The Capital Times — 2/17/2008 7:43 pm

The Hillary Clinton campaign announced that Sunday's rally at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison will be postponed until Monday night.

The "Solutions for America Rally" will take place in the convention center's exhibition hall. The doors will open at 6:30 and the event will start at 8:30. See Clinton's website for more details.

The ice storm that hit Madison in the morning has been followed by flooding and it now being overtaken by snow and buses are canceled and city officials are advising residents to keep off the road -

Derailed by Weather, Clinton Improvises in Wisconsin

By Jose Antonio Vargas
MILWAUKEE -- In campaignspeak, a day like this is called an "OTR." Not off the record, but off the rail, off the schedule, off the plan.

But when freezing rain and slippery roads derail a packed itinerary, you gotta do what you gotta do. Improvise.

Sen. Hillary Clinton was scheduled to speak at three rallies today in the
Badger State, first at St. Norbert College in De Pere, then at University of Wisconsin at Wassau, followed by an event in Madison. But bad weather across the state -- snow is due to fall any minute now -- has forced the campaign to cancel the first event. She's not the only one. Sen. Barack Obama canceled a town hall meeting in Kaukauna.

To replace the De Pere stop, Clinton dropped by Miss Katie's Diner, just a short drive away from her hotel, for a late breakfast, ordering eggs and hash browns. Flanked by Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton and Rep. Tammy Baldwin, and trailed by traveling press corps of about 20, she shook hands, posed for photos and rattled the crowd.

………..

A short drive from Miss Katie's, Clinton stepped out of her black SUV and greeted shoppers and workers at El Rey, a Mexican grocery store in this city's south side. The store owner immediately announced in the store speaker: "Bienvideo, Hillary!" With Lawton by her side, Clinton toured the aisles, passing the cans of green pickled jalapeno peppers on sale for $2.09 a pop and snacking on chips and mole with roasted chicken that were being offered as samples near the produce section.

Though Clinton sent her daughter Chelsea and former president Bill Clinton to campaign for her across the state last week, Clinton just arrived here in Wisconsin yesterday. Her first event was at the Brat Stop, a landmark watering hole in Kenosha, about 30 miles south of Milwaukee and 50 miles north of Chicago. She received a warm, boisterous reception from the packed, shoulder-to-shoulder crowd, some of whom carried signs such as "Wisconsin HEARTS Hillary," "HRC # 1," "Hillary's the One!" and "Welcome, Hillary!" One her supporters yelled out loud: "I just want to say to the naysayers, 'Give 'em hell, Hillary!'"

Chelsea Clinton speaks to students as she campaigns for her mother, Hillary
Confident: Chelsea Clinton speaks to students at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio

………
In a typical appearance last week, she demonstrated a near-encyclopaedic grasp of her mother's policies during a 90-minute question-and-answer session with hundreds of students at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio.…………

Ms Clinton urged her audience to look to the example of a famous female leader from across the Atlantic when asked how the world would deal with a woman in the White House.

"When Margaret Thatcher was the prime minister of the United Kingdom, she was dealt with as the prime minister of the United Kingdom," she said.
………….

And instead of the sort of family snippets that Mitt Romney's children or Mr Obama's wife Michelle have shared with audiences, Ms Clinton instead demonstrated the "policy wonk" tendencies of her parents as she spoke in detail about health care, the economy, Iraq, gay rights, education and foreign affairs.……

But his friend Miranda Miller was convinced. "After this, I'll be voting for Hillary," she said. "Chelsea convinced me."

Clinton campaign opens up shop in South Austin

Former gubernatorial candidate Garry Mauro said he was surprised by the turnout of volunteers, many of whom were fixated on a "how-to-caucus" presentation in the 15,000-square-foot warehouse off Ben White and I-35 that formerly served as Texas campaign headquarters for the Kinky Friedman for Governor campaign of two years ago.
………

For a primer on how the primary/caucus works, look here.

Mauro said Obama has yet to win a big state, and he suggested the Illinois senator's Congress Avenue headquarters was something of an extravagant expense, indicative of the kind of voters Obama appeals to.

