Oldest Hispanic Group within the Texas Democratic Party Endorses Barack Obama
Mexican American Democrats Endorse Obama

Oldest Hispanic Group within the Texas Democratic Party Makes Endorsement Following Meeting in Dallas

AUSTIN – Yesterday, the Mexican American Democrats endorsed Senator Barack Obama in his campaign for president, citing his longstanding relationship with Hispanic community and commitment to improving the lives of Hispanic men, women and children in Texas and across America.

The Mexican American Democrats believe that Senator Obama’s experience bringing Americans of all ages, religions, races and ethnicities together make him the best candidate to make progress on the issues that matter to Hispanics in Texas and across America. Obama’s leadership in the U.S. Senate on comprehensive immigration reform and his specific plans to strengthen our schools, bring about universal healthcare, and provide tax relief for working families show us that he is truly committed to improving the lives of Hispanics and all Americans.

In the face of a tight primary race in Texas, the Hispanic community’s participation at the polls will be crucial in deciding who will be the nominees of the Democratic Party. The mission of the Mexican American Democrats is to unify and empower the Mexican American-Latino community by increasing voting numbers to achieve political influence on issues that affect the Hispanic Community, as well as promote Hispanics as political candidates and appointees.

On Saturday February 16, the Mexican American Democrats’ endorsement committee met in Dallas to screen Democratic candidates running for office. Candidate response and participation was overwhelming. The committee heard from candidates on issues of importance to Mexican American Democrats in writing, as well as in person via conference call.

“The Mexican American community needs more that just Spanish speaking candidates trying to get the Hispanic vote. We need candidates who are committed to improve the lives of Latino men, women and children whether citizens, legal residents or undocumented by writing polices that work for us,” said John Lopez chairman of the endorsing committee. The Mexican American Democrats challenged the candidates to outline their position on issues like immigration, access to justice, education and many other topics of pressing concern.

At the Presidential level, the Mexican American Democrats hereby announce their overwhelming support for Senator Barack Obama. Senator Obama stated “My commitment to a humane and sensible immigration system is unparalleled…we want to bring the undocumented out of hiding and put them on a path of earned citizenship.” This position and his commitment to issues that matter to the Hispanic community won Senator Obama the endorsement of the Mexican American Democrats in Texas.

The Texas Senate race endorsement was won by Rick Noriega, as his experience and qualifications overwhelmingly overshadowed those of his opponents. “When we think about electing a Senator who will make decisions about the war in Iraq, we want someone who knows what it is to serve in the military,” said Steve Salazar, Chairman of the Mexican American Democrats.

Other candidates endorsed were Jim Jordan for Texas Supreme Court whose position on access to justice address issues of concern about the Hispanic population. For Texas Supreme Court Place 7, the Mexican America Democrats endorsed Sam Houston and for Texas Supreme Court Place 8 they endorsed Linda Reyna Yanez. The endorsement for the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Place 4 went to JR Molina.

Finally, we endorsed Art Hall was for Rail Road Commissioner, as the committee felt he understand Hispanic issues because he taught international law in Ecuador, speaks Spanish, and has a background in finance.

The Mexican American Democrats will work hard across the state to form coalitions with other groups who support same candidates and to bring out the Hispanic vote. The Mexican American Democrats will hold a series of events including their state convention and delegate training on March 1, 2008, just in time to energize our constituents vote for the candidates we have endorsed. The Mexican American Democrats are the oldest Hispanic political organization in the state of Texas.

Mods? This is a press release, so I hope I'm not out of line in posting the entire thing.

y Viva Obama!

Ya, por fin, vamos a tener un Presidente con caracter, buen juicio, inteligencia, y un control total de los detalles de la politica, quien ademas de tener politicas mejores, tiene el poder para unir a toda clase de gente!

For those who don't know - "Vamonos" means "let's go" in Spanish - so "Obamanos" is a pretty killer little refrain - please FEEL FREE use it liberally in your posts!!

This endorsement is "noticias bien padre!" - ("pretty cool news!")

73. Unless someone "recounts" them
Some strange things going on in New York. Maybe someone should "recount" in California as well. The Hispanics in California might not count either. After a recount.

Forewarned is forearmed. Hillary Clinton intends to get the nomination by hook or by crook. Emphasis on the latter if need be.

The Mexican American Democrats challenged the candidates to outline their position on issues like immigration, access to justice, education and many other topics of pressing concern.

That's the core of the message. When Tom DeLay and his goons redistricted Texas, they went after the WD40s - White Democrat Congressmen over 40 in order to divide the Latino community. They purposefully put Congressman Lloyd Doggett in a "fajita" district that ran over 350 miles from S/W Austin the the Valley. They did it to pit him against a Latina/Latino from the Valley. It didn't work. Lloyd won the district anyway with massive support in the Valley. My Mom loved her Congressman Doggett because it didn't matter that he was white, he knew how to work and represent his constituency. She's lost Lloyd to another round of redistricting after the SCOTUS rulling that said that the TX GOP gerrymandered TX-23 for Rebpublican Henry Bonilla, but we kept him in the family. He represents me again in Austin.

