Poll question: Obama VP: Round 1
This list will probably be revised as time goes on and the question re-asked but if you believe, as I do, that Obama will be the candidate who would you like to see him run with?

A few notes on the possibilities:
  • Hillary Clinton: I think this is unlikely, too much bad blood and it's getting worse - also, given her ambition I wouldn't want her 'waiting in the wings' if I were Obama.

  • Al Gore: Again, I think it's unlikely. I think he's enjoying being outside the system and having already been VP for 8 years I doubt he wants to do it again. Still if Obama were to make him the point man on environmental policy, he might reconsider.

  • John Kerry: Also unlikely - who wants to go from Presidential candidate to Vice presidential candidate?

Forget him. He is marginally blue at best.

    43. It will have to be someone old that doesn't see a future beyond 2012
because they won't want to be tasked with carrying the burden of Obama's law suits into the Whitehouse.

Kinda early to have this kind of poll.

    7. Gen. Anthony Zinni's name has been bandied about. I don't know
    where that came from:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Zinni

An effort to get him to run for the U.S. Senate has stalled indefinitely.<3> Zinni has said he will never run for office. He says his decision to endorse President George W. Bush in 2000 was a mistake. He plans to avoid politics in the future.<4> However, on March 3, 2006, Zinni joined fellow former U.S. Marines General Joseph P. Hoar, Lt. General Greg Newbold, Lt. General Frank Petersen, and Congressman Jack Murtha in endorsing fellow former U.S. Marine and Secretary of the Navy Jim Webb for U.S. Senate in Virginia.<5> Zinni has been floated as a possible Vice Presidential running mate for Barack Obama, should Obama win the Democratic nomination.<6>

Ticket needs to take military experience argument away from McCain. The ticket also needs insurance against serious world events or terrorist attacks. Progressive,anti-war "outsider" with management experience should be a good fit.

    23. Some mighty good choices for that job on our side, IMO, to include
those on your list, plus Bill Bradley.

I don't think Bradley should be discounted. He secures the New England and mid-Atlantic states, IMO. He's already endorsed Obama. He's one of the smartest people out there. He played a wicked forward for the Knicks. And he has a welcoming personality with a tough center.

Gov. Richardson would be a great choice because he brings the seasoned sage thing into play, he knows a thing or two about energy from his Cabinet service, he can negotaite like nobody's business, and he is a west-of-the-Mississippi Hispanic champion 2-term governor of a purple state.

I'm praising just these two for now, but we have a long list and rich field of good choices.

    24. Clark!
He balances geographically. He balances age-wise. He has foreign policy experience as well as military experience. He is a progressive and a populist. He would make an excellent "attack dog" so that Obama can focus on the positive. He would smack down any swift boaters and give them hell. He is not a senator, so he would not have to be replaced. He is articulate, intelligent, a good debater, appears earnest and trustworthy. PS he is more liberal than either hillary or obama, yet he is very appealing to independents and cross over reps.

As an endorser of Hillary, his nomination would even be an olive branch to the hillary camp.

    38. Nice try but It probably would hurt him in his Senat race.
People have gotten a pass before for runing for reelection while running for VP but this would not be a senate reelection. He is running for two office for the first time simultaneously... Better if He runs for the Senate.Drops out to run for VP ans Tim Kane picks up the Senate bid.

    28. Yeah, I keep coming back to Webb, despite the arguments against him.
He's tough, he's principled, he would checkmate McCain on the military stuff, he's from a state that would be great to win, he's plain spoken, he's a hell of a partisan after being Naval Secretary under Reagan, he's smart as a whip, and did I mention he's tough?

Negatives: Plain spoken (loose cannon), white male, Reagan ties (could also be a positive), one-term senator.

Still, there is a hell of a lot to like about Webb as VP. Obama could do a lot worse.

    27. Why do people keep mentioning Webb?
He just got there in 2006. That's never going to happen. Wes Clark is highly unlikely too given his strong support of Hillary.

I like the idea of Kathleen Sebelius. A Democratic Govenor of a red, Midwestern state. Good crossover decision. Though some people won't like the idea of a Black Man and Woman being on the same ticket. The only reason people bring it up with regards to Clinton and Obama is because it may be out of neccissity.

Endorsed O a yer ago, can deliver VA in GE!

Great speaker, organizer, if Obama wins, Kaine's Dem Lt Gov then runs as incumbent in 2009!!

VA has 4-year, one term limit for Gov., so Kaine is natural choice among all governors and a true progressive like Obama.

They also know and like each other a lot.

    46. Think "Team of Rivals"
I don't think Obama would hold it against anyone for endorsing Hillary. And Lincoln's one of his heroes. Lincoln made his whole cabinet up of his political foes, so somehow I don't see Obama limiting his choices to people who endorsed him. Clark would be a good fit.

Edited on Mon Feb-18-08 08:39 PM by protect our future
Out of all the dedicated democrats who could serve as VP, John Kerry is the most capable person to lead the country in case of emergency.

He has a world of experience, especially in foreign affairs, and has already been dealing with foreign diplomats and VIPs for many years.

Being an elder statesman adept in foreign relations, he balances out the ticket.

Would he choose to be VP if asked? Probably, since his prime concern is -- and always has been -- whatever is best for our country rather than what is best for John Kerry. But if there is another important capacity he would feel more comfortable serving in, such as SOS, Kerry should have the option of making that choice.

edited to add my feelings about Joe Biden: He's great, but I think there are foreign policy differences between Biden and Obama. I could be incorrect about this.