“We're Dunkin' Donuts Democrats," he said.

Mauro, who has firsthand knowledge of how difficult it can be for Democrats to win in Texas, said with Hillary at the top of the ticket, the state will once again be competitive in the general election.

Former President Bill Clinton arrived in Austin late Saturday to make the case for his wife to win Texas' crucial Democratic primary/caucus.

Clinton said Hillary was right for Texas and noted that the Lone Star State could decide the nominee.

The former president talked about Hillary's role registering Mexican Americans to vote in the 1972 primary, and he thanked the Austin staff for what he said was a strong effort.

Stephen Schlesinger: Hillary Clinton clearly is best to lead nation

Stephen Schlesinger — 2/17/2008 1:01 pm

In the upcoming Democratic presidential primary, Wisconsin voters are blessed with two candidates who are smart, energetic and forward-looking. Nonetheless, the state's residents have to decide who will be the most qualified starting on the first day in the Oval Office. My choice is Hillary Clinton.

I have had the good fortune to observe Clinton's career while living in New York. Up close, she is an unusually tough and savvy as well as charming political figure. While not as visible as Mayor Rudy Giuliani on 9/11, she showed great mastery in the difficult days after the attacks in helping to bring about the physical and emotional recovery of New York City and gaining federal assistance for ground zero workers exposed to toxic air.

As important, in her eight years in the Senate, she has compiled a strong liberal voting record in the tradition of Wisconsin's great Sens. Bob La Follette and Gaylord Nelson. While she has known defeats (e.g., health care in 1994), she has turned her reversals into legislative prowess on Capitol Hill.

Her work on the Armed Services Committee and her fact-finding visits overseas belie the notion that she has limited foreign policy experience. Her vote for the congressional resolution on Iraq in 2002 was a vote for continued weapons inspection and diplomacy and in opposition to pre-emptive war, as she clearly stated in her Senate floor speech. Today she is trying to prevent the establishment of permanent U.S. bases in Iraq by requiring prior congressional approval for any such outposts.

Of extraordinary importance, she has taken the lead on the most important economic crisis to face our country in decades. She was among the first of the Democratic contenders to propose a bold economic recovery program designed to rescue the nation from recession. Over a month ago, Clinton advocated for $70 billion in emergency spending and a backup of a $40 billion tax rebate should economic conditions worsen. Hers is a direct attempt to help the most threatened people in America -- namely, lower-income families facing foreclosures of their mortgages, those in need of home heating aid, and people who require extended jobless benefits.

Her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, belatedly came out with his own plan, which seemingly lifts most of his ideas straight out of Clinton's proposal.

On a more specific level, Clinton's recommendations on helping Americans caught in the subprime mortgage mess are far-reaching. She has called for a moratorium on foreclosures, a freezing of interest rates, the use of federal subsidies to help homeowners keep up with payments and restructure loans, and augmented regulation of the financial industry.

Obama has come up with an alternative plan, which, by contrast, does none of these things but tinkers around the edges. He backs a bill against mortgage fraud, supports an average $500 tax credit for homeowners, and endorses additional funding for a limited class of homeowners. His is a tepid response to an enormous tragedy.

In many ways, Clinton is to the left of Obama. She has outlined a program of universal health insurance -- meaning that every person in America would be covered. By contrast, his plan is more restrictive and would leave millions of people uncovered.

Lastly, Clinton is a fighter for change. Obama, on the other hand, is a self-described conciliator. What Democrats want today, however, is a battler, not a mediator. They have suffered enough from the vicious blows of President Bush and the Republicans. What the party needs is a nominee who will take the contest directly to the opposition. Come the fall showdown, a candidacy of "friendly persuasion" is going to be Swift-boated into oblivion.

40. I really don't understand this push to forgive the lady her vote for war.
"Her vote for the congressional resolution on Iraq in 2002 was a vote for continued weapons inspection and diplomacy and in opposition to pre-emptive war, as she clearly stated in her Senate floor speech."

I'll take the inspector's word over the journalist's. It was a vote for war.

