How many people are going to be tired of being preached at after
4 years? Everytime I hear Obama, I think I'm in church. Is the rest of the world and ourselves going to like being Preached at for 4 years. Will it make everyone feel better as the Depression looms on to hear a Preacher call out from the depths of his soul, to tell us to pull up our boot straps and have a little more hope? Personally, I'm already tired of being Preached at. I don't have stake in this pony show anymore.... I can only HOPE it doesn't go as badly as I think it will.

But I'm not giving up on you. I honestly believe that Obama will staff his Executive Branch with energized leaders who will promote Civil Rights for *all* people.

I'm not injecting race, but I'm also not going to give up trying to convince you that Obama is the better of the two candidates. But I will do my best to do this - with respect- :-) :hi:

do that.. I used to admire some of your posts.. Now, you shout and push the race card. He is preaching. NO DOUBT about it. I don't give a shit if he's purple.. I can call what I see and he is using Preaching techniques. Hey its working.. I just don't think it will work if he doesn't have really good plans to drastically change the way we are and move this country in the most Progressive Push that this Century and this World are waiting/ begging for. Knowing his policies, they aren't drastic enough... and the HOPE doesn't fill bellies.

40. re:
Wow you guys have issues. Being preached at has nothing to do with race, its about religion. After 7 years, going on 8 of the “religious right” in control of our government I'm quite sick of the religious undertones that are constantly expressed by our political leader as well. I believe strongly in the first amendment, and feel people have every right to what ever religion or lack thereof they chose, but my preference is to keep that to your church/temple/mosque/alter and in your circle of like minded friends. Religious tolerance sometimes requires you to restrain your religious tendencies in an attempt to respect every others right to their own beliefs. The poster has a valid issue.

between their legs.... Its the Religion I don't like... I decided a long time ago.. their is no house that God has ever built.. Men have built every temple and its those walls that keep the free thought, love, and kindness from really making a "heaven" on earth.

52. I'm sorry, Frenchie .... but I kinda agree with the OP
We've talked about this before, you and I. He definitely uses a sort of preacher voice when he does his big speeches. the inflections seem affected and are very much absent when he's just talking.

I've noticed it an people who have no idea of my politics have mentioned it more than once.

We can say whatever we want about him, support him o not, but that 'preacher' inflection really is there. And some people are bothered by it. Some people just notice it.

So many times I hear HRC talk about "I see..." I just can't get past her arrogance.

My uncle is a Southern Baptist Preacher and I'm a ultra-liberal Catholic (Franciscian). To be honest with you, this SINNER doesn't feel preached at with Obama ... not at all. I feel like I'm part of THE SOLUTION. I also feel that Obama wants to help us be "the best country in the world" ... he wants to build "a team."

To me, Obama, is the 21st Century JFK. I know that sounds lofty, but I feel HOPE when I listen to him. If we don't have HOPE, we have NOTHING.

MSM loves to find a little phrase here or there and go for the jugular.. It reinforce the whole male dominated hysteria that a strong, capable, intelligent woman has to be a bitch... they are afraid of females.. Probably stems back to their own mother/ son relationships.. I particularly feel for Tweety.. he must be harboring some real animosity towards his own mother.

effective he will be in being able to deliver change.. I'm not exactly thrilled with his legislative past in regards to Exellon.. the nuclear industry and the leaks in his own state...

Neither one will be good enough. Kucinich would have been great.. Edwards would have been good.. these two are tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum.. just not as bad as McCain.. so once again hold nose and pick the lesser of two evils in Nov.

24. If he wins, he'll have to govern.
Edited on Sun Feb-17-08 11:24 AM by rucky
He'll have to address the mess Bush left behind. I think he knows that, and we all know there's alot of work ahead of us. This assumption that there's no substance to his message is hogwash. I think what's unrealistic is the notion that a single person will come around to clean up the mess - it's going to take a leader who carries the will of the people behind them. If Obama's on-target with a message that builds those numbers, then he can go into the White House and govern more effectively. Clinton has the top-down gravitas to do some arm-twisting as president, but Obama's taken that advantage she has over him and created something Clinton is lacking - a social movement behind it. Say what you want about the means and message, but if he gets the nomination, having something like that behind our next president will be a huge advantage to the Dems. You know he's not going to go all Billy Graham on us as president, and if you think so, it's an unfounded fear and a knee-jerk reaction to a speaking style that is effective, and mostly known for its misuse.

Bottom line - either you trust Obama's intentions are good, or you don't.

...Come on let's not have no double standards either. America honours Dr. King but doesn't go as far to say, oh his speeches don't count as he was prechinging. The important factor in his speeches is he kindles the enthusiasm in each invidual to believe in themselves and reach for and work for a better day. Can't see that as a negative myself. Although if you see that as a negative I respect your right to that opinion.

