MN: Obama kills McPain while Hillary trails; FL: both dems trail, Obama by larger margin

MN: McPain 47, Clinton 42, but Obama 53, McPain 38 (Obama does 20 points better than Hillary).
FL: McPain 49, Hillary 43, and McPain 53, Obama 37 (Hillary does 10 points better than Obama).

Bottom line (according to this and countless other polls), Obama is doing very well in most swing states and poorly in some important ones (OH and mainly FL). Hillary is doing poorly everywhere, even in blue states (WA, OR).

MN is possibly the safest blue state in the nation. Since 1960, it has only gone to the GOP once (Nixon in 1972).

You could probably run Charlie Manson here, and as long as he's got DFL behind his name, he'll win.

MN is far from safe blue. And if it is the safest blue state, it is all the more troubling that Hillary is trailing against McPain there.

She lost 2:1 in the caucuses. However, if she is the nominee, she would probably still win. The only change the GOP has in MN is if Gov Pawlenty is chosen as McCain's running mate. And even though he's on McCain's short list, it's still an outside chance.

I think that it is more probable than not that MN will go blue regardless of who the Dem candidate is, but the notion that any candidate with a DFL endorsement will prevail probably hasn't been true for 20 years (which was the last time we elected a Democratic governor).

2004 had a big turnout, and even 2006's was good, but 2008's set records, while the GOP's numbers were not much better than average, at best. And, given the fact that the unpopular Norm Coleman is running for re-election, and most people think the country is going in the wrong direction, it's the DFL's fight to lose this year.

Republicans tend to do better here in non-presidential election years, while the Dems tend to do better in presidential election years.

I think we're in good shape, but it's still nine months away. The tidal wave of new activists in 2004 has really made the difference.

DFL Chair Brian Melendez (Dean) and Assoc. Chair Donna Cassutt (Kucinich) have really done an incredible job turning the party around these past four years. 2006 was really good, and hopefully 2008 will be even better. :thumbsup:
