My Oped confronting local slime attacks on Obama
Edited on Sat Feb-16-08 02:03 PM by usregimechange
Steven McDonald (February 14, 2008) stated that Barack Obama “has nothing to distinguish him from other candidates except that he is black” and that he is “a very junior senator” who “only served for one year.” Obama was sworn into office as a US Senator on January 4, 2005. I am not that good at math but it seems that Steven has “rounded down” several years too many.

He also doesn’t mention that Obama served for 8 years in the Illinois Senate, including as Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee. Nor does he apparently consider being the President of the Harvard Law Review, a community organizer, a civil rights attorney, a constitutional law professor, and a member of the Foreign Relations and Veterans’ Affairs Committees of the United States Senate to be experience.

There was another legislator from Illinois who had 8 years of policy making experience at the state level and less time as a federal legislator than Obama. His name was Abraham Lincoln. Was he ready for the office of President?

As the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently noted: “If detractors in either party want to continue characterizing the Obama campaign this way, they will have seriously underestimated both the electorate's hunger for meaningful change in how the nation is governed and the candidate himself.”

Our energies could be better utilized working together for the type of change that can result in more than points in a debate. We might be able to work together to, for example, decrease the US infant mortality rate below that of Slovakia.

Sending to the Joplin Globe soon...

2. um, there's one thing wrong with your argument, BHO is NO Abraham Lincoln and the Milwaukee
Journal Sentinel , through the AP or their own writers, has consistently shown BHO to be some messiah-like politician with photos and "articles" that sound like commercials for him rather than objective reporting of facts.

4. Look at the "increase infant mortality rate" sentence
I don't think you mean to imply that having Obama as prez will increase infant mortality in the U.S. Quite the opposite, I suspect.

7. Exactly
His plan will decrease infant mortality. Fewer dead babies (decrease) rather than more dead babies (increase). You need to put in the word "decrease" infant mortality where you origianlly wrote "increase."

9. Damn, I didn't read it that way but you are right, I was using the word "increase" to basically mean
improve. Thanks...