50. Dr. King was actually a minister.. so, yes, he did use "preaching" techniques
to inspire change... and it was intended to make people beleive in equality for all men and women. JFK.. had a funny Mass. accent. The words were very inspiring, but his voice cracks me up everytime I hear an old take... It surprises me over and over again.. I always think of a booming voice, delivering and eloquent speech.. and then his little Mass voice comes out, and I laugh a little.

56. Yakkity Yak, God's Talk'n Back!!
Medved has already accused Obama of staging the 'fainting women routine' at several of his appearances i.e. same up front vapors all involving women, same words spoken toward their cares so as to suggest status of healer, similar bottle of water tossed into the crowd invoking 'giver of hospice' symbology, etc

Brooks on The News Hour points out Obama only staging events at universities implying his being unwilling to move amongst the lesser among us, so yeah...

You can see it gearing up already, still...Barack can suggest Clinton is being hysterical without using the word 'hysterical' i.e. "when she gets down she attacks" and so on, it's a lofty position no doubt, he should enjoy it while he is able as the GE will not be pretty.

Yakkity Yak God's Talk'n Back!!

60. Depends On What He Is Preaching
I think you may be confusing preaching...with preaching gospel.
See Webster:
preach (preech) v. <preached, preach-ing>
v.t.
1. to proclaim or make known in a sermon.
2. to deliver (a sermon).
3. to advocate (moral principles, conduct,
etc.) as right or advisable.

You're thinking #'s 1 and 2. I was too until I started thinking
about preaching practical politics. Preaching devoid of religion.
That would be #3.

I was raised as a "Christian" and although I have transcended any need for
religion I still get pissed when I hear "preachers" who use religion to scare people.
All that hellfire, damnation and bigotry is harmful as hell to children. It's psychologically crippling. (descending theology)

OTOH, I just love listening to a good "call and reply" full gospel black preacher who fills
his congregation with hope and faith. (ascending theology)
My favorite Sunday brunch restaurant was the one next door to the largest black church in town just because we could hear the music while dining.

If Obama starts preaching come to Jebus I'll join you and tell him to STFU,
but if he starts preaching "Green" Industry I'll say amen.
If he starts preaching an orderly exit from Iraq I'll say hallelujah!
If he wants to use "call and reply" on important issues, I'll respond with
letters to Congress.

Imagine a President who uses his "bully pulpit" in a positive way
like a former community organizer / activist might use a bull horn at a rally.
Imagine the standard Presidential Saturday morning radio address becoming
a weekly call to reply on behalf of what we, the American People, really
want from government.

If Obama can "preach" for a non secular, moral, economical, racial, ecological
and constitutional revival in America, I'll help set up the tent.
Will you?

64. When I read the title of your post I immediately thought of
Sen. Clinton! Sometimes she comes across, to me, as a ranting Mother who knows what's best and is VERY vocal about it. She does seem to lose her voice a lot. Offering hope is better than being depressed.

65. Yeah, that's the one *personal* trait of Obama's I can't stand.
My take as a gay person: The only people who preach at me that way are the ones who call LGBTs demon-possessed pedophiles.

My take as a recovering Catholic: The only people who preach at Catholics that way are the ones who call the Pope the Antichrist -- and crap all over Catholics for "woshipping" the Virgin Mary. (I may revile Catholicism, but I'm very protective of Catholics; I grant that perhaps only a fellow Catholic may understand that.)

Obama's preachy style strikes a reflexive chord deep inside me -- and not in a good way.

66. Me, me
Obama often phrases things in terms of orders in his speeches: "Understand this.." I don't like being told what to do. Puts my back up.

67. We've been preached at for the past 7 years and I'm damn sick of it
I certainly don't want another 4 years (or more) of it.

People like to think that LGBTs dislike Obama only because of the McClurkin incident but as a gaytheist I was among a number of people who began to get uncomfortable some time before that, back when Obama's constant pandering to evangelicals and preacher-man style became obvious. The WH and the entire administration has become more or less a forum to cram Christianity down America's throat over the past 8 years and we've had enough. We certainly don't need another president who can't separate his religion from his politics--even if primarily in his style if not his substance.

68. Actually, that was the first thing that bothered me about Obama
Now, it's certainly not the only thing, but it still bothers me. If I want to hear a preacher I'll go to church (and I don't go to church).

As for Hillary's occasional shouting (oh, but she's a woman, so it has to be "screeching"), I haven't seen much of that, but when I have, it was when she was trying to talk over a roaring crowd. Women's voices usually don't carry as well as men's, so we often HAVE to shout to make ourselves heard. I've done it myself, don't like my voice when I do it, but it's sometimes necessary.

69. I'm already tired of the first preacher-in-chief. I don't need another.