See Hillary Run (from Her Husband's Past on Iraq)
by Scott Ritter

Senator Hillary Clinton wants to become President Hillary Clinton. "I'm in, and I'm in to win," she said, announcing her plans to run for the Democratic nomination for the 2008 Presidential election. Let there be no doubt that Hillary Clinton is about as slippery a species of politician that exists, one who has demonstrated an ability to morph facts into a nebulous blob which blurs the record and distorts the truth. While she has demonstrated this less than flattering ability on a number of issues, nowhere is it so blatant as when dealing with the issue of the ongoing war in Iraq and Hillary Clinton's vote in favor of this war.

This issue won't be resolved even if Hillary Clinton apologizes for her Iraq vote, as other politicians have done, blaming their decision on faulty intelligence on Iraq's WMD capabilities. This is because, like many other Washington politicians at the time, including those now running for president, she had been witness to lies about Iraq's weapons programs to justify attacks on that country by her husband President Bill Clinton and his administration.

"While there is no perfect approach to this thorny dilemma, and while people of good faith and high intelligence can reach diametrically opposed conclusions, I believe the best course is to go to the UN for a strong resolution that scraps the 1998 restrictions on inspections and calls for complete, unlimited inspections with cooperation expected and demanded from Iraq," Senator Clinton said at the time of her vote, in a carefully crafted speech designed to demonstrate her range of knowledge and ability to consider all options. "I know that the Administration wants more, including an explicit authorization to use force, but we may not be able to secure that now, perhaps even later. But if we get a clear requirement for unfettered inspections, I believe the authority to use force to enforce that mandate is inherent in the original 1991 UN resolution, as President Clinton recognized when he launched Operation Desert Fox in 1998."

Hillary would have done well to leave out that last part, the one where her husband, the former President of the United States, used military force as part of a 72-hour bombing campaign ostensibly deemed as a punitive strike in defense of disarmament, but in actuality proved to be a blatant attempt at regime change which used the hyped-up threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction as an excuse for action. Sound familiar? While many Americans today condemn the Bush administration for misleading them with false claims of unsubstantiated threats which resulted in the ongoing debacle we face today in Iraq (count Hillary among this crowd), few have reflected back on the day when the man from Hope, Arkansas sat in the Oval Office and initiated the policies of economic sanctions-based containment and regime change which President Bush later brought to fruition when he ordered the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Scott Ritter served as a former Marine Corps officer from 1984 until 1991, and as a UN weapons inspector in Iraq from 1991 until 1998. He is the author of several books, including "Iraq Confidential" and "Target Iran". He also co-authored "War on Iraq" with William Pitt.

Doors open for Clinton event in De Pere

The doors of the St. Norbert College Sports Center opened promptly at 8 a.m. today as lines formed early to get a good seat for New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s 9:30 a.m. speech.

Clinton was originally scheduled to speak Sunday but had to postpone the trip because of the winter storm.

Entrance to the sports center is through the northwest door only, according to a spokesman for the Transportation Safety Administration.

New Clinton economic message has echoes of Edwards

MILWAUKEE, Wis., Feb 17 (Reuters) - White House hopeful Hillary Clinton has a message for hairdressers in Wisconsin, postal workers in Ohio and autoworkers across the United States who are struggling financially: She cares.

Clinton is courting working-class voters with a new message of economic populism similar to the theme of John Edwards, the former North Carolina senator who dropped out of the Democratic race in January.

At campaign rallies over the last few days, Clinton has vowed to rein in corporate interests from oil companies to credit card issuers and mortgage lenders, contending that they are profiting at the expense of the middle class.

"Some days, it probably feels like the perfect storm. You fill up your tank, and that's two twenties from your wallet. You pick up a gallon of milk and a few other things -- and there goes another," Clinton told workers on Thursday at a General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio.

"After a while, you feel like a human ATM -- with all the money going the wrong way."