The point I'm making is that the Latino population is loyal, but not monolithic. There will be Hispanics that support Clinton and there will be Hispanics that support Obama. The candidate that wins will have to keep the voters engaged and deliver on their campaign promises.

Obama has my vote. Obamanos Tejas!

Sonia

46. As I've been posting here for the past week, Hispanics will not carry the day for Clinton in Texas
Unless one is here in Texas and tuned into the many political happenings, one cannot know that most of the media meme about Hillary and Hispanics in Texas is simply more campaign wishful thinking.

She may win the Latino vote barely, but it won't be much if she does, and it won't be enough to carry her. The delegate allocations favor black senatorial districts, not Hispanic ones.

48. United Farm Workers Union for Hillary..
This is from January:

Today in Salinas, California, at an event with more than 1,000 people the United Farm Workers gave its enthusiastic endorsement to Senator Hillary Clinton for President. The UFW represents more than 27,000 farm workers.

"After meeting with and talking to the candidates, the UFW board believes Hillary Clinton to be the strongest, most experienced candidate for President of the United States. She will be able to tackle our nation's toughest problems – health care, improving the economy for working people and repairing our country's standing in the world. Senator Clinton has stood with farm workers and immigrants - fighting for comprehensive immigration reform, sponsoring the UFW sponsored AgJOBS and helping 1,800 farm workers sign a union contract with D'Arrigo after 30 years," said UFW President Arturo Rodriguez

The UFW, founded in 1962 by Cesar E. Chavez and Dolores Huerta, and often described as the conscience of the labor movement for its inspiring fights for low wage working families, is the first successful and most influential farm labor union in the United States. Throughout its 40 year history, the UFW has worked to organize farm workers, raise wages and improve working conditions for its members and all farm workers.

60. The Ballad of Hillary Clinton - her campaign in Texas for the Latino vote
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 08:54 AM by TexasObserver
The Ballad of Hillary Clinton

Way out in the west
Where the folks are the best,
But the towns are really remote.
Rides our gun-totin’ pal
That Hillary gal,
And she’s courtin’ the Hispanic vote.

Yup, she’s packin’ a gun
And it ain’t just for fun.
They say she’s shot seven or eight.
She’s angry and mean,
The worst that we’ve seen
When she’s roundin’ up each delegate.

“Howdy, you all!”
She says with a drawl.
“I’m looking for Spaniards, you see.
Now ya do what I says,
I’m runnin’ for prez,
So just hand them over to me!”

From the back comes a shout
“I’m afraid that they’re out
At a rally just down the street.
‘Cause a new guy’s come in
And they’re voting for him,
He’s the one they all want to meet!”

She gallops away,
In tears, so they say.
Amid shouts of “Obama’s our man!”
With voices so loud,
A people so proud…
“Yes, we can! Yes, we can! Yes, we can!!

by Richard Fassler, who has published it in a number of Texas blogs for use by all
(not me, don't know him)

Mark it. Obama hasn't even campaigned in ernest down there and has already caught up with her. There just aren't enough post-menopausal white women in Texas to carry the state for her. That's the only voting block that's sticking with her at this point.

I am Hillary's age. Grew up and went to school with women like her who I found to be opportunistic. That doesn't mean she hasn't done good things but I think she regards these good things as feathers in her cap. I don't believe her motives. Sorry HRC supporters but that's how I feel.

66. So's my Mom - and she's an Unaffilated voter as well.
While HRC was wasting her time burning bras, my mom was working her way through school and starting her first business. My mom, wife, and sister are all self-made, strong, female business-owners, all unaffiliated, and not a one of them can stand HRC.

70. Thank you! I have my own business too...well did...we've relocated
to Texas so I'm getting "arranged". I was going to continue with my reply above and also say that women voting for Sen. Clinton just because she's a woman is a mistake, in my book. I believe with all our problems in the Middle East and the view of women in that area now is not the time for a woman....sad but true....any woman, not just Sen. Clinton.

65. They must not have gotten the Memo ~

:bounce:

The Memo from Billary that Hispanics are solidly in their corner.....

I'm from Los Angeles and I will never believe that there was an overwhelming love for the Clinton's that could not be moved.

I never saw any long lines in the Hispanic areas the day of our election. No lines waiting to vote for Billary.

YES we ALL Can Vote For the Candidate that wants to include everyone in their tent.

71. Since Hillary's campaign has proven itself to be incompetent...
perhaps they just forgot to call the Mexican American Democrats to ask for their endorsement. After all, this was supposed to be over on Super Tuesday.
