code speak"

This time it was the sexist bullshit. Usually it's the evangelist/RRRW style language that they're tuned into. He is indeed a gifted orator and with that comes the ability to use words to his advantage--and others detriment.