"It's a little bit hard to take the fact that we have investment managers on Wall Street making $50 million a year paying a lower percentage of their income than nurses and teachers and truck drivers," Clinton said to loud applause at a jam-packed bratwurst restaurant in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

She railed against a tax code that she said was unfair to the middle class and against the outsourcing of jobs overseas.

"We're going to keep jobs by making it abundantly clear that there will not be one penny of your tax dollars that goes to anyone who exports jobs out of Wisconsin," Clinton said . . .

Clinton laid groundwork in this area decades ago (San Antonio, TX)-

Express-News

In 1972, Hillary Clinton left Texas in far better shape than did Sen. George McGovern.

He got trounced in the Lone Star state in his campaign against President Nixon. But Clinton — then Hillary Rodham, a Yale law student — came away with ties to Hispanic voters that she now sees as crucial to her campaign for Texas' March 4 presidential primary.

She registered voters here and in the Rio Grande Valley, putting her on the doorsteps of numerous Latinos and in touch with local politicos and union organizers, for McGovern's campaign. Bill Clinton, her then-boyfriend, was organizing the state for McGovern.

When the registration period ended, she helped guide the San Antonio campaign in the last few weeks before the election.

Sen. Clinton, state Rep. José Menéndez and state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte — both San Antonio Democrats — hammered home that experience during her rally Wednesday night in St. Mary's University's sports arena. …..

"We used to say there's not a belly laugh in her," said Peters, a McGovern volunteer who worked for the AFL-CIO's political education arm in San Antonio. "Hillary was very, very serious. She studied the issues deeply, and she really did care about improving people's lives."

Press Release: Hillary on Beef Recall (2/17)

http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/release/view/?id=6044

2/17/2008
Statement from Hillary Clinton

"The news today of the largest beef recall in our nation’s history is yet another troubling reminder that we have done too little to protect our food supply. This incident also reveals a danger to our children, since the Hallmark company is the second largest supplier to the U.S. School Lunch program. I believe that American families should not have to worry about the safety of the food on their dinner tables or in their children's school lunches. That is why I have long been calling for common-sense - and long-overdue - food safety reforms, building on my work in the Senate. As President, I will fully fund our food safety system so that our inspectors have the resources and manpower they need to do their jobs. I will create a single food safety agency to replace the patchwork of regulation we have now. I will implement an effective recall system so that potentially tainted food immediately comes off grocery store shelves and families receive instant notification. I will strictly enforce safety rules and impose stiff criminal and civil penalties on violators. And I will crack down on the slaughter of sick or injured cows, a practice which poses health risks to families and children. Now more than ever, America needs a President who will deliver concrete reforms that fill the gaps in our food safety system."

Must Read: Newspaper Cited in Obama's OHIO NAFTA Mailer Calls it “Misleading”

From Newsday:

"Obama's use of the citation in this way does strike us as misleading...It's an example of the kind of slim reeds campaigns use to try to win an office."

To see Senator Obama’s "misleading" mailer: http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0208/The_boon_quote.html

Below is the full text of today's Newsday story:

NAFTA: Us, Hillary and the "Boon"

The Democratic campaign has moved in earnest to Ohio, where times are tough and NAFTA has become a dirty word. In an effort to score points, Barack Obama has been dropping a mail-piece (left) that repeats a charge he has made several other times during the campaign -- that "Hillary Clinton believed NAFTA was 'a boon' to the economy."

This attack has attracted a flurry of attention, from Clinton's campaign and some reporters. As it turns out, the primary source is us. Back in Sept. 2006, an abbreviated chart printed on Newsday's Spin Cycle page compared Hillary with her Democratic US Senate primary challenger Jonathan Tasini on a variety of issues. The issues chart included this:

She is invigorating to the crowd, telling them exactly what ideas she has for bringing new jobs there, exactly how.

She is positive, uplifting and gives you a feeling that she will GET IT DONE, that she understands what we need, and she cares.

She isn't telling people that their jobs aren't coming back, like McCain. She's telling people the new jobs she will bring.

And I believe her.

Obama does not speak like this.

I'd rather have real answers, and I prefer her down to earth, personal way of speaking with people rather than a lofty speech anyday.
