Anyone wonder why there are at least six threads suddenly about...
"words" or "talk"? I mean, come on people, overreacting much?

Most of them quote historic speeches given by people whose stature and experience dwarfs Obama, as "proof" that words do, actually, mean something. Well, DUH! Nobody said they didn't. JFK's "Ask not," MLK's "I have a dream," FDR's "nothing to fear but fear itself" Lincoln's Gettysburg address...all were quoted. None were stump speeches, though. All had real experience...painful experience and courage...behind them. Comparing them to Obama's stump speeches is ludicrous. My God, even Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel was quoted, to shore up Obama! That's not ludicrous; that's obscene.

1. Haven't you eaten more than your share of sour grapes yet?
What's next, you going to rifle through Obama's drawers and find fault with his socks?

5. No...it means that Hillary made a ridiculous assertion.......

Why does she think that her speeches or anything other than words?

Her "solutions" ain't nothing but mere words that will never be enacted.....because she won't have a working majority to get any of it accomplished.

4. If Senator Clinton goes on to win the nomination, your observation
about "words" will have some resonance.

If she doesn't, Sen. Obama's current trend lines passing her in national polling will.

9. Is it all about winning with you?
The point of this OP appears to be the audacity of audacity. Arrogance. Not pride, but a complete lack of humility.

If HRC started making herself out to be Susan B. Anthony, Miep Gies, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Rosa Parks all rolled into one, the level of bile in the back of my throat would be no lower than it is right now.

10. Is what all about winning with me? Can you "win" a poem by
Adrienne Rich? Or a composition by Paul Simon? Or a drive across Rt. 30 in Nebraska just before a thunderstorm?

Those are worthwhile concerns.

Public service is another.

I'd like to see Sen. Obama do well in this election against the Republicans.

I hope you can dig it.

11. Except, you know, Senator Obama hasn't made himself out to be JFK, MLK, FDR and Winston Churchill.
The citing of speeches by these individuals is a refutation of Senator Clinton's contention that 'words don't matter'; one refutes a point not by attack and insult, but by citation of specific counterexamples. That is the way that civil debate works; by reasoned response, not ad hominem.

20. I hope to god Obama is NOT a Churchill
Outside of what he did in the war against Germany, Churchill was quite a repulsive man - overdoing the booze and cigars and cheating regularly on his wife.

I think Obama has a little more regard for his marriage.

6. So?
The first point is that words do matter, as those many fine examples you cited prove.

The second point is that it's incredibly arrogant and ignorant of a person -- a legislator who is educated in the law and who relies on the precise use of words to achieve her goals -- to say that words don't matter.

You can't make irresponsible, untrue statements and then pretend to be surprised and offended by vehement refutation.

8. I think I know why.
Edited on Sun Feb-17-08 03:24 AM by ingin
“Over the years you've heard plenty of promises from plenty of people and plenty of speeches. And some of those speeches were probably pretty good. But speeches don’t put food on the table. Speeches don’t fill up your tank. Speeches don’t fill your prescriptions,” she said. “My opponent makes speeches. I offer solutions. It’s one thing to get people excited. I want to empower you.”

I think it's great that Hillary is finally trying to inspire people to empower themselves with high flying oratory. All I've been hearing from her this year is "What I'd do when I am president" while that Obama guy keeps saying things like "We are the change We are looking for.
:sarcasm:

13. because many of us heard Obama's speech from Wisconsin tonight on C SPAN
that might be why.

Obama has the audacity to be an excellent speaker.

And some of us have become a part of this "cult like" thing called democracy
where we actually want to rally behind someone and (gasp horrors) vote for him.

14. I heard the speech too
It was okay. I thought he's done better speeches. And yes, he is an excellent speaker. And...?

And hey, vote away! I have no quarrel with your candidate, although he is not mine. I certainly support democracy and voting. It's some of his supporters who bother me, making him out to be something he certainly is not: an almost godlike creature, whose speeches alone can change the world.

16. Alexander kept two things under his pillow at night.
One was a dagger. In a world of uninterrupted warfare and palace intrigue, a knife was sensible defense.

The other was an annotated copy of THE ILIAD from his teacher, Aristotle.

In my opinion that is a workable definition of statecraft.

23. This is part of the speech JFK was to deliver on Nov. 23, 1963
My friends and fellow citizens: I cite these facts and figures to make it clear that America today is stronger than ever before. Our adversaries have not abandoned their ambitions, our dangers have not diminished, our vigilance cannot be relaxed. But now we have the military, the scientific, and the economic strength to do whatever must be done for the preservation and promotion of freedom.

That strength will never be used in pursuit of aggressive ambitions--it will always be used in pursuit of peace. It will never be used to promote provocations--it will always be used to promote the peaceful settlement of disputes.

We in this country, in this generation, are--by destiny rather than choice--the watchmen on the walls of world freedom. We ask, therefore, that we may be worthy of our power and responsibility, that we may exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint, and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of "peace on earth, good will toward men." That must always be our goal, and the righteousness of our cause must always underlie our strength. For as was written long ago: "except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain."

JFK spent his last night and morning in my city, Fort Worth. His last speech was here, his last words to the American public.

JFK was a visionary, which apparently doesn't mean jackshit anymore when someone talks about a new direction for our country.

35. Well, yeah...
I should have known that a normally mild statement like "talk is cheap" would get an extreme overreaction and outrage. Happens all the time when anyone even mildly criticizes, or appears to criticize, Obama. Or even questions him.
